Variable yields on wheat

THERE are variable wheat yields for Hillfairs Farming at Heveningham in Suffolk. Sam Fairs says, “The first wheat crops have been pleasing, but the second crops have been more disappointing.”

First crop wheat is averaging 10t/ha (4t/acre), which is good. Second crops have been averaging 8t/ha (3.2t/acre). “Malacca is not good on second wheat and we will probably grow something else for extra yield.”

The quality of Malacca is not brilliant. The protein is 12.5%, with a specific weight of 75.5Kg/hl. He says the Hagberg is on the low side.

He grows other crops for seed. Option yielded 10t/ha (4t/acre). “This may be worth growing for its extra yield.” He says that Claire is holding its own and Deben has done very well.

There are 160ha (400 acres) of crops left and he expects to be finished by Saturday (26 August).
