Wheat yields 10% down at Boxted

Wheat yields are 10% below average on the uplands at Clive Apps’ Boxted Lodge Farm, Romney, Kent.

“The oilseed rape is very late, so we have cut some rape, then some Cordiale winter wheat, then back onto the rape,” he said.

“The wheat is very variable – it’s not disastrous but on the uplands it is 10% down.”

However, oilseed rape, which Mr Apps was finishing combining today (6 August), was yielding better than average.

Most of the Castille and Cabernet was running at about 4.3t/ha (1.75t/acre). “The Cabernet has definitely yielded better than the Castille, but it is very late.

“Luckily the rain has been skirting us, and people are starting to get into wheat around here.

“But we had a bit storm two days ago, and that’s why I’ve wanted to get the oilseed rape out of the way.”

Better grain prices were making up for the reduction in yields, he added. “Rightly or wrongly, I have sold all my wheat today because I’m concerned about where the markets will go.”
