Dungannon Limousins reach 6000gns peak

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Limousin trade at Dungannon yesterday saw a wealth of breeders and commercial cattlemen pack the sale ring to secure new herd sires and with the sale gaining export status it was no surprise a number of cattle headed to buyers from mainland UK.

Topping the sale was the pre-sale show champion Carmon Cantona from Francis McAuley, Toomebridge, Co Antrim. By the great breeding sire Wilodge Vantastic and out of Jockey daughter Carmorn Rosie, Cantona sold to local farmer and butcher Derek Frew for his Frewstown pedigree herd.

Cockermouth sees £4000 show heifer sale

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Cockermouth market in the Lake District is the latest to receive its share of the cash being liberally spent this spring by commercial cattle exhibitors with Alistair and Liz Vance digging deep to secure the reserve champion from last Friday's show and sale of store cattle at £4000.

The heifer, a black Limousin cross entry from Andrew and Karen Nicholson, Swinside End, had stood second in the Limousin heifer class behind the overall champion, another one from the Nicholsons, under judge Willie Seels, Doncaster.

The champion went on to sell for £1650 to the judge and like the reserve champion will no doubt be making an appearance on the show circuit later in the year.

And the Nicholsons also enjoyed success in the steer class when they collected the red ticket in the Limousin bullocks with one which later sold for £1000 to J J Chrichton, Loughrigg. But the top call in this section went to R J and A Y Armstrong, Terrace Farm, when they traded one at £1040.

Also at this money was a British Blue steer from Seatoller Farm and close behind at £1030 was a Blonde steer from Beckside.

Aberdeen-Angus plan new health initiative

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

With health status becoming an increasingly important selling tool for many breeders, it's not surprise to see the Aberdeen Angus Society breaking new ground and increasing the criteria for stock offered at breed society show and sales.

Top of the requirements will be an insistence that all cattle entered for breed sales will have to come from herds undertaking annual testing for Johne's disease in a CHeCs approved health scheme or a Johne's accredited herd.

Alongside this all cattle at sales will have to come from BVD accredited herds. Where herds are not accredited then animals entered for sale will have to be tested negative for the BVD antigen and vaccinated against BVD within three months prior to the sale.

Both moves are designed to give buyers increased confidence in the Angus cattle forward at breed society sales, explains AACS chief executive Ron McHattie. "Johne's disease is perhaps the most difficult to diagnose and control, this move will give buyers the assurance that all herds are monitoring and improving their Johne's health status. Additionally, the BVD move will ensure no persistently infected cattle are sold at society sales."

Vendors will also have the chance to have a herd health declaration included in future sale catalogues detailing their herd's status in a range of diseases and easing buyers' quests for high health status stock.

New winter fair for south west

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks

Following the formal confirmation of Smithfield's move to Stoneleigh, plans have been announced for a new South West Winter Fair at Sedegmoor Auction Centre, Bridgewater.

And with £1000 up for grabs in the cattle championship there's certain to be interest from a number of exhibitors.

However, I'm a little baffled by the apparent reasoning for this initiative - with the organisers stating it has been started to fill the void left by Smithfield and citing Stoneleigh as difficult to get to for farmers from Cornwall, Devon or Dorset.

I'll not dispute the fact that its further than Shepton Mallet was, but surely its a good deal easier to get to from the south west than central London was? Having made journeys from Devon to both Stoneleigh and Earls Court myself I know which one I'd rather do with stock.

Nonetheless, I hope the event is a success for all concerned, but am now wondering if the winter show circuit is starting to get a little cramped with everyone trying to have a piece of the action.

No date has yet been announced for the South West Winter Fair.....

This Friday's humour offering

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks

Following the discovery of last Friday's extreme shepherding video, I spent a few minutes earlier seeing what I could dig out for a bit of light relief this week.

Now I've seen some wild cattle in my time (of many different breeds too, before anyone starts blaming Lims), but if any of them had been quite as violent as the one in this video its safe to say I think we'd all be in trouble.

Enjoy.....

The small selection of Continental bulls on offer at Ashford on Tuesday saw Limousins trade at £1550 and £1300 and the single Charolais on offer make £1300 too.

Jan Boomaars was the vendor of the Charolais and this one was by Gretnahouse Umpire, a Doonally New son.

Among the females offered on the same day top price of £1500 went to a British Blue cow with an Aberdeen Angus sired calf at foot from Kingswood Farmers. This one, Entrepenant Tabitha, is by Visconti De Fontaine and out of Bringlee Freerman sired dam Entreprenant Mariana.

Innovative approach to Sussex catalogue

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Its rare for me to praise individual auction companies, but in this instance I feel some comment is valid on the excellent initiative shown by Hobbs Parker in including photographs of all the bulls in the catalogue for next month's show and sale of Sussex cattle at Ashford.

While the entry is only a limited one it does show great foresight to add photographs to the catalogue and enables buyers to get some idea of the quality of the cattle on offer before heading to the sale.

Congratulations to all concerned, a big step forward in helping buyers and hopefully encouraging attendance at the sale.

Anyone with an interest in Charolais cattle breeding will know of Peter Old's Moynton herd. Managed for many years by Mike Yeandle, the herd has enjoyed show and sale success across the country and produced many top quality animals.

Due to Mike's impending retirement the herd's owner Peter Old has decided to reduce numbers and as such will be offering a total of 42 head for sale on Saturday 4 April at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Bridgewater. On offer will be 19 cows (five with calves at foot), nine maiden heifers and nine bulls.

Store cattle still soaring across the UK

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Looking at market reports from sales centres across the UK in recent days and weeks its clear there has been no let up in store cattle trade and there's not event a lot of grass about in many parts yet.

Bakewell Market on Monday this week saw 135 steers offered with auctioneer Norman Tweddle reporting all cattle well bid for regardless of age, size of shape. Topping the trade was a £1050 bid for British Blue steers from Mrs M Renshaw, Butterton, with Blondes from J T Cantrell, Macclesfield making up to £950. Among the heifers at the same venue the top call was £965 for Limousin sired entries from J Channer, Selston.

Topping the trade at Exeter last Friday were Limousin steers at £1090 from G R Vallance, Ashburton with more Limousins from M and J Hoskin reaching £1040 and South Devons not far behind at £1005 and British Blues making up to £900. Heifers were also a flyer in the south west with a top call of £902 paid for Aberdeen Angus crosses from R and R Retter, Honiton.

And the £1000 barrier was broken at Melton Mowbray on Tuesday too when Mr Sherratt, Swadlincote sold 24 month old Charolais steers at exactly that figure. Also selling well were Bazadais cross heifers at £865.

Finally, at Hexham last Friday the top price was a £1250 sale for a 3/4 Limousin cross steer from Lowfield Farm, Willington and at £1190 were Charolais cross steers from Barharrow, Castle Douglas.

It's only to be hoped the prime trade keeps pace with these exceptional store prices and finishers are rewarded for the confidence they're showing in the cattle sector.

Hoggets back above £100 again

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Hogget prices bounced back above £100 at several centres earlier this week with a top price of £109.50 achieved at Carlisle on Monday for Suffolks from Messrs Hetherington, Old Hall Farm, while others from the same vendor made £106.50 and £104.50. Best among the Texel crosses offered on the same day was £107.50 from the same vendors.

A top of £100 was recorded at St Boswells yesterday too, when Anne Cranston, Broomhill, Selkirk made that money for Texels.

Meanwhile, at Exeter on the same day an entry of 494 new season lambs met a firm demand, selling to a top of £84/head and returning an average up 8p/kg at £80.70/head.

Here's hoping this sort of trade can be maintained and hopefully improved on later in the season once the bulk of new season lambs hit the market.

Smithfield champions net £1000 bonus

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Following on swiftly from news about the new Smithfield event for this year is news of an extra bonus for last year's champions, Alistair and Liz Vance.

Having bought their Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair champion, Divine Diva, from Harrison and Hetherington's Borderway Mart, Carlisle, in September last year for £3000, the Vances were awarded a £1000 cash prize by Brian Richardson (left) and David Pritchard of H and H last week.

vances presentation.JPG

The same cash bonus will be on offer to any purchaser of a beast from one of H and H's eight sales centres which goes on to win the championship honours at either Borderway Agri Expo, the Royal Highland Winter Fair, the English Winter Fair, the Royal Welsh Winter Fair or the newly launched AgriLIVE Smithfield.

Smithfield move confirmed and a new name too

| 8 Comments | No TrackBacks

The relocation of the Royal Smithfield Club's primestock competitions to Stoneleigh Park has been confirmed with a new event, AgriLIVE Smithfield, launched as a host to them.

The event, co-organised by RASE and the Royal Smithfield Club will, claims a press release from RASE ".....provide a new and exciting platform for the traditional Smithfield primestock classes and will have a very strong technical and commercial focus on husbandry, management and machinery."

With a focus on meeting the needs of the red meat industry, the event is aiming to bring together producers, processors and retailers to better understand the supply chain.

The event will take place on Friday 11 and Saturday 12 December 2009, with provisional dates of 3 and 4 December set for 2010.

As readers will be well aware I've long been a staunch advocate of Smithfield in all its many guises and while the concept of this event is worthwhile, the name is far from catchy!

Admittedly there are issues with using the traditional "Royal Smithfield Show" brand, but I thought the "Royal Smithfield Christmas Fair" name was working well and said it like it was. The new name is a touch too ambigious for me.

But, that aside, here's to the future of the Royal Smithfield Club's competitions in their new home and lets all get behind the event to make it the success it deserves to be.

Thainestone YFC calves hit £4000 record high

| 13 Comments | No TrackBacks

Trade at last week's show and sale of young farmers rearing cattle at Thainestone hit a record high when 20 year old Paul Wilson sold his Charolais cross British Blue x Limousin heifer, Lady Gaga, for £4000.

She sold for the record price to James and Audrey Forsyth, Mid Bishopton, Whithorn, who are previous winners of the Royal Highland Show's interbreed award with a commercial heifer.

Second top was a  £3000 call for a homebred Limousin cross steer Oscar from Aileen Ritchie, Burnside, Whitecairns. This one sold to Angus Cumming, Ellon.

At £1700 was the homebred champion Pixie Dust also from Miss Ritchie. This Limousin cross joined Oscar on the ride home with Mr Cumming.

Trade for the remaining entry was equally well contested with no fewer than 28 topping the £1000 mark.

Carlisle show potential steers reach £3200

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Topping Saturday's sale of show potential steers at Carlisle at £3200 was a Limousin cross shown by brothers Robert and Michael Scott of Thirlwall Castle, Greenhead. Their red steer sired by their registered Limousin stock sire, Cloughhead Titanic, and bred from a Limousin cross dam was knocked down to Donald MacPherson of Oban.

Meanwhile, the Trafford family, Bassenthwaite Hall Farm, Keswick, celebrated a double win  when they lifted the Supreme Championship award for their Limousin cross steer.

Their eyecatching entry, a black steer by the Trafford's imported French Limousin stock sire Vallion is bred from a 7/8 British Blue mother which is the same combination of breeding as Messrs Trafford's reserve champion at this event in 2008.  He sold for £3000 to Messrs Naylor, Derby.

Its an unusual departure from our usual offering of sale reports, but this video is well worth watching if only to wonder how much of it is real and how much is clever editing. Enjoy.....

Carlisle crossbred sale set to draw the crowds

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

After the extraordinary prices at Leyburn and more particularly Penrith last weekend, today and tomorrow will see the legions of commercial show cattle buyers descend on Carlisle's Borderway Mart for that centre's sale of crossbred heifers and steers.

However, like many things they do Harrison and Hetherington are doing a tad bigger than most, with more than 2600 cattle catalogued for the two day extravaganza.

Of course not all 2600 of these entries will be potential show winners, but I'd be quietly confident there will be a fair few top quality entries among those forward.

Sadly, I can't be there, but I hope to bring you a few details later in the day as the sale progresses.

Blackford Simmentals head south to NFUS boss

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Having just sold off his dairy herd it seems Jim McLaren the president of the Scottish NFU is keen to keep cattle grazing at his unit at Dargill, Crieff, and has bought most of the Blackford herd of Simmentals from Billy MacPherson and daughter Anne in a private deal.

There had, I believe, been plans afoot for a sale of the herd later in the year, but it seems Mr McLaren came up with an offer too good to refuse to secure 51 head of the herd for his new enterprise.

Leyburn show potentials sell to £6100

| 17 Comments | No TrackBacks

Meeting a more modest trade compared to that at Penrith on Sunday, Saturday's sale of show potential cattle at Leyburn sold to a top price of £6100 for the pre-sale show champion a Limousin cross heifer from John Smith Jackson, Haltwhistle, Northumberland.

This one, Mamma Mia, had picked up a number of tickets last year, including being champion baby beef at Countryside Live, Harrogate, and earning the same award at the East of England Livestock Festival, Peterborough. She sold to noted young showwoman Jennifer Hyslop, Barrhill, Ayrshire.

By stock sire Shire Apollo this one caught the eye of judge Kevin Ludgate again having been placed by him at Countryside Live last year.

Penrith show potentials soar to £13,000

| 30 Comments | No TrackBacks

This spring's trade for show potential commercial cattle moved into top gear at Penrith on Sunday as the Richardson family, Dufton, Appleby took all four top prices peaking at an amazing, if somewhat ridiculous, £13,000.

Leading the trade was their overall champion from the pre-sale show, a British Blue sired heifer, Sidewalk Sally, a tremendously long, clean lined heifer. That said, this heifer will have to win an absolute hatful of tickets to come anywhere close to repaying her mindblowing price tag. Buying this one were Phil and Sharon Sellers, Derby, to add to their show team for this year.

Revised lamb carcass competition for Royal Show

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

A revised lamb carcass competition at this year's Royal Show is aiming to encourage farmers to exhibit lambs suited for high volume markets.

The competition is for groups of six lambs which must be representative of the type of lambs produced by the farm's commercial flock. Carcasses must weigh 18-21kg and one of the carcasses will be butchered according to a set specification and priced as if being sold on the High Street, giving a saleable meat yield for the carcass.

"The inclusion of the saleable meat yield should make it a more meaningful competition from a commercial point of view, as well as attracting more contestants," adds Sarah Deeming, Royal Show livestock manager.

Royal Highland Show entry packs out soon

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

RHS Cattle 2 (blog).jpgEntry packs for this year's Royal Highland Show will soon be landing on exhibtors door mats, with the first main closing date being the 7th April.

The Show Society say they are looking forward to welcoming back exhibitors from England and Wales who were unable to show in 2008 due to Bluetongue restrictions. The Directors have ruled that all sheep, cattle and goats coming to the show must be vaccinated for blue tongue (so ensuring that all stock will be of a similar status to that from Scotland where vaccination is compulsory). There is not a requirement for this to have been done by a vet however.

Several young cows topped 2000gns on a day that saw trade reach 2600gns at the dispersal of E E Marks and Son's 340-strong Loddonvalley Holstein herd at Basingstoke, Hampshire this week - and even cows with "issues" found no shortage of takers.

Around 25% of the cattle required qualifying statements from the rostrum concerning, fertility, feet or udders, but buyers were undeterred and levelled the 161 cows and calved heifers at £1342.

Lot 131 £2600.jpgThe 2600gns top was reached three times. A fresh second calver by Bosside Reuben carrying the Charavon herd prefix was one of them and she joined 16 other purchases made by Messrs Spiby and Partners, Chichester.
