Tobacco farming threatens forests

CUTTING down forests to provide wood to cure tobacco is causing serious environmental damage around the world, reports The Guardian.

Around 114 million tonnes of solid wood a year was used between 1990 and 1995 to produce an annual 3.8m tonnes of cured tobacco, about half of the worlds entire production of tobacco.
