Rain frustrates in Buckie

Spring barley is yielding well at MC Thomson & Sons’ farm in Clochan, Buckie, Scotland, but harvest progress is frustrating.

“It’s very slow – stop, start – it’s just been desperate,” said Frank Thomson. “The quality is still there at the moment but we really need to get on now.”

The 120ha (300 acres) of Optic cut so far had yielded over 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) and quality had been excellent.

That left 200ha (500 acres) of Oxbridge, Publican and trials of Forensic spring barley to cut, as well as 80ha (200 acres) of Robigus, Alchemy, and Predator wheat and 40ha (100 acres) of oats.

Crop: Spring barley
Variety: Optic
Area: 120ha (300 acres)
Yield: >6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre)

Crop: Winter barley
Variety: Boost
Area: 24ha (60 acres)
Yield: >8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre)

Variety: Volume
Area: 1ha (2.5 acres)
Yield: 9.8t/ha (4t/acre)

 Syngenta

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2008/09 variety with very high UK treated yields and the top score for resistance to lodging with PGR. Combined with an unbeaten second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, this new variety from Syngenta Seeds will help UK growers rise to the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
