What are tractor makers doing about farm security?
As part of Farmers Weekly’s Farm Security special we review what tractor manufacturers are doing to keep their machines secure.
JCB
JCB runs a one-key-fits-all policy but whether that remains the case is under discussion. From April, all ag-spec machines will be Datatagged. Keypad immobilisers are already fitted to some JCB construction kit but not its ag machines.
Fendt
Fendt is the first tractor maker to go down the route of unique micro-chipped keys for its tractors. Currently only available on range-topping 900-series machines, the automotive-style technology is expected to trickle its way down through the company’s entire line-up in time.
Each new tractor is issued with three orange-coloured keys, one of which stays with the dealer. Although the same key will open any Fendt tractor, it will only start the tractor it is allocated to.
Case IH
Case IH sticks with a single key for all its machines but now fits either mechanical or electronic ignition isolator switches which might serve to baffle the casual criminal.
The company says it is looking into the options for immobilisers and satellite tracking.
New Holland
Says it is looking into the logistics involved with fitting a tagging system.
McCormick/Landini
The first brands to offer Datatag as a standard feature on their tractors. Isolator switches are fitted as standard and a key is required to open bonnet panels.

Massey Ferguson
All tractors start with one key except the company’s 4400-series machines which can have one of up to 25 different key patterns.
The company says it is developing a tracking system as part of its AgCommand integrated GPS guidance and performance monitoring (telematics) package.
John Deere
Tractors can be ordered with optional unique door keys but the ignition key remains the standard item. The firm also offers an “anti-vandal” kit, with lockable fuel-filler, hydraulic oil cap and bonnet panels.
The company says it is currently investigating immobiliser options. Deere subsidiary Vapormatic has recently launched a retro-fit keypad immobiliser.
Claas
A range of retro-fit security kit offered, but no factory-fit options for its tractors.
However key-chip immobilisers are fitted as standard on Scorpion telehandlers.
Same Deutz Fahr
Offers a range of immobilisers and tractor security systems and will fit Datatag/CESAR devices if specified by a customer.
