Bean yields in Shropshire have been good, but pea quality is mixed, according to Stuart Dolphin at Wrekin Grain.
“Harvest is about done and dusted and we’ve had some nice bean samples that will make reasonable premiums.”
Some bean crops had yielded over 5t/ha (2t/acre), but peas were less exciting, with a lot of bleached samples. “Even so, they should get a premium over feed.”
Cereal quality had been good, with most of the milling wheat harvested before the rain, said Mr Dolphin. “Anything cut after the rain did lose its Hagberg, but we haven’t had any cases of high mycotoxins.”
Group three and four wheats were also commanding a premium over feed, he added. “It’s worth getting everything tested.”
Farmers had drilled all their oilseed rape, most of which was growing well in decent seedbeds. “That bodes well for next year.”
The barley acreage was significantly down, with producers opting for oilseed rape or wheat, and choosing Solstice and Gallant as the favourite milling varieties.
