Many regions are reporting high maize yields, with up to 20% more fresh yield than in previous years, says Neil Groom, technical manager for Grainseed.
“It has been an easy harvest so far with good ground conditions, but early growers should not be tempted to harvest until the crop is fully mature so maize goes into the clamp at 30% dry matter.”
Further north, crops have shown signs of frost damage, he says. “Where crops do get frosted, an assessment needs to be made on the level of damage.”
“Always apply a chemical based additive to severely frosted maize to prevent heating and spoilage at feed-out.”
