Consumers should eat at least one egg a day for optimum health benefits, according to a new research report.

The study, to be published in the June issue of the journal Nutrition & Food Science, says that eggs should be considered a “superfood” because of their ability to boost health and even help tackle obesity.

Report author Dr Carrie Ruxton, a dietician and registered public health nutritionist, said that eggs were one of the most nutrient-dense foods available. Eggs could help to play an important role in weight management and dieting, she said.

The findings follow the recent lifting of long-standing limits on recommended egg consumption, previously imposed due to their cholesterol content.

The report identified specific groups which could particularly benefit from raising their consumption. These included children, teenagers and older adults, as well as people whose diets contained a high level of meat, and those who did not drink milk.

“Eggs are not only low in calories but are packed with nutrients that are essential to healthy living,” said Dr Ruxton. “They are an ideal food at every stage of life, as well as being easy to cook and enjoyable to eat.”

Andrew Parker, Chairman of the British Egg Industry Council, added: “The UK egg industry has been working hard for decades to establish eggs as a healthy and economical fast food.

“This study takes last year’s good news about cholesterol a step further, by saying that far from worrying about the number of eggs we eat, most people would actually benefit from increasing their consumption.”
