The British Free-Range Egg Producers Association (BFREPA) held its annual AGM and conference at Stoneleigh Park this week, presenting their awards for the best players in the industry and in their field.

Retailer of the Year went to Aldi supermarkets, who increased their sales of free-range eggs through a large-scale rebranding of free-range eggs in their stores across the UK.

Marketing Initiative of the Year was awarded to The Happy Egg Company for the Happy Egg brand, which John Retson, BFREPA chairman, said had helped expand sales of all free-range eggs.

The Producer of the year award was split this year - John and Ellen Jones from Wales took the honours for producing for five years or less, and Charlie Stevens from West Yorkshire won in the category for over five years of production.

The Lifetime Achievement Award went to John Campbell from Glenrath Eggs in Peebles, Scotland, who also won the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year's International Egg Conference.

In his acceptance speech Mr Campbell told the audience he'd be in charge at Glenrath until he 'popped his clock', and discussed his views on issues such as the 2012 cage ban, the current oversupply of free-range eggs, and government intervention.

The Egg Quality Competition saw Lohmann Birds shine as they took home first (John and Amanda Evans), second (Mary Thompson) and third (Martyn and Emma Longford) place.

The winners of the Photographic Competition were Matt and John Orme. Best Stand at the conference went to Stonegate.
