Only beans left to cut near Worcester

Andrew Goodman has finished combining wheat and oats at Walgrove Farm, Worcester, leaving just the spring beans to do.

Wheat and oats had both averaged 6.25t/ha, with bushel weights of 69kg/hl and 48kg/hl respectively.

“Bushel weights have been poor and it’s certainly been fun baling straw,” he said. “The ground is so soft.”

While oat yields hadn’t been too bad, Mr Goodman reckoned wheat was 30% down this year.

“We’ve just had so much rain. We couldn’t bale straw on one field for over three weeks.”

Despite this, he hoped to get cutting again early next week to finish this year’s somewhat variable harvest.

The 32ha of Fuego spring beans would hopefully be good enough to command a premium for human consumption, he said.

“It won’t be our best year. We’ve left lots of ruts and compaction.”

While combining had been tricky, there was no rapeseed to get in, so Mr Goodman hadn’t been rushed to get on with cultivations.
