POULTRY PEOPLE: New chairman for British Goose Producers

The British Goose Producers (BGP) has announced the appointment of a new chairman, John Franklin, who runs a mixed farm in Bedfordshire.

He rears around 600 geese for the retail market, mainly for Christmas, and also keeps a flock of 40 laying geese producing eggs for farmers’ markets and shops.

His 150-acre Trumpetons Farm at Thorncote, near Sandy, comprises 70 acres of cereals and 80 acres of grass shared by 100 breeding ewes, 30 head of cattle, 90 pigs and free-range poultry – 100 ducks, 300 hens, 1,600 chickens and 1,250 turkeys, as well as his geese.

Mr Franklin has been BGP vice-chairman for the past three years and a council member since 2003. He said that goose production was an excellent way to get into farming. “The cost of set up is relatively low and you can start small and expand relatively quickly. The most important thing is to establish your market first and get plenty of advice.”

Mr Franklin added that he was “at the end of the telephone” (01767 627 644) for new members, and happy to provide advice and guidance. He also recommended attending the BGP annual producers’ farm walk in the autumn, where a member showcases their business and ideas are swapped about everything from rearing, to slaughter and marketing.
