The increased cost of living is altering shopping patterns with more consumers choosing cheaper cuts of chicken rather than more expensive breast meat.

According to an article in yesterday’s Daily Mail, many consumers are now opting for thigh or brown leg meat in order to budget their grocery shopping.

Figures released by Waitrose show that sales of free-range chicken thighs and legs are rising by 55% a year, while breast meat purchases are growing by just 10%, said the article.

Waitrose, the first major retailer to sell brown free-range turkey thigh meat, said: “It’s a cost-effective way to enjoy high welfare, great quality food.”
