OILSEED rape growers could be drilling too much seed too close, according to breeder trials.
In trials carried out by Nickerson best results came from a rate of 5kg/ha in 24cm rows, effectively doubling the normal drilling width, says oilseed specialist Jo Bowman.
"A few years ago we all drilled rape at 6-7kg/ha, but I now question whether this is right for many mainstream crops." *
Seed rate should be adjusted to date, he adds, 4.5-5kg/ha giving the best yield from good seed-beds drilled in the third and fourth weeks of August.
