All set for a bumper day of Texel selling at Lanark

| 2 Comments | No TrackBacks
After the strong trade for shearling ewes last night the wind looks set fair for the ram trade today and with talk of several breeders needing tups and willing to pay for them there could well be some big money spent later today.

Where the money will go is a good question, but without a doubt the champion and reserve will be among the top prices. The Sportsmans pen is also looking strong, as is the Glenside pen and there's been some chat about the winner of the novice class from Richard Wood, Kingledores.

Time will tell just how accurate this pre-sale chatter proves to be, but either way it looks set to be another high flying sale for the Texels at Lanark.

Selling gets under way at 9am with the shearling tups which are immediately followed by the ram lambs, so stay tuned later for all the latest news.....

Lanark Texel tup lamb preview

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks
As promised, albeit a little later than I'd hoped, here is a quick preview of this week's Lanark Texel sale. Of course this is only my opinion and I'm likely to be missing some lambs you've marked off or will have included something you won't be taking a shine to. So, feel free to add your own selections as a comment below.

First pick for me is Arkle South Pacific (lot 108), this is by last year's 40,000gns lamb Cambwell Rob Roy and out of a dam by Newton Field King Pin and has a strong index of 331.

Second up is Llangwm Stallone (lot 144). He's a full brother to last year's 32,000gns Llangwm Rocky, sold to Malcolm Reid, being by Kelso Picasso and out of a dam by Cowal Monarch of the Glen and has an index of 305.

Then I've marked the first from Procters Farms, Procters Spectacular (lot 147). This Haddo Ringleader son is out of a dam by Ettrick McCoist which was bought privately from the Annan flock and was the second prize aged ewe at this year's Royal Welsh. There are others in this pen of note too, including Procters Sovereign (lot 151).

After that it's just 10 lots to my next choice, Knock Saphir I (lot 161). He's a Cambwell Rob Roy son out of a dam by Anglezarke Krug and is maternal brother to the 24,000gns shearling ewe from last winter. He has an index of 344.

Following on I've put a mark beside Tullagh Saracen (lot 184), the first in from Messrs Currie. This is by Kelso Picasso and out of a Gruig Outlaw dam, a combination which should yield interesting results and was behind the Curries' 4500gns lamb at Ballymena last year.

One from Keith Jamieson catches my eye next, being Annan Supreme, a son of 9500gns Ballynahone Rambo out of a dam by Baltier King, which is full sister to 16,000gns Annan Lionheart.

Then it's on to one from John and Helen Clark, Garngour Spielberg (lot 209). This is by Teiglum Rembrandt and out of a dam by Teiglum Outlaw, he has an index of 319 and by the looks of it a strong female line behind him.

I've got one from John Mellin marked next in the shape of Hull House Scaramouche (lot 235). This one is by homebred tup Hull House Rothchild, a half share of which went to Baltier for 8000gns and which has left a number of show winners this year, and is out of a dam by Claybury Outlaw. He has an index of 230.

Another by the same sire, but this time from the Forsyth's is next on my list, being Baltier Super Sonic (lot 254). This is a maternal brother to Baltier Rock Solid.

A strong run of breeding is behind the next pick, Fordafourie Solid Gold from Sandy Lee (lot 272). Sired by 8000gns sire Sportsmans Rooney, he's out of a daughter of 20,000gns Millar's Outsmart.

Alistair Gault's pen is bound to attract some interest and I've gone for his first lamb as my pick, Forkins Supersire (lot 288). This is by 8000gns Baltier Nailer which has been breeding well for a number of flocks and is out of a Douganhill McFly daughter which is full sister to Forkins Nijinsky. He stook fourth at Balmoral. Another in this pen of note is Forkins Stringfellow (lot 290).

Full Bicester with Thame Sheep Fair report

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
As expected the first major breeding sheep sale of the season saw a big jump on the trade of a year ago, with last Friday's Thame with Bicester Sheep Fair  recording a rise in the Mule average of about £30/head.

According to auctioneer Rob Lea of Thame Farmers Mart, the trade was above expectations for the Mules with the entire Mule shearling entry levelling the day at £145.86. "We had some great runs of sheep forward and the buyers were prepared to pay a bit more for the quality sheep.

"With prime lamb and cull trade being so strong this year there has been a desire to reinvest in young sheep and this did impact a little on the older ewe trade which wouldn't have been as sharp as perhaps we thought it might be."

Strongest price of the sale was a £232 bid for a pen of pure Texels from R J and B E Kimber, Christian Malford, with the Texel sired shearlings averaging £146.22 for 1731 sold. In the Beltex sired shearlings the best price of £226 for a pen from Gore Farms, with 360 head averaging £148.08, up some £18 on last year.

And in the Charollais sired shearlings the best price was £180/head for ewes from G Forsyth, Leighton Buzzard, with these levelling at £140.

The biggest entry of the day was the North Country Mules, with 6686 shearling ewes sold to a top of £190 for G E Haynes, Winslow, these sold to Bramdon Richardson, Penshurst. This section saw the biggest rise in average, jumping by £31 on the 2010 sale.

In the Suffolk x Mule shearlings the best of the 6051 sold was a pen from Eddie Bulman, Thornborough, which made £202, with another pen from the same vendor making £200, this section averaged £146.14, a rise of £5 on 2010. "These could well look the best value on the year."

One lamb ewes were also in demand, with the Texel sired entry topping at £142 and averaging £139 for 86 forward, explains Mr Lea. "The Suffolk crosses sold to a top of £158 and averaged £135.43, with Mules selling to £151 and levelling at £142.83."

The strong trade continued in the ewe lambs and store lambs too, with an exceptional average of £93.53 achieved for the 560 sold. "Top here was a pen of Beltex x Texel crosses from B Blandford and Sons, Eastnor, which sold for £140, with another pen of the same making £126. The average would be up a good £20 on last year."

In the 1564 store lambs on offer a top of £75/head was backed up by an average of £63, up £12-13 on 2010.

Ram trade was strong too and the best call here was £865 for a Charollais shearling from Messrs Seahawes.com, Little Chesterton, with the shearling rams averaging £420. "Suffolk ram lambs sold to £555 for Merrick and Julie Pinny, with the ram lambs forward averaging £366. Older tups were a good trade too, selling to £650."

The sale also hosted the inaugural sale of Beltex for the Central Beltex Club and top call here in the females was a £472.50 bid for a ewe from Messrs Walker and Taylor, Witney, adds Mr Lea.

Mr Lea expects a much larger store lamb entry for the second sale in a month's time. "But I'd expect our shearling trade to be back a bit then as we get in to the second and third draw sheep. There are already several thousand sheep entered for next time and we hope for the near 100% clearance we saw this time, with only eight-10 pens unsold this time round." (Thame Farmers Mart).

Another mammoth Carlisle Beltex entry

| 3 Comments | No TrackBacks
With a number of big sales approaching I've spent a few hours going through various catalgoes recently and none has taken more reading than the catalogue for this week's Beltex sale at Carlisle.

Usually, with big sales I would of course go through and pick out some highlights, but with a sale of this size, it really is too big to pick any lots in particular as being the ones to watch.

A total entry of 1141 must make it the biggest single breed pedigree sheep sale of the year and knowing just where to start in an entry of that size isn't easy.

There are of course a few runs which are bound to attract attention and none more so than the two pens of ram lambs by last year' sale topper Dooley Napal. These are foward from Neale and Janet McQuiston and Jeff and Sue Wilkinson.

Lambs by 10,000gns Airyolland Nailer may sold draw some people to the Tercrosset pen of Tom and James Whiteford.

The shearling ewes on offer are likely to meet a ready trade too and with 302 on offer there's bound to be something for all tastes and all pockets.

Taking Stock will be reporting live from the sale on both Thursday and Friday, so keep an eye here to see what trade does....

Flying trade at Bicester and Thame Sheep Fair

Best price of the day was a £232/head bid for the first pen of sheep in the ring, a pen of pure Beltex ewes. "This really set the trend for the day and buyers dug deep to get the sheep they wanted, with six or eight pens at £200 or more."

30,000gns Haltcliffe heifer picked

| 4 Comments | No TrackBacks
Following last week's Haltcliffe heifer sale I've had confirmation from John Elliot of his pick from the 2009-born heifers offered as lot one which he paid 30,000gns for.

John's pick is Haltcliffe Emerald, she is a Sympa daughter out of top embryo donor Perle. Emerald is four weeks off calving to 34,000gns Cloughhead Ernie and has the highest Maternal Value index (25) and Beef Value Index (38) of all the Haltcliffe 2009 born females.

Explaining the choice John said although the decision should have been difficult, it was made easy due to the quality of Emerald. "We picked her as our favourite on looks before we saw that she had the highest beef value and maternal value in the Haltcliffe 2009 heifers.

"She is a real superstar with a fantastic proven pedigree to match. We are sure that Emerald will become a great foundation cow for the Roxburgh herd."
