Tomorrow's Lanark Texel trade news

| 13 Comments | No TrackBacks
No, I haven't got the crystal ball out and started predicting the trade in advance, this is just to forewarn you that, due to a prior committment, I won't be in Lanark tomorrow. (Instead I'll be stood in the middle of a wet showground at Aylesbury judging at Bucks County Show - annoyingly I didn't realise the clash until it was too late).

However, we will be bringing news of the top prices throughout the day thanks to the fine efforts of the regular TS photographer and one of my colleagues here at FW.

Hopefully it will be a good trade and provide for plenty of updates through the day.

Following Saturday's more than bouyant trade for Scotch Mule shearlings at Castle Douglas trade for ewe lambs at the same centre on Monday can only be described as phenomenal, with the 8034 lambs sold levelling the day at £101.95, up a mammoth £21 on last year.

Leading the trade, the dearest ever seen at the mart, was the champion pen from the pre-sale show, a pen of 40 from W Lockart and Son, Culdoach, Kirkcudbright. These sold to the judge Mr Booth of Helsey Hall Farm, Settle, for £165.

Next best was a £144/head bid for the reserve champion pen from J and A Brown, Macqueston, Tynron, which sold to H J Paterson, East Dykes, Strathaven. Others from the same home traded at £131.

Overall 113 pens sold for £100 or more, leaving breeders with a healthy return for their efforts, no doubt driven by the strong cull ewe trade being experienced across the country. It's a quite remarkable trade for Mule ewe lambs and the hope is that buyers aren't left disappointed if they come to sell some of these lambs as shearlings next year.

The Sowray's then went on to present the second prize British Blue cross bull calf and reserve champion, which also sold for the next highest price of £335.

The Sowary's are no stranger to the showing scene, after bagging the champion title at February's inaugural BOCM Pauls sponsored calf show. Therefore it was know surprise they were also responsible for the first and third prize Limousin heifer calves at this weeks show and sale, which made £318 and £225 respectively, along with the first prize Continentals class winner, a Charolais bull calf which sold for £315.

Lanark Texel sale preview

| 7 Comments | No TrackBacks
After the excitement caused by the world record price achieved at last year's Lanark Texel sale for Deveronvale Perfection, I suspect this year's sale may be a little less newsworthy - at least outside of the agricultural press anyway.

However, looking through the catalogue there are some interesting tups entered. As last year I'm going to restrict this preview to the tup lambs only as this is where most of the big money will be spent.

The first pen to catch my eye is the Rascarrel entry from Thomas MacTaggart, which features lambs by a number of sires, including 14,000gns Clougher President from last year's Lanark sale. Also here are a pair by Kerryhill Oliver, a Brague Nixon son, so there's potential in this pen.

Next up in my pick are the Drumpark lambs from the Scotts, these include sons of Kelso Oxygen, sire of Deveronvale Perfection and also 12,000gns Drumpark President for the Scotts last year. Interesting here too is a maternal brother to President by Forkins Powerpacker.

Then comes the offering from the Reid family. First up are Grace and Hugh Reid, with a brace of tup lambs by Kelso Prostar (the lamb passed unsold at 45,000gns last year) and out of a dam bred by Neil and Emma Pamplin and bought at last year's Worcester sale for 4000gns.

In Malcolm Reid's pen are lambs by Mellor Vale Officer and Officer son Prostar, as well as those by Kelso Pot Luck, a Douganhill McFly son, Malcolm's first lamb in the ring is a full brother to last year's 40,000gns lamb Kelso Pavarotti.

Selling at 2050gns was Hebrides Eddie Nan again from the Robinsons, a Weaverline Bench Eddie daughter out of Hebrides Raven Nan, an S Fermo Aerostar Raven daughter. She sold having calved in June, to W Clark, Ecclefechan.

Then making 2000gns was Aghavilly Marker Nancy from Noel McGarragher, a Southland Marker daughter out of Aghavilly Juror Nancy, a Ked Juror daughter. Having calved in mid July she sold to Newheaton Holsteins, Cornhill-on-Tweed.

Welsh Blacks secure HCC funding for breed development

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
In a bid to help breeders identify the best performing cattle and help develop the breed for the future, the Welsh Black Cattle Society has secured HCC funding for a number of projects.

The grant funding will enable the Society to adopt the ABRI Breedplan Herd Performance Monitoring programme. Uniquely, however, the Society will also be incorporating Linear Assessments and Linear Measurements into the programme.

A field officer will score cows for feet, legs and udder and teats. An American concept of body measurements to identify balanced cows will contribute the remainder of the BodySUM index.

The Welsh black cattle society's Chairman, Mr Bob Williams said : "as a Suckler breed we must strive to take the middle road and retain the balance between the breeds milk producing attributes and beefing qualities. Future farmers will demand easily managed cows - easy calving with quick growing calves that require no supervision in terms of suckling supervision. By also focusing on mobility traits we can also enhance the breeds longevity and hence profitability

Coupling these linear assessments and performance recording will help us achieve a balanced approach to breeding, to produce honest and profitable cows."

A secondary project see's the establishment of a Bull Evaluation Centre in conjunction with IBERS at Gogerddan. Here a dozen bull calves from cows with superior BodySUM indexes will be Performance recorded for each of the next three years. Free semen will be distributed from one bull calf amongst participating herds to establish an across breed reference sire thus making future identification of superior genetics easier.

"We hope that this innovative approach to collaborative breed improvement will demonstrate our intent to remain commercially focused thus retaining our market leading position" said Mr Bob Williams.

The project has evolved from a breeders discussion group set up by Menter a Busnes  as part of the 'Cyswllt Amaeth' project in Ceredigion which has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development. It will be featured at the Breeds First National Show being held in conjunction with Talybont Show on the 28th of August, 2010.

Night Dancer, by Luggsmill Lainey, has been flushed by new owner James Collinge and was offered for sale here again today. Andrew Bishop bid well in an attempt to buy her back for the Bishops flock although he wasn't the final underbidder, but eventually she passed unsold from the ring... An interesting spectacle!

Busy couple of days planned for Carlisle

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
As anyone perusing the classified adverts in recent weeks will have noticed the next couple of days are set to be busy on the sheep sales front for the H and H team in Carlisle.

Coupled with more than 1100 Beltex catalogued for sale are a further 85 Suffolks, 124 Rouge, 120 Bleus and also a production sale for the Haddo flock of Texels.

Unfortunately, I've not had a chance to look through the catalogues and provide any sort of preview, however, I will be in Carlisle from about lunchtime tomorrow onwards to provide coverage of the sales and keep you all as up to date as I possibly can.

It's set to be a busy couple of days, but hopefully a profitable few for all concerned and no doubt I'll run into a good few of you round the ringside too....

Brazilians seek out UK Angus semen

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
An export order for 100,000 straws of Aberdeen-Angus semen, believed to be the largest ever single consignment shipped from the UK, has been secured by Devon-based UK Sire Services from Brazilian genetics company Araucaria.

The order represents about 10% of Brazil's annual Aberdeen-Angus imports which currently total 1m doses a year, a figure which has risen by 374% in the last five years, explains Rob Wills of UK Sire Services. "The bulls selected have come from a number of breeders and have been selected for their high genetic merit, being in the top 1% for growth and calving ease but with an emphasis on moderate frame score."

Semen selected has come from bulls bred in the Blackhaugh, Tofts, Melview, Nightingale, Rosemead, McClemens, Warrenho and Lockerley herds.

Dingwall and Quoybrae store lamb trade a flyer

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
Store lamb prices at the first sales of the year in northern Scotland have soared as buyers rewarded bt this srping's strong prime trade have passed their earnings and crucially confidence back to hill farmers and crofters.

At Dingwall on Tuesday 3681 North Country Cheviot wethers sold to a top of £64 for a pen from Knockglass, Dornoch, while the entry averaged £50.82, a rise of £3.28 on the year. Ewe lambs of the same breed peaked at £72 for a single lamb, while the 1652 forward averaged £48.68, a lift of £2.92 on last year.

However, it was the Texel and Suffolk cross lambs which saw the greatest rise, with the 662 Texel crosses averaging £58.65, up £7.63 on the same sale last year. Top among these were pens from Brora, Knockglass and 145 Badnellan. In the Suffolks the average lifted by a massive £10.50 to level at £59.65 for 274 lambs sold.

The auctioneers report that all lambs met an extremely satisfactory sale with stronger, fitter lambs showing the bigger increase.

Full Bicester and Thame sheep fair report

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
A predicted shortage of breeding sheep across the country and few sales with numbers to offer early in the season saw last week's Bicester and Thame Sheep Fair record averages up across the board with vendors expectations exceeded in nearly every class of sheep offered, according to Rob Lea of Thame Farmers Mart.

"Quality on offer was definitely improved on last year, with buyers converging on the sale from across the UK. A few left empty handed having failed to secure the sheep they wanted at a price they felt comfortable with, but most buyers seemed happy enough to bid well for the sheep on offer."

Top prices of the day and the best average was seen in the Suffolk x Mule shearlings where the best bid was a £175 call for a pen from Eddie Bulman from his run of 400 which hadn't been tupped as ewe lambs. Overall average for the 5360 Suffolk cross shearlings sold was a healthy £123.10, up £10 on last year.

Meanwhile, Mr Lea reports there was standing room only ringside when the Mule shearlings were offered, these were topped at £142 by North Country Mules from Rob and Caroline Mole, Chearsley, from their run of 100 forward on the day. The 6994 Mules sold levelled at £114.15, a rise of £20 on the year.

In the Continental crosses the best price was a £188 bid for Beltex crosses from Gore Farms, Culworth. The 889 Beltex crosses forward sold to average £121.60, with the 1008 Texel crosses sold hitting a high spot of £169 for a pen from Garfield Stephens, Kirby Bellars, the average among these was £128.97.

And the best of the Lleyn and Lleyn crosses on offer made £122 for a pen from Messrs Beaverfast, Thornborough. Average for the 341 sold was £113.56.

Store lamb trade was also strong despite the recent grass shortage in the local area, reports Mr Lea. "There were plenty of longer keep lambs forward which hadn't had much grass in recent weeks, but trade for these was still strong with the lowest price on the day in the £40 region." Best of the store lambs on offer made up to £77, with the entry averaging a respectable £51/head and plenty of lambs in the high £60's.

In the ewe lambs the top price of £80 was paid five times, firstly for four pens of Beltex crosses from David Wadland and then also for Suffolk x Mule ewe lambs from Messrs A R and J Collett, Culworth.

Across in the ram ring trade was more selective, but still hit a high spot of £600 for a Charollais ram lamb from Messrs Hawes, Little Chesterton. Suffolk ram lambs sold to a top of £480 for Gordon Beddie, while Texel shearlings sold to a peak of £495 for Jane Roff, Pavenham. Overall clearance was good though with the auctioneers reporting a solid ram trade for an early season sale. (Thame Farmers Mart).

Bidders came from far and wide for the recent dispersal sale of the entire milking portion of Messrs F and E Thomlinison and Son, Bolton Park, Mealsgate.

The top price of the day was a 2900gns bid for a newly calved Ayrshire cow. She went to Messrs McIntyre, Stewarton who also secured a Guernsey cow for the next best price of 2000gns.

Close behind was a call of 1900gns for another Guernsey, this time going to W J F Ramsay, Drummore. The same buyers also went away with a Guernsey cow, in-calf to Jensgolden Victory Hunter. This one sold for 1800gns.

J W McIntyre paid the same money for another cow of the same breed, this time in-calf to Lang Haven Spider Nomar.

Three entries secured a bid of 1750gns. The first of which was from W J F Ramsay, who took home a Jersey cow.

A Guernsey cow bought on behalf of a client in Surrey also made the same money with prolific buyer, J W McIntyre paying the same for a June calved Jersey.

Two Guernseys made 1700gns, the first of which calved last month. She was bought on behalf of a client in Surrey. The second also calved around the same time and went to A and R Paton, Avonbrdge.

Averages: 62 Jersey cows and heifers; £931.96, 47 Ayrshire cows and heifers; £1149.20, 137 Guernsey cows and heifers; £1029.84 (Harrison and Hetherington)

Limousin society puts health at top of sales agenda

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

From 1 May next year all stock entered for nominated premier Limousin Society sales will have to come from herds which are members of, and adhering to the terms of, a CHeCS licensed herd health scheme.

Announcing the change BLCS chairman Jim Bloom said that customer reaction to the society's ongoing health initiatives and herd health declarations at sales had been hugely positive. "This next step will enable us to deliver animals to the market with a known health status which is a real added value to both pedigree and commercial producers."

The society's new policy is formed of three strands, firstly from 1 May 2011 herds selling at premier collective society sales have to be members of and adhering to, the terms of a CHeCS approved herd health scheme. Minimum standard for this will be a whole herd test for Johne's.

The second part of the initiative is that all animals, male and female and including calves at foot must be from either a BVD accredited herd with a CHeCS scheme of have been tested BVD virus free. In addition all animals forward will have to be BVD vaccinated prior to sale. Pregnant animals must have had testing and vaccination completed prior to service.

And thirdly the cash-back health initiative refund from the society, for herds who are members of and adhering to the terms of a CHeCS approved scheme will increase from £2 to £4 per animal for all participating herds in 2010, subject to an annual review thereafter.

Sales denoted as premier sales in 2011 will include the May and October Carlisle sales as well as Red Ladies day and the autumn sale at Stirling. Subject to an ongoing review the policy may then be rolled out at other society sale centres including Brecon, Dungannon, Ballymena and Thainstone.

The announcement has been made now to allow breeders sufficient time to join a scheme and undertake testing ahead of the first sale in May 2011. As at January 2010 28% of all pedigree Limousin calves registered came from CHeCS scheme herds, with 94% of bulls in the May 2010 Carlisle sale carrying a herd health declaration.

All in all, it sounds a good initiative which should help to give buyers additional confidence in the stock they buy, but there are a few herds which may well have to sharpen up their act in order to get stock into society sales.

Full Edinburgh Suffolk sale report

| 5 Comments | No TrackBacks

Apologies for this only just getting up here, I was tied up with the Sheep Event at Malvern on Monday and Tuesday.

Last week's sale of Suffolk ram lambs at Edinburgh failed to produce the sparky trade of previous years, with the average falling by more than £200 on the year and 30 fewer lambs finding new homes.

Traditionally the dearest sale for the breed, this year it only managed a top price of 20,000gns, some 6000gns short of the best achieved at the previous week's National sale at Shrewsbury, with a number of the best prices paid by flockmasters dispersing their flocks later this year.

Taking the top call was the reserve champion from the pre-sale show, a Cairness Carbon son out of a dam by Strathisla Sinatra, which was also dam of last year's champion from Shrewsbury. Bred by Steven and Louise Buckley, Derbyshire, this one was bought in a two way split by the event's judge Robbie Wilson and Charles and Kevin Proctor.

TS Edinburgh Lot 43.jpg Next best was an 18,000gns bid for the best from Mr Wilson's own Strathisla flock. This was a son of last year's Edinburgh champion Strathisla Sea Bird and is out of a dam by Glenho Gurka, which is herself full sister to 48,000gns sire Strathisla Dylan Thomas. Buying this one were Northern Irish breeders Alfred and Norman Robinson, Co Down.

Early Builth tup sale averages up on the year

With a lift in the average prices paid for virtually all breeds and a top bid of 2000gns, ram sellers hoped the trade at the first of the season's multi-breed rams sales held at Builth Wells this week was setting an upbeat trend for the coming autumn.

Buyers were certainly choosey, but the air of confidence underpinning the sheep sector encouraged generous bidding and good competition among bidders for the best rams.

Charollais breeders Charles and Valerie Marwood achieved the top price of 2000gns with a shearling ram from their Foulrice flock at York. The ram, by the Irish-bred sire Ballynoe House Isaac, was one of a large consignment from the Marwoods who brought 16 shearlings and three ram lambs to the sale.

"He's a ram that's got that something extra. Plenty of shape and a very good growth rate but a ram with that all important character and style that makes him stand out as a breeder's ram," said Charles Marwood.

The price brought the Foulrice average up to £740 compared with £650 last year.

"The benefit of the Hybu Cig Cymru Elite (HCC) performance ram scheme - which pays up to a maximum of £400 of the purchase price for a recorded ram - had undoubtedly been a factor in the higher prices achieved," added Mr Marwood.

Paying the top price was David Curran and his son Paul from Talgarth, Brecon.

"I've followed the Foulrice breeding lines and was very impressed with the ram's conformation, correctness and performance figures," said Mr Curran who bought him under the HCC scheme.

Geoff Biddulph of Macclesfield, Cheshire led the Suffolks at 1180gns with a ram lamb from his Pexhill flock.

The ram's twin had taken second prize for a single ram lamb at the National Suffolk sale last month and sold for 13,500gns.

Buyers of the 1180gns ram were the Hughes family from Felinfach, Lampeter.  "I had him marked in my catalogue as soon as I set eyes on him," said Mr Hughes.

Topping the Texels at 1150gns was a ram from Rob and Barbara Smith's Slapton flock in Northamptonshire.

The Smith family, who achieved the highest breed price of 1950gns last year, run 175 Texel ewes.

Beltex best was 950 guineas with a Berrichon tup reaching 400 guineas and Hampshire Downs up to 370 guineas.

There were 447 sheep sold compared with 441 in 2009. Gross takings were £214,475.79.

Leading averages: Charollais shearling (147) £595; Texel shearlings (214) £462; Suffolk lambs (65) £488; Beltex (16) £477
