AgriLIVE may be gone, but the spirit of Smithfield lives on

| 4 Comments | No TrackBacks
Just a week ago the winter primestock show scene was rocked by the cancellation of AgriLIVE Smithfield, which had been due to host the Royal Smithfield Club's primestock classes.

And now, just a week later, a temporary home for the championships has been found at November's East of England Winter Stock Festival, Peterborough.

The arrangement will see the Club's championships competed for at the East of England Winter Stock Festival on 12 and 13 November, including the overall cattle and suckled calf championships and the sheep championships.

Explaining the development interim chief executive at East of England Agricultural Society Catherine Pusey said the Society contacted the Royal Smithfield Club after hearing of AgriLIVE's demise.

Speaking on behalf of the Royal Smithfield Club chairman John Campbell said that at an initial meeting last Friday it became clear it would be possible to hold the Club's championships at the event. "This is an arrangement for 2010 which will give all those exhibitors who were planning to attend the show at Stoneleigh an opportunity to compete for the Club's trophies. We are grateful to the generous offer of assistance from the East of England team and look forward to working closely with them to ensure anyone wanting to exhibit can do so."

Entry forms for the East of England Winter Stock Festival are being sent to all those who exhibited at RSC events in recent years and the entry deadline has been extended until Friday 8 October to assist those concerned.

UPDATE: Judges for the classes at Peterborough have been confirmed today (29 September) and they are to stay as they were originally planned to be for the East of England Winter Stock Festival, with Andrew Bishop placing the lambs and Liz Vance placing the cattle.

So, it seems something is set to rise from the ashes of AgriLIVE Smithfield and rather more quickly than some may have expected. Anyone with any desire to see Smithfield survive in future years should support the efforts of the RSC to find a home for the championships this year and where possible get your stock entered. See you there......

AgriLIVE Smithfield cancelled for 2010

| 22 Comments | No TrackBacks

The headline says it all for this story I'm afraid, once again Smithfield faces an uncertain future after a show board meeting yesterday decided to cancel this year's event due to lack of trade stand and sponsorship support.

According to Alice Bell of RASE it has been impossible to find sufficient financial support within the sector to run the event successfully and the decision has been made to cancel this year's show, with the long-term outlook seemingly bleak too.

Looking ahead Miss Bell said RASE and the Royal Smithfield Club intended to continue working together to find a suitable event for the future. "However, while we will look to work together in future, there is no plan for an event in the same format in future years. What is clear to us is that this model is sustainable for the event.

"We either have to find a way of generating a higher income from the event or cut costs, neither of which will be easy without irrevocably changing the nature of the event."

But she defended RASE's role in the situation and said any suggestions that RASE had now killed Smithfield after killing the Royal Show were unfounded. "The two are completely different events and had different challenges. The principle behind AgriLIVE is still strong, whereas the issues behind the Royal were far greater."

Royal Smithfield Club chairman John Campbell said the club was disappointed to be making this decision. "The reality is that running a high quality event including large livestock classes is costly. We had hoped this format would be able to support these costs, but unfortunately this has not been the case."

Of course there will be the usual mudslinging about where the blame lies and I don't think anyone is in any doubt about which of the two organisations bore responsibility for selling trade space and securing sponsorship.

Bu the bigger question is where do we go from here?

One week left for AgriLIVE Smithfield entries

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

December and the depths of winter may seem a long way off as we sit here in September, but as the headline says there is just one week left from today to get entries in for AgriLIVE Smithfield at Stoneleigh.

This year entries may be made either in the traditional paper form or via the event's website.

With Archie MacGregor judging the cattle and John Hall taking charge in the sheep rings the show has two emminent judges more than capable of the task ahead of them, so it should be a great show for anyone planning to take stock.

With strong calf sales seen at a number of marts already this autumn I've no doubt there will be some top notch cattle on show and I suspect the sheep won't disappoint either.

With Mule ewe lamb sales now in full swing it seems buyers have been opening their wallets with some gusto.

With reported shortages of breeding females across the country it is no surprise to see all centres recording averages up on previous years, however, prices of £500 and £460 for Mule ewe lambs are starting to stretch the bounds of credibility just a bit aren't they?

Caledonian Calf sale hits £5000 top call

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks
Cumbrian-based show cattle exhibitor Neil Slack led the buyers at the Caledonian Marts' premier calf show and sale at Stirling on Friday night.

His £5000 bid was greeted with a round of applause and brought life to a sale that had up to that point lacked its usual sparkle.  Mr Slack, of Appleby, acquired Golden Promise, a five-month-old 280kg Charolais cross heifer, by Carradale Ardrenalin and out of a Limousin cross cow.IMG_4981 - semple 5000.jpgShe was consigned by Duncan Semple, of Dippen, Carradale, Argyll, and had on her only previous outing stood champion at Kintyre show.

Mr Semple's previous best trade was £4000 in 1995. Golden Promise's dam had up to Friday bred to £1200 for Mr Semple, who has 100 sucklers and a small pedigree Charolais operation that bears the Carradale prefix.

Mr Slack was determined to get the beast and faced opposition on the telephone from Andrew Bishop, of Eldersfield, Gloucestershire. He expects to take Golden Promise back out at AgriLIVE Smithfield and the Royal Highland Winter Fair.

He said: "She just caught my eye. If she doesn't go on to win anything else she will make a great cow."

The autumn-born champion, a nine-month-old 415kg Charolais cross heifer, from David Henderson, of Auchenrivoch, Kilsyth, Glasgow, was the first of two to sell at £3200.IMG_4916 -henderson 3200.jpgThis daughter of Glenlivet Rambler was out of a three-quarter Limousin cow and was on her first outing. Acquiring her was veteran showman Ewen MacPherson, of Mill Farmhouse, Barcaldine, Oban.
