While reading the 19 June issue of Farmers Weekly I became drawn to a picture of Paul McCartney with a crowd of minor celebs. I thought perhaps the editor was trying to roll back the years for those of us that remember Smash Hits. Much to my horror this was not so; the "mad peer" going on about having a meat-free day once a week to try and slow down climate change.
Frankly I don't know whether to laugh or delete my Beatles songs from my iPod, but I would like to know whether he uses vegetable-based dye to colour his hair.
The next article was one that helped to restore my faith in the world. Caroline Drummond, chief executive of LEAF, is to receive an MBE for services to agriculture - thoroughly deserved for all the effort she has put in to assist and publicise our industry. To think she started as a crops lecturer at Shuttleworth College; Ms Drummond had the unenviable job of kicking us all out of the bar at last orders. No wonder the opportunity to join LEAF was so attractive.
While mentioning LEAF I must again congratulate everyone at Russell Smith Farms again this year for a fantastic Open Farm Sunday. It was a pleasure for myself and the guys who work here on the estate to be a part of such a fun day. If you don't get involved, you should. Like me, you will be astonished at the level of interest people have in our industry and the countryside we manage. Hopefully, some visitors left realising we are not as bad as some would like to make out. ( No names mentioned RSPB.)
Well the next time I have to tap this keyboard we shall hopefully be well into harvest, so lets hope we can look forward to an easy one for us all.
