Half a million shipped out by Farmers Ferry

FARMERS Ferry expects to have shipped 500,000 sheep abroad in the last five months of this year, according to company secretary David Owen.

Such farmer-backed initiatives must be allowed to succeed if the retailers stranglehold on the market is to be broken, he said at a Farmer Forum at the show.

"With the creation of strong brand names and the exclusion of competition, the supermarkets control both the supply and demand side of the retail equation to the sole benefit of their shareholders and the detriment of producers," he said.
