WTO to hear EU banana protest

THE World Trade Organisation (WTO) will meet in an emergency session today (Monday) as Europe presses for condemnation of US sanctions in the banana dispute.

The WTO cannot instruct the USA to end the sanctions, but Europe hopes that its condemnation will force a climbdown.

The USA is aggrieved that Europe favours Caribbean bananas over Latin American ones distributed by American companies.

Caribbean countries are threatening to renege on a treaty with the USA to fight drug trafficking in retaliation for Washingtons stance, reports the Financial Times.
