Plethora of GM products gear up for US launch

The US will soon offer genetically-modified (GM) strawberries with enhanced sweetness and mini-melons without seeds to shoppers.

They are among 35 new biotechnology products in development. Others include, peppers, peas and tomatoes that have been made sweeter.

DNAP Holdings, a Mexican-owned company with links to Monsanto, plans to use transgenic technology to develop “convenience fruits” such as the seedless melon, to be “specially bred for its convenient single-serving size and flavour”.
