John Retson, of JSR Services, has been presented with the Poultry Club of Scotland’s Howie Surgenor cup, in recognition of a “phenomenal” contribution to the country’s industry.
Poultry vet Eduardo Loedel-Soca, past chairman and committee member, presented the award at the club’s annual dinner in Dunblane.
He said Mr Retson embodied a vocation for “learning, hard work and a fearless approach to enterprise”.
Mr Retson first worked with poultry when agriculture manager of a mixed estate that included a 100,000-hen laying unit with its own pullet rearing facility.
After 17 years, keen to set up his own business, he took on the rent of a broiler shed near Blairgowrie, Perth and Kinross, while also working as a fieldsman for Ross Poultry.
Following this, he set up JSR Services in partnership with his wife Linda in 1990 before expanding into free-range egg production in 2003. He has also served as chairman of the British Free Range Egg Producers.
Mr Retson told the dinner that his career so far had been a “tremendous adventure”, and thanked his family and staff for their support.
