Combining is progressing well at John Robinson’s farm near Ponteland, Northumberland, despite the wet weather.

However, barley yields were nothing to write home about, he said. “It is making the grade, but only just.”

So far the 50ha of Cassia had yielded about 7.5t/ha, with a bushelweight of about 66kg/hl.

“Wet weather has rained us off for today (31 July) and it’s supposed to be wet tomorrow too, but the crop is taking no damage,” he said.

He had another 100ha of Cassia and Volume winter barley left to cut, but it was only just ready, so he wasn’t too concerned just yet.

Crop: Winter Barley
Variety: Cassia
Area: 50ha
Yield: 7.5t/ha
