Shearer tackles 2,142 sheep in 50 hours

A Scottish shearer has clipped more than 2,100 sheep in a 50-hour endurance challenge to raise money for charity.

Grant Hurcomb sheared 2,142 sheep at High Balyett farm, Stranraer, to raise funds for Cancer Research UK and MND Scotland.

Averaging more than 50 sheep per hour, he started at 7pm on Thursday 6 July, and finished at 9pm on Saturday 8 July.

Rowan Main, Cancer Research UK local area manager for Dumfries and Galloway, said: “Grant is a remarkable young man.

“To have sheared more than 2,000 sheep and set a new world record while raising money for Cancer Research UK is fabulous.”

Ms Main said the money raised would help Cancer Research UK find better and kinder treatments for cancer.

“Grant had a huge support team and getting more than 2,000 sheep to the farm where the shearing challenge took place was an incredible logistical feat,” she said.

“I know Grant also appreciated round-the-clock support from those cheering him on while the challenge took place.

“Our heartfelt thanks goes to Grant, his friends, family and supporters.”
