Almost done in Scotland

Most people had finished harvest across Scotland and the north of England, leaving just a few bits and pieces to clear up, said Trevor Harriman, general manager of Scotgrain.

“The weather over the past couple of weeks has allowed people to get more or less done.”

Quality in general had been reasonable, but the sharp drop in prices was preventing many farmers from selling except where absolutely necessary, he said.

“The spot sellers are going to find it difficult because the September-sold wheat is now clashing with harvest sales.”

Fieldwork was progressing reasonably well, said Mr Harriman.

“The window for oilseed rape closed with a lot less in the ground than would have been hoped, but there is a lot of time left to get the winter cereals in.”
