A woman has been killed by cattle while walking her dogs.

The incident took place on a stretch of the Pennine Way just outside Gayle, near Hawes in North Yorkshire, on Sunday afternoon. The woman's two dogs, both on leads, panicked the cattle which then charged at her.

North Yorkshire Police have not named the woman, but said she was slim and about 5ft 2in tall.

Her dogs have been described as a white and brown spaniel and a small, collie-type dog, on red and white leads.

A North Yorkshire Police spokeswoman said: "She was surrounded by a herd of cattle and calves, and as a result of dogs being present the cattle reacted in an aggressive manner."

Anyone who saw the woman before the incident has been asked to contact the police, the spokeswoman added.
