Zeneca profits climb 7%

ZENECA, the pharmaceuticals and agrochemicals group, yesterday announced that its full-year pre-tax profits were up 7% to £1.08bn on sales down 3% to £5.29bn.

Profits from the groups agrochemicals division rose 19% to £223m.

The company vowed to remain independent following the collapse of merger talks between Glaxo Wellcome and SmithKline Beecham.

The Questor Column in The Daily Telegraph says the companys smaller agrochemicals and speciality chemicals arms put in a reasonable performance

However, the group suffered from lower insecticide sales because there were fewer swarms of bugs in Asia and America last year, it said.
