India: 700,000 birds die after protest goes awry

Around 700,000 chickens on a poultry farm India have died after a protest went badly wrong.

Hundreds of residents were taking part in a sit-in protest against the pollution and smell being emitted from a Radha Sakku Agrio Pharma-owned poultry unit in Karlam, Andhra Pradesh, when a mob forced their way into the facility and cut off the farm’s power supply.

The birds, which were being kept in air conditioned halls, died from asphyxiation.

Police used force to disperse the mob and the deputy general manager of the site was injured in the attack, Gulf News reported.

The company owners have estimated losses of up to INR210m (£2.4m).
