Scientists develop weevil-resistant GM peas

SCIENTISTS at CSIRO, the Australian research institute, have developed a breed of genetically modified (GM) peas almost totally resistant to weevils.

Now researchers intend to apply the same process to similar crops such as chickpeas and mungbeans.

Weevils are a particular threat for subsistence farmers throughout Asia, the Indian subcontinent, Africa and South America, who often need to store crops in poor conditions.
