Scottish milk producers head for the exit

SCOTTISH milk producers are on the march out of the industry, the Ayr area executive of the National Farmers Union of Scotland was told.

Ian Kerr, vice-convener of the unions national milk committee, said five departures had taken place within five miles of his farm.

He said dairy companies could help matters by paying a better price for milk.

He urged an extension of the calf processing scheme, one of the measures introduced to help the industry cope with the effects of the BSE crisis.
