Simon Dann was busy cutting triticale in Tuddenham, Norfolk, yesterday (27 August), and hoped to be back onto wheat today.
“The past three weeks have been trying, to say the least,” he said. “It’s overcast now, but the combing wheels are rolling.”
Mr Dann shared combining with three neighbours, who had all finished their oilseed rape, winter barley and spring barley, and were now well into the wheat.
“Yields have been good and quality is also fine,” he said. The triticale was slightly disappointing at 6.2t/ha (2.5t/acre) on light land.
Some Xi19 averaged 8.6t/ha (3.5t/acre), and a bit of Alchemy cut on Tuesday made 12.3t/ha (5t/acre) at 16.3% moisture.
Tipple and Cocktail spring barley were also excellent at almost 7.4t/ha (3t/acre), while Carat winter barley averaged 7.6t/ha (3.1t/acre). All made malting quality.
Astrid, Bravour, and a new pioneer variety of oilseed rape all averaged about 3.8t/ha (1.55t/acre).
The group now had 100ha (250 acres) of wheat to finish off.
