Russell lucky in Nottinghamshire
Farmers still had 25-30% of wheat to cut in Nottinghamshire, according to Retford-based Russell Fraser.
“Some of the wheat is starting to sprout in the ear – it’s not going to be long before it’s a write-off.”
However, Tiln Farms Ltd had been very lucky with the weather, and Mr Fraser had not had to dry a tonne of grain so far. “It’s all under 15.5% moisture.”
Yields had been good, with Cordiale averaging 8.3t/ha (3.4t/acre), although low protein consigned it to the feed bin. Humber disappointed at 7.25t/ha (2.9t/acre).
Winter barley was excellent, at 6.5t/ha (2.6t/acre) – 1.5t/ha (0.6t/acre) above average, said Mr Fraser.
That left 50ha (125/acres) of winter wheat and 30ha (74 acres) of spring rape to finish off once it stopped raining.
