Uncleaned combines pose fire risk, says NFU Mutual

Farmers are being warned of the fire risk presented by uncleaned combines during hot weather.

As temperatures soar across the country, rural insurer NFU Mutual said farmers can take steps to avoid losing valuable combining time due to fires during harvest.

"Taking the right precautions can help prevent harvest fires and stop a minor fire becoming a life-threatening disaster," said NFU Mutual's Ian Jewitt.

"You can never overdo cleaning out dust and chaff from hot spots such as the engine compartment, belts and pulleys.

"This is just as important in difficult weather when dust crops can lead to high build-ups of debris."

Mr Jewett said farmers should stop combining when temperature gauges were "in the red" or bearings were running hot.

"You should also keep a sprayer filled with water on hand in the event of a crop fire," he added.
