DEFRA minister to address poultry conference

DEFRA minister Jane Kennedy is to address this year’s Egg and Poultry Industry Conference (EPIC) in November.

She is among a host of key speakers at the event, which this year has the theme of “Growing in a challenging environment”.

As the chairman of the organising committee, John Cessford, explained: “Companies operating in agri-business have no rich benefactor to bail them out, as some of the major banks have in recent times. So growing in a challenging environment is going to have to come from within.

“The poultry industry is no stranger to challenging trading environments. Through the major recessions of the 1970s, ’80s and ’90s the poultry industry continued to adapt and change in respect to the huge challenges the market threw at it.”

History has shown that successful poultry farmers and businesses are those that embrace the changing business and economic environment and adapt to meet the new realities of the market place.

To reflect the challenging times, the organising committee has decided to hold prices at last year’s levels of £175 for those over 30 and £95 for those under this age. These discounted rates apply to bookings made before 12 October, after which the price rises to £197 and £105, respectively.

Speakers confirmed to date include this year’s president David Joll of Assured Food Standards, conference chairman James Hook of PD Hook and Teresa Wickam. Peter Thornton of Noble Foods, Richard Maxfield of Cargill Meats Europe and economist Sean Rickard have also confirmed.

The Sunday night White Meat Supper will also run for a third year and, as last year, companies can book whole tables on a first-come, first-served basis.

The conference is being held at the Forest of Arden Hotel, Warwickshire, on 8 and 9 November. For more details or to book your place at the White Meat Supper, contact Peter Sharman on 01400 273 889.
