Fields are very wet in East Yorkshire, but contractor Keith Snowball is on combining today for the first time this week, after being rained off on Sunday (24 August).

“It’s a beautiful sunny afternoon and the wind’s blowing, but when I look at the moisture meter it is 23%, where it’s been all day,” he said. “It is very wet and crops have suffered a bit.”

Mr Snowball reckoned he was about 45% through harvest, with a lot of wheat still to cut.

The 26ha (64 acres) of Solstice second wheat cut at his own High Farm, Brandsby, York, had yielded above average at over 8.6tha (3.5t/acre).

Sample results put the Hagberg at 175-220, with protein contents at 11.5-12.5%.

Dalguise winter oats had also yielded well at over 8.2t/ha (3.3t/acre). “Bushelweights are good but there’s quite a high percentage of screenings,” he said.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
