You can make money out of beef — MLC

FARMERS can make money out of beef, despite suffering the lowest market prices for 20 years, industry experts claimed today (Tuesday).

Farmers who meet the demands of the market, improve productivity and reduce costs can look forward to a profitable future, said experts from the Meat and Livestock Commission (MLC).

The claim was made in London at the launch of the MLCs guide Making money out of beef – A strategy for survival.

“The whole industry is currently experiencing great difficulties and this practical MLC guide sets out a number of strategies which can help farmers survive.”

The report, which urges beef farmers to “get back to basics”, won the support of farm minister Nick Brown who attended the launch.

“Producers are under constant pressure and some are losing money,” said Mr Brown. “The clear-cut advice in this publication is very timely for the industry.”

An estimated 80,000 summaries of the report will be sent to beef producers across the country.
