Tim Carson is pleased to be back into wheat, but it was ready to cut three weeks ago before the rain, and has started to sprout.
“It’s just feed wheat, thankfully – we got all our milling wheat in early before the rain.”
Solstice wheat at Alton Barnes, Devizes, Wiltshire, averaged 8t/ha (3.25t/acre) and had slightly low protein.
Yields of later cut feed wheat had held up at 9.5-10t/ha (3.8-4t/acre), but suffered on heavy land where it didn’t get its roots down in the autumn.
Castille and Astrid oilseed rape had yielded about average at 3.7t/ha (1.5t/acre), and came off at 11% moisture.
Harvest was now about 75% through, he said.
“We’re just pleased to be getting back on again – and thank goodness the moisture is coming back down – we used 5000 litres of fuel to dry 300t of wheat last week.
“There shouldn’t be a lot left by the weekend, and it’s nice to be able to get on and bale all the straw.”
