Harvest 09: Finished near Inverness

Jim Whiteford has finished harvest at Shandwick Mains, Tain, Inverness, and expects most people to finish up this week, despite a few days of mist and drizzle.

Viscount and Istabraq winter wheat yielded 10.4t/ha (4.2t/acre), while Waggon spring barley averaged 7t/ha (2.85t/acre).

“The barley was not as good as previous years as it suffered in the drought in June and July.”

Having finished his own harvest, Mr Whiteford helped a neighbour, combining 26ha (65 acres) of winter wheat.

“Unfortunately we managed to pick up the Stone of Destiny, which made a mess of the header parts.”

He had also finished all the baling, clearing up 34ha (85 acres) with two balers in one afternoon, and was now busy sowing Volume winter barley and Viscount winter wheat.

Duxford winter wheat is an HGCA Recommended List 2009/10 variety with very high UK treated yields and a maximum 9 rating for resistance to lodging with and without PGR. Combined with the highest second wheat yield and a balanced disease resistance profile, Duxford will continue to help UK growers meet the challenge of producing more grain profitably.
