MP’s anger at research budget cut

A LABOUR MP has attacked the government for slashing research funding into agriculture.

Nigel Beard, a member of the Commons science and technology committee, said the government had “gone to sleep on the job”.

He claimed the cuts could allow a new crisis similar to BSE to develop.

The research budget for the ministry of agriculture is 135 million — down from 178m in 1990.

Mr Beard said the cuts had already caused the cancellation of projects examining new strains of bacteria resistant to disease which have been created by feeding antibiotics to livestock.
