Bernard Matthews launches green energy initiative

Bernard Matthews, the UK’s largest turkey farmer, has launched ‘The Big Green Plan’ – a programme of green energy initiatives focused on improving the company’s sustainability.

The company said it had six major goals:

  • To be 100% self-sufficient from renewable green electricity by the end of 2016
  • To be 100% carbon neutral by 2020
  • Send zero waste to landfill by 2020
  • Reduce carbon emissions by 35% by 2020
  • Reduced the weight of packaging by 25% by 2020
  • Reduce water usage by 20% by 2020

To achieve this, Bernard Matthews has rolled out a number of green energy projects across its business, including installing 209 biomass boilers on 30 of its turkey farms.

The turkey producer is installing nine large-scale wind turbines at three farms across Norfolk and Suffolk, and has already built a 55-acre solar farm in Suffolk.

It also uses anaerobic digestion to generate power from factory waste, and was investigating using pelleted turkey litter as a fuel for biomass boilers.

“Our Big Green Plan is ambitious and will require everyone in the business to work together to achieve these tough targets,” said chief executive Rob Burnett.

“But for the business to remain sustainable in the future we need to ensure we become more efficient in the way we use energy.”

To date, Bernard Matthews has gained more than £100m of investment from multiple green energy investors to back these initiatives.
