Young stockman supreme from Wales
ANTHONY Gibbon of Carmarthen is the NFYFC national stockman of the year. He won the title at the European Dairy Farming Event after submitting a written stock management project on which he was interviewed, answering questions on animal health and selecting four breeding cattle, four breeding ewes, four breeding gilts and four dams for breeding dairy herd replacements.
In second place was Philip Harris of Devon and Helen Eustice of Cornwall was third.
The young stock judge of the year competition was won by Rachel Knight of Leicestershire. Sioned Roberts of Carmarthen was second and Lee Graham of Cumbria was third. Finalists were required to judge four rings of stock – dairy cows, beef breeding females, commercial breeding ewes and breeding gilts – and complete a multi-choice animal health and husbandry questionnaire.
Results of the dairy stockjudging competition were: Juniors – 1 Thomas Cleave, Devon; 2 Nia Evans, Pembrokes; 3 Sally Ann Southwell, E Yorks. Intermediate – 1 Helen Bellerby, Yorks; 2 Ian Collins, Yorks; 3 Philip Williams, Gwent. Senior – 1 Arwel Howells, Carmarthen; 2 Angela Booth, Yorks; 3 Richard Graham, Cumbria.
Teams 1 Yorks C (Angela Booth, Helen Bellerby, Richard Willis); 2 Yorks A (Edward Booth, Ian Collins, Claire Booth); 3 Devon B (John Rogers, Claire Horton, Thomas Cleave).
Midland Agriculture sponsored the young stockjudge of the year contest which was won by Rachel Knight (left) and the Royal Association of British Dairy Farmers sponsored the dairy stockjudging in which Helen Bellerby won the intermediate class.
