Winter wheat yields up 10%, spring barley nearly 18% ahead

Winter wheat yields are 10% higher and spring barley nearly 18% above five-year averages, with both over 1t/ha above these long-term means in AHDB Recommended List trials.

Average wheat yields from selected control varieties were 11.37t/ha compared with a five-year mean of 10.34t/ha from 23 trial sites, with only results from six sites in Scotland due to be reported.

Looking at five-year average yields to give a more reliable gauge of performance, three feed wheat varieties – Reflection, Evolution and Santiago – came out top at 105%, while of the breadmakers, Group 2 variety Lili was the top yielder at 104% with Group 1 Skyfall at 101%.

Average yields of control spring barley varieties stands at 8.84 t/ha,1.32 t/ha above the five-year average of 7.52 t/ha from 11 trials, including the first results from Scotland.

From five-year average yields, Planet (107%) is the highest yielder, while Irina (106%) and Olympus (105%) performed well.
