An excellent show of quality young calves attracted a huge crowd of keen buyers, all hoping to purchase that exceptional animal that could win gold, says auctioneers McCartneys.

Last year's top price was smashed on more than one occasion, initially with a heifer from R & L Jones from Lower Argoed.

This was closely followed by 'Miss 2011' the supreme baby beef champion shown and bred by Mr Dylan Hughes. She made £4,500 being purchased by A & R Livestock (Mr A Bishop) from Pitfield Farm.

Then at the same money was the Supreme Champion, home bred Limousin heifer 'Cincer' from Christopher Owens, Glantre, which weighed 538 kg. She was  purchased by the judge Mr Alan Davies of Berriew.

CCM Auctions reported an "outstanding, high quality entry" of stock at the fourth annual Lingfield Christmas primestock show and sale held at Skipton Auction Mart on Sunday (27 November).

The sale saw a packed ringside with the region's butchers attending in large numbers to source local prime beef, lamb and pork ahead of the Christmas rush.

CCM chairman Anthony Hewetson, or Bell Busk, said the show and sale represented the "culmination and celebration of a fantastic fatstock year at Skipton, which has seen record numbers pass through the sales rings and record prices achieved".

The highlight of the day was a record price achieved by the supreme champion prime lambs - a trio of Beltex-cross lambs from James Garth & Son, Birk Knott Farm, Keasden, which were sold for a mart record price of £690 to Dunbia Foods, Preston.

The pigs were put forward by Yorkshire Dales farmer James Middleton, Amerdale House, Arncliffe.

BEEF

Beef champion winners, Clare and John have had a successul season, clinching a total of ten supreme championships, including the champion Charolais heifer at Countryside Live in October. As well as securing the supreme championship on Sunday, the pair also took the prize of best home-bred animal for their Limousin byullock, which sold for £1,609 (270.5p/kg) to James Dewhirst, who was buying on behalf of Stanforths Butchers, Skipton.

Other stock put forward by the pair achieved high prices, with a Limousin x heifer selling for £1,617 (269.5p/kg) to Red Rose butcher George Cropper, and a Continental x steer selling for £1,422 (249.5p/kg) to Kellham Farm Shop.

Meanwhile the beef reserve champion, a British Blue x bullock from father and son Matt and Ben Townsend, Barnside Hall Farm, Laneshawbridge, sold for £1,538 (287.5p/g) to Preston-based Bowland Foods' buyer Geoff Nutter, on behalf of Stephen Hallsworth Buthcers, Whalley. The trio sold to section judge Paul Bartholomew, Vivers Scotlamb, Annan. Mr Bartholomew also snapped up a pen from the Garth farming family for £148 a head, and one from Richard Caton, Stainforth, for £132 a head.

The reserve pig championship was awarded to a pen from John Midgley, Dean House Farm, Luddendenfoot, Halifax, selling to 120p/kg each to butcher judge Stephen Taylor, of W Taylor and Son, Bamber Bridge. He also bought a trio of native-bred pigs from Calderdale breeders P Crook and Mrs P Stewart.

Eyes were on popular favourite Poker Mon at yesterday's Welsh Winter Fair to see whether he would continue his run of successes in the baby beef classes. However, unexpectedly, he was nowhere to be seen in the final line up.

Having won the baby beef championship title at Countryside Live, AgriExpo, and the English and Scottish Winter Fairs he was placed second in his steer class to British Blue sired, Wally from D Huw Jones and was unplaced in the steer championship.

However, he later sold to the day's Beltex judge, Andrew Bishop, Worcester, for £2,800 to continue on the show circuit next year, but not before being shown at Smithfield this weekend by the Alfords, from Foxhill Farm, Cullompton, who originally purchased the beast for £3,000 at the Thainstone Spectacular.

Mr Bishop also purchased the Alford's heifer calf, Poker Doll privately for an undisclosed sum. This one had won her heifer class on the day and was also sold with the agreement she will be shown by the Alfords at Smithfield. Born in March 2011, she is by a British Blue and out of a Limousin x British Blue.

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

There was a strong demand for Suffolk females with prices soaring to a top of 5,200 Euros at the 14th annual production sale from the noted Baileys flock.

Buyers travelled from throughout Ireland and the UK to the County Meath farm of Tom Bailey.

The sale leader was a January 2010 born gimmer by the flock's jointly owned stock ram Cairness Kanine, and bred from a ewe by the 26,000gns Glenisla Syndey - reserve champion at Edinburgh in 2000. This much sought-after gimmer attracted a tussle of bids from the packed salering, with the successful bidder being David Duncan from Crumlin in County Antrim. This outstanding gimmer is in-lamb to the breed's 2010 Sire of the Year Cairness Liam, which has produced sons to a top of 90,000gns.

Next best at 3,500 Euros was a Cairness New Approach daughter bred from a ewe by the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi. This gimmer is bred from the same dam as the noted 8,000gns Baileys BMW - supreme champion at the Royal Highland and Royal Welsh shows last year. Carrying in-lamb to Cairness Kanine, she was snapped up by Patrick Grant from Kilcoo near Newry, County Down.

Cairness New Approach was also behind the breeding of a gimmer which caught the eye of Francis Mangan, Cappoquinn, County Waterford, at 3,000 Euros. This one was bred from a ewe by the 45,000gns Boreland Buddah. She is in-lamb to Rhaeadr Rossi - the 2006 Edinburgh and Royal Highland Show champion.

Also selling at 3,000 Euros was a Cairness Kanine daughter bred from a Perrinpit ewe by Davishill Dambuster. She was AI'd to Cairness Liam and sold to Geoffrey Douglas from Limavady, County Londonderry.

Ewes from the Baileys consignment sold to a top of 1,800 Euros, realised by a January 2009 born Cairness Almighty the Second daughter. She was bred from a Strathisla ewe by Strathisla Kingsway, and is in-lamb to the 70,000gns Rhaeadr Rossi. Buyer was English breeder C J Holmes from Rookery Farm, Broadway, Worcestershire.

The pig ring was dominated by Andrew Davies of Andrew T Davies and Son, Trial Mawr, Llanon, Aberystwyth. He secured both the pairs and individual championship with his homebred gilts.

Taking the pairs title were two Welsh litter mates out of Milday Tessa and by Tralmawr Emperor. It was the first show outing for the pigs which weighed in at 91kg.

Judge Arwyn Morgans of Morgans Family Butchers Builth and Brecon said: "They are very smart, long, well shaped and ideal for the butcher. They're as matched as you can ever get."

In facts Mr Morgans likes what he saw so much that he purchased the pair after the show. One of the pair also walked away with the title of supreme individual pig.

23112011 RWWF Beef Champ web.jpgIt was a ladies day in the overall beef championship ring. Judge Alan Davies from Butchers' Shop, Welshpool, picked the champion heifer for his top prize, but then called the reserve champion heifer into the ring to make his decision on reserve. In the end, the reserve heifer pipped the champion steer to the post.

The winning ticket went to the Limousin heifer (85) from Christopher Owens, who had previously seen success in the young handlers ring.

Mr Davies said: "The champion heifer was full of meat with a good top line. She was deep in the loin and showy with it."

Speaking about his preference for the fairer sex, Mr Davies said he liked heifers and "preferred them in the shop." He said overall the standard of entry had been good, but the heifers had been better than the bullocks on the day.

This one was bred by Michael Owens and is out of a Limousin cross and by a Derosa Limousin bull by Sarkley Pepsi. She comes from having previously won baby beef champion at Newark in May and been placed second in her class at The Royal Welsh Show. She'll be reluctantly put up for sale at the Fair weighing 538kg.

23112011 RWWF Beef Res Champ web.jpgThe reserve was another Limousin sired animal (34), this time from Dylan and Yvonne Hughes who also won Baby beef champion earlier in the day. November 2010 born Red Hot was bred by Brian Griffiths, Welshpool, and was bought at the Second Show Potential at Ruthin in April for £910. This one weighed 564kg on the day.

She was reserve at the Anglesey Winter Fair and third in her class at AgriExpo. This one will be kept for breeding and is one of 15 show potential cows kept by the couple.

John and daughter Joanna, secured the top spot with their pair of Beltex lambs (586) - winners of the continental championship section. They weighed 99.5kg and were both out of a Beltex x ewe and by Woods of Kingledores. One of the pair had won the singles class for the Beltex breed at Countryside Live. They will be sold later in the day.

In reserve was their pair of butchers' lambs (473). Again, out of a Beltex x ewe, these weighed 89.5kg and will also be sold at the Fair.

23112011 RWWF Lamb Res Champ web.jpgJudge Wil Lloyd Williams said he was looking for a pair that matched on the feet and also on the hook. "The champion pair are a good matching pair that will kill out well."

He said the difficulty had come when picking the reserve spot and it had been a close call between the eventual reserve and the Southdown pairs. However in the end it was their size and killing out percent that tipped it in favour of the Beltex reserves.

Angus breeders battle it out for top spot

| 7 Comments | No TrackBacks

Two leading Aberdeenshire herds battled it out for the top honours at the 13th Black Beauty Bonanza show of Aberdeen-Angus calves and yearlings on Saturday at Thainstone Centre, Inverurie.

This year's show, organised by the North East Aberdeen-Angus Club with attracted a record entry of 128 cattle from 27 herds from as far north as Orkney competing for £3500 in prize money.

The judge, Angus Stovold, owner of the old-established Rosemead herd in Surrey and vice-president of the Aberdeen-Angus Cattle Society, praised the quality of the cattle throughout the show which he described as outstanding.

"The Black Beauty is recognised as the best Aberdeen-Angus calf show in the country and I was greatly impressed with the size, strength and fleshing of the cattle and the professional way they were presented," said Mr Stovold. "The show was a credit to the breed and to all the exhibitors."

After each picking up four first prize tickets in the 12 classes, the Deveron herd of Hamish and Margaret Sclater at Denhead of Dunlugas, Turriff, and the Auchincrieve herd of the McCombie family at Auchincrieve, Rothiemay, went head-to-head when it came to the heifer championships.

In the end, honours were evenly shared with the Sclater's winning the heifer calf title and the McCombie's walking away with the yearling heifer award. The Deveron herd trumped its championship success by taking reserve in both sections while Auchincrieve stood reserve to Scotia Homes chairman, Bill Bruce, Logie, Ellon, for the keenly contested bull calf championship.

Repeating her championship success at the Aberdeen-Angus calf show at the Royal Highland Winter Fair on Wednesday was the Sclater's heifer calf, Deveron Elize L348, an eight month old daughter of the home-bred Deveron Jackson Eric J283.

The sire was bull calf champion at the Black Beauty two years ago and the first Aberdeen-Angus to be sold at auction with a self replacing index (SRI) of over 60 when sold at Stirling in February for 5000gns. His daughter - one of only two calves sired by him in the Deveron herd - is being retained in the 60-strong herd and is destined for next year's Royal Highland Show.

Mr and Mrs Sclater also stood reserve for the heifer calf award with the 10 month old, Deveron Lady L339, and the reserve yearling heifer award with the 19 month old, Deveron Proud Imogen K320, a first prize winner as a calf last year. Both were sired by the high performance bull, Blackhaugh Easy Papa G733.

Topping the yearling heifer class was an exceptionally well-grown 20 month old heifer, Auchincrieve Jessie Erica K303, shown by Charles McCombie and his two sons, Charles and Ben. The heifer was first in her class at Banchory Show during the summer and is a daughter of the 7000gns Perth sale purchase, Tonley Esquire F400, bred by Sellars Agriculture managing director, Neil Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford.

The McCombie's reserve bull calf champion was the January-born Auchincrieve Emmerson L364, an AI son of Blelack Prince Consort A286, formerly a herd sire in the Glenbervie and Rosemount herds.

This calf was pipped at the post for the top award by Mr Bruce's seven month old, Logie Politician L137, a much admired son of Blelack Lord Hildago H972, supreme champion at the Stirling sale in February, 2010, when purchased for the Logie herd for the top price of 25,000gns.

The Logie champion was paraded by stockman, Andrew Reid, who also showed the reserve yearling bull champion, the 20 month old Logie Red Leftback K932, a red son of Netherton Flyhalf G430.

Winner of the yearling bull championship was the massive 19 month old Blelack Equity K452, by the 10,000gns Oakchurch Dominator G035, from Neil and Graeme Massie, Blelack, Dinnet, Aboyne.

Both the champion and reserve will be heading for the spring bull sales at Stirling in February.

Highoaks dispersal tops 4,700gns

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Pedigree dairy day at Borderway on Wednesday was celebrated with a wonderful line up top quality heifers for sale. First through the ring came the best show of Holstein milkers seen for a long time at the Border and Lakeland club event.

It must have been a hard job for the skilled judge Stewart Mitchell of 'Grougar Holsteins' to make his choices.

Exactly half the entries of fresh heifers made over £2000 to a top of 3400gns, this bid by Mr Wallace of 78 Printshop Road, Northern Ireland, came from the 26 month old Boclair Shottle Elegance 2 ET. She boasted the best pedigree in the catalogue being out of the homebred Durham Elegance with a grand dam who was full sister to the world famous All-American cow Budjon-JK Linjet Eileen PI ET EX96. Well grown and oozing style she came second in the show to a very smart Buckeye daughter from the Wilsons of 'Evening Hill' that won overall champion and made 2350gns.

The reserve champion Hillhead Acrobat Clementina was one of several smart heifers from the Fleming family of Kirkpatrick Fleming, and made 2500gns.

The second highest price of the club sale was like the top price, sporting a very classy pedigree. At 2850gns this Roylane Jordan daughter is from the famous Copywood Out Sara family. She now joins one of Cumbria's finest herds belonging to the Sandersons at Lanercost.

Highoaks dispersal

Following the Border and Lakeland sale came the final sale to disperse the highly regarded 'Highoaks' Herd of Edward, Linda and Steven Wilson.

This comprised all the most recently calved heifers (plus a handful of cows), their baby heifer calves, all the in calf heifers and few spring born maidens.

It would be impossible to overstate the consistent quality of this stock, and the countless numbers of compliments paid to the breeders bore this out. Amongst the sound, solid pedigrees were some gems from famous cow families.

The top price of 4,700gns secured for an undisclosed Borders breeder, a Comestar Lheros daughter of EX91 Goldwyn cow from Marqi family, This fortnight calved heifer will surely become the 14th successive VG or EX when the classifier comes. Her heifer calf by the stock bull, Colvend Jazzbolt, made 1300gns to Stephen Moar of Coilsmore Farm.

The second top price, 4,000gns, was paid by Messrs Armstrong of Wolfa, for Highoaks Talent Kimo 3 ET. Bred off 8 successive VG and EX cows she sold 3 weeks fresh and will now grace this great redeveloping herd at Great Salkeld.

A feature of the Highoaks sale was the demand for the heifer calves, and the great trade was not dependant solely on loyal support of the highly respected herd. Conscious of well bred stylish, expertly farmed dairy cattle buyers were quite simply spoilt for choice and they indulged. Resulting in a wonderful trade for wonderful stock.

Dalesend dispersal draws bumper crowd

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

By Jeremy Hunt

Messrs Ropner's famous Dalesend Holstein herd was dispersed in front of massive crowd at Newton-le-Willows, near Leyburn, north Yorkshire. Over 100 buyers were recorded spanning 26 different counties from all over the UK. The Dalesend herd has been established for 60 years and has remained a major force in UK Holstein breeding.

Of the 300 lots there were 27 animals that made 3,000 guineas or more, but the top call came late in the day when 6,200gns was paid for a fabulous red calf by Fradon Jet Red, bred from the same family as Simon Davies' exciting show cow of the same name. She was snapped up by Albert Innes-Smith from Ponteland for his Movistar herd. Four telephone bidders provided a flurry of bidding, but as always there was only one winner!

Several cattle head for Wales as several discerning Welsh breeders bid keenly - sometimes against themselves! Among these was Peter Jones of the heavy milking Parcgwyn herd in Monmouthshire, who purchased seven cattle including the top priced cow Dalesend Talent echo EX-91 for 4,600gns.She was the only animal catalogued with a genomic test. Her GTPI was 1,824 but her 91 points and 50 litres a day were major factors in her appeal to buyers. Her Mr Sam calf at foot made 2,100gns to D.H Ryder of the Rypark herd near Otley.

Young stock were a flying trade with 52 heifer calves averaging £1,268 and selling to a top of 2,800 guineas for a Talent daughter from the famous Maude family. Tony Hack of the Santamaria herd in West Wales was the successful telephone bidder. Her dam travels to North Wales to join Messrs Jones' Puerto herd at 3,000gns.

An impressive group of 35 in-calf heifers averaged over £2,000 with a top price in the section of 3,200gns. This was for another Rosina, named Rosanna by Comestar Outside. She was carrying an embryo by Palermo out of Cogent Manat Scant EX-90 and was secured by Metcalfe Farms from Leyburn for their Washfold herd.

Maiden heifers sold well with Dalesend Drake Rena making  4,000 guineas to join Peter Miles and family's Littlebridge herd near Northallerton.

Tribute was made to Farms Manager Bernard Liddle, the immediate past President of Holstein UK, who with his family and expert team at Newton Grange had put a large dispersal sale together in great style in just six weeks.

Averages: 152 cows £2566; 35 served heifers £2082 and 62 maiden heifers £1518. (Norton and Brooksbank with Harrison and Hetherington).

In the championship, three different dairy farmers sharing the name Jennings secured honours.  The championship went to a newly calven heifer from Andrew Jennings, Fountatins, Ripon.

Mr Jennings, who trades as Jennings Farmers, took the title with his Holstein Friesian heifer (pictured below) that had calved 24 days before the show, giving a daily milk yield of 41 litres.  This one is by Gillette Final Cut, out of a dam bought at Skipton two years earlier.  She sold for £2,080 to Ian Dodson, of Soyland, Sowerby Bridge.

Limousin heifer reigns supreme at Royal Highland Winter Fair

A limousin heifer put forward by the showing syndicate Messrs Hyslop & Richardson, Balluskie Farm, Ayrshire, was crowned beef champion at this year's Royal Highland Winter Show in Edinburgh.

23112011 RHW Beef Champ.jpgBought in Carlisle in March this year for 2,700gns, Mistique is by Limousin bull Brontemoor Andover and out of a Limousin cross cow.  This one weighs in at 540kgs and was shown today by 18-year-old Jennifer Hyslop, and today's success follows on from winning the Limousin National Show in Carlisle in July.

Taking reserve beef champion, and continuing with their success on the winter showing circuit, was a Limousin x steer from Michael, Melanie and Charlotte Alford, Foxhill Farm, Devon.

Weighing in at 550kg, I'm Your Man is by a Limousin bull and out of a Limousin x cow.  He was bought privately from the Blanfords of Worcester, and today's success follows on from being crowned reserve champion steer at Countryside Live, Harrogate.

Judge Wendy Hunter, Spott Cottage, Angus, said:  "They are both outstanding animals, but I chose the champion because her lines were really good and she was slightly lengthier and a fraction more modern. It really came down to fine points."

Beltex pair scoop championship at Royal Highland Winter Fair

A pair of two pedigree Beltex lambs from Mr Andrew Bishop, Epitfield Farm, Gloucestershire, scooped the sheep championship at this year's Royal Highland Winter Fair.

23112011 RHW Sheep Champ.jpgThe pair weighed in at 103kg and are by the farm's home tup Luggsmill Dylan.  Coming to the Edinburgh show for the first time ever, Mr Bishop said it had been his ambition to come and win in Scotland, having won championships at other shows south of the border in the past.

Judge Joanne Hall, Inglewood Edge, Dalston, Cumbria, a regular on the showing circuit, said of the winning pair:  "I noticed them from the first time they cam out in their class, and they were a very good, even pair.  Every where I touched them was meat, and they stood out to me right from the start."

Taking reserve sheep champion at the show was a pair of light Beltex ewe lambs from Mr Andrew Morton, Lochend Farm, Denny, Stirlingshire.  These two weighed in at 85kg and are by Beachy Norman, who was bought by Mr Morton for 3,200gns.  Mr Morton won the championship at last year's show.

An eight-month-old heifer from Mr Hamish Sclater, Denhead, Turriff, secured the championship at the Aberdeen Angus calf show at this year's Royal Highland Winter Fair in Edinburgh.

23112011 RHW Angus Beef Champ.jpgDeveron Elize was homebred by the Sclaters and is one of only two progeny by Deveron Jackson Eric - a bull which sold for 5,000gns at this year's Perth Bull Sales in February.  She is out of Deveron Elize (H241) and today's success follows on from coming first in her class at the National Winter Show in Carlisle.

Mr Sclater, who keeps 60 cows, including 12 cross cows for embryo work, said he plans to take her on to Black Beauty Bonanza this weekend and the Royal Highland Show next year. This one is by the same Elize family that won the female championship at this show in 2008.

Judge Mrs Kay Adam, Newhouse of Glamis, Angus, said:  "I just thought she was very stylish and if I was to take an animal home to breed that was the one.  She is pretty perfect in every way, and oozing with breed character."

Taking reserve was a seven-month-old heifer from Messrs W & D McLaren, Netherton Farm, Perthshire.  Netherton Blackbird is a product of the McLaren's embryo programme and today's win follows on from taking junior female champion at the Stars of the Future show in Forfar.

Mr Willian McLaren said:  "Her dam (Netherton Blackbird (D309)) got sold to the Savills herd, and her grand-dam sold for 12,000gns."

He plans to keep her as a show heifer, taking her to next year's shows, before entering her into the farm's embryo programme.

Ludlow Market sees strong trade

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Ludlow Market saw the largest entry of TB restricted store cattle for some time last Friday.

There was a good level of demand considering the quality of the cattle on offer, but also some very nice sorts forward but also some extreme dairy types., reports auctioneers McCartneys.

A strong trade across all live and carcase classes for beef, lamb and pork has seen a significant increase in returns to exhibitors at this weekend's English Winter Fair livestock showcase, Stafford.

Auctioneers Bagshaws report returns to producers were significantly better for all three species from the showring than the current strong trade for beef and lamb in livestock markets and direct sales.

In the live cattle championship Phil & Sharon Sellers' Zintec-sponsored Supreme Champion Miss Scarlet, a 575kg liveweight October 2010-born Limousin x Limousin, made £4150 (£7.22/kg liveweight) to Lee Machin of Derbyshire-based Manifold Valley Meats.

Andrew Bishop's Reserve Supreme Champion Black Beauty, a 565kg liveweight August 2010-born Limousin x Limousin/BritishBlue, made £2720 (£4.81/kg liveweight) to Nottingham-based C Bowring.

Baby beef cattle topped at £3000 (£8.70/kg liveweight) paid for Lawson & Wilkinson's Limousin X April 2011-born heifer named Lulu which was purchased by fellow exhibitor G R Fountaine.

A total of 71 cattle were forwarded achieving an average of £3.17/kg liveweight, reports Bagshaws' Malcolm Gale. "It was a very good trade. | No Comments | No TrackBacks

Black and white heifers reached a ceiling of 3,300gns at Holstein NI's November show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Moira top price 3,300gns.jpgFollowing a steady trade which resulted in an 87% clearance, Taaffe Auctions reported that 20 heifers sold to average 1,942gns a head. "Milky heifers were in demand, and with animals ranging in price from 1,280gns to a top of 3,300gns we had something to suit everyone," stressed auctioneer Michael Taaffe.

The sale leader was Relough Talent Danna 5 brought out by Ronald McLean, and sons Malcolm and Barry, from Donaghmore near Dungannon, County Tyrone. Earlier in the day she caught the eye of pre-sale judge, John McCormick, Bangor, to secure the reserve championship award.

Bred from seven generations of VG and Ex dams from the Danna family, this heifer is a daughter of the Maughlin Storm son, Ladino Park Talent ET. Her dam was Relough Derby Danna ET (VG) which gave over 10,300 litres at 4.14%BF and 3.05%P in her fourth 305-day lactation. Two weeks calved and giving 30 litres daily she sold to a County Tyrone bidder.

Relough's noted Danna family was also behind the breeding of the day's overall champion, Ards Nokia F Danna consigned by Harry Patton, and sons Wilson and Wallace, from Newtownards, County Down. Sired by the Canyon Breeze Storm Atom son, Ards Nokia ET, she is bred from the VG87 Ards Freelance Danna which gave over 10,000 litres at 3.76%BF and 3.22%P in her third 305-day lactation. Four weeks calved and yielding 41 litres a day, this one sold for 2,100gns to a County Tyrone milk producer. The Relough herd sold six heifers at Moira to average 2,008gns each.

Judge John McCormick praised the vendors on the quality and presentation of the stock on offer at Moira. "The champion and reserve heifers complement one another very nicely. The champion is a well -balanced heifer with dairy strength and a fantastic udder. Her udder is high and wide at the rear and has good teat placement.

"The reserve champion is a sweet young heifer with a brilliant udder. She is full of promise for the future and should develop into a good dairy cow."

An unshown heifer from Aubrey Patterson's herd in Bangor came under the hammer at 2,550gns. Ballycrochan Wildman Ethel is a potential ninth generation VG/EX, and was sired by Ladys Manor Wildman. She is calved two weeks and is producing 33 litres a day.

Next best at 2,250gns was the unshown Kilvergan Damion Dorcas bred by Stephen Haffey, and sons Timothy, David and Aaron from Lurgan, County Armagh. Sired by the home-bred ERB Acres Damion son, Kilvergan Damion ET, she is out of Kilvergan Besne Dorcas VG88 which gave over 11,600 litres at 3.65%BF and 3.30%P in her second 305-day lactation. Mr Bown said he plans to take her onto the European showing circuit in spring 2012.  He currently keeps 82 cows, with nine red and whites, and the rest being black and whites.

The Ralston Family, from East Drumlemble, Campbeltown, have scooped the prestigious title of AgriScot Scottish Dairy Farm of the Year.

This is the first time the award, which is sponsored by World Wide Sires, has been awarded to an Ayrshire herd.

Ralstons.JPG

The family have been farming in Campbeltown since 1908, and father Willie, wife Catherine and sons Andrew and Murray are all involved in the business milking 200 Ayrshires, selling to First Milk for Mull of Kintyre Cheese.  They average at 7,900 litres.

Willie Ralston said of the win:  "We have a large number of seven, eight and nine calvers and our fertility has been consistent with a calving index of 392."

Judge Sue Cope, executive director of the Cattle Information Service, said:  "Not only do the Ralstons have a great herd of cows with fantastic management right from the new born calf to the mature herd but they have constantly planned and improved buildings for cow comfort and made new and wise use of the older buildings.

"They have also well thought out management plans in operation and for the future, continued detailed attention to sire selection, the use of sexed semen but never forgetting the key stockmanship skills.  I am sure every retail milk buyer would love to have this herd as a supplier."

Judge Ashley Fleming, Downpatrick, Co. Down, said:  "When you are in this you are looking for a heifer that comes to the top of her breed.

"This one had tremendous ring presence; she went around the ring really enjoying herself.  She has a tremendous, long body and moves exceptionally well with really good legs and feet."

She was sired by Ri-Val-Re 2338 Niagra and out of a VG-87 2yr Baxter granddaughter of the famous Windy-Knoll-View Promis (Ex-95). Beef Shorthorns get boost in trade

Trade was for Beef Shorthorns was undoubtedly boosted by enhanced confidence in the breed, coupled with the current incentive offered by the Morrisons premium for Beef Shorthorn-sired steers at the second annual show and sale of pedigree beef breeding cattle on behalf of the North of England Beef Shorthorn Club at Skipton Auction Mart.

Leading trade was the second prize 21-month-old bull, Shawhill Donald, from Scottish breeders Thomson, Roddick and Laurie and represented at Skipton by father and son, John and Mathew Thomson. This one by Glenisla Zetor sold at 4,100gns (£4,305).

The first calf of the home-bred Tessa X505 of Upsall and herself scanned in calf to the Broughton Park Thunder son, Dingo of Upsall, was bought by North Craven beef and sheep farmers Stuart and Gail Currie, of Beautry Farm, Rathmell.

The Curries also purchased the top price female at Skipton's 2010 fixture, their first-ever Shorthorn acquistion for a new starter herd. Of their latest acquisition, Mr Currie said: "She has a lot of style. If she does as well as the one we bought here last year, we will be more than happy."

The Curries, who run the Northern Equine Therapy Centre at Rathmell, also paid 2,600gns (£2,730) for another Turton maiden heifer, the 15-month-old Broughton Park Thunder daughter Tessa X721 of Upsall. The quality duo supplement the Curries' current holding of four Shorthorn cows and calves.

Charolais record of 12,000gns at Welshpool

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

It was smiles all round at the British Charolais Cattle Society's show and sale at Welshpool where a new centre record of 12,000gns was paid for a bull from Kevin Thomas's Moelfre herd.

The average of £3744 for the 70 bulls sold was also a record for this venue on a day that saw a storming trade for Charolais bulls and a strong demand from suckler calf producers prepared to go the extra yard for top-notch sires.

Speaking after the sale, BCCS chief executive David Benson said buyers were clearly responding to the solid trade for suckled calves this autumn.

"We're seeing resurgence in demand for Charolais bulls and there were plenty of new buyers at the ringside. The market was chokka-block with people - the biggest crowd we've ever seen at this sale."

Top call came for Moelfre Fabulous TI +57, SRI +43. This 21-month-old bull is by the 8,500gns Newhouse Chicago and out of a homebred dam from Kevin Thomas's herd at Capel Iwan, Newcastle Emlyn. Fabulous stood reserve breed champion at the 2011 Royal Welsh Show but at Welshpool he took the supreme ticket awarded by judge Alasdair Houston of the Gretnahouse herd.

Mr Thomas also sold two more sons of the 8,000gns Inverlochy Verne. First to go at 5,800gns was Moelfre Feisty TI +43, SRI +38, a 20-month-old out of a homebred dam going back to Mowbraypark Paramount. The buyer was Greystoke Castle Farms, Penrith.

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The strong trade of store cattle seems set to continue, as steers hit £1,235 and heifers reach £995 at a sale of more than 1,000 cattle at Frome Market last week (Friday 4 November).

Auctioneers Trevor Rowland and Lester Williams reported a "blistering trade" with many buyers present for the "quality entry".

Trade for suckler cows and calves saw strong demand, with many units achieving more than £1,000.

In particular, South Devon cows with two-month-old bull calves from Messrs White, Glastonbury, sold to £1,100, £1,150 and £1,320.  While the Hardwick Bros from Bridgwater had success with their South Devon cows and heifer calves selling to more than £1,000, their in-calf South Devon cows topping £980, and their Charolais x cow with her Angus heifer calf securing £1,040.

Trade of store bulls wasn't as strong, with the entry mainly dominated by Holstein Friesians.  Dairy-bred Herefords sold to £380 and Friesians to £240.

Trade picked up with the sale of young continentals - a run of 43 five to eight month old Charolais from SL & MV Mitchell, Dorchester saw steers top £750 and heifers hit £552. Other leading prices included Charolais steers from Jane Haw reaching £745 and heifers hitting £665.  While eight-month-old Blonde steers from Bramble Farms, Langport hit £850.

The auctioneers remarked:  "There was no let up in the high prices being achieved with most six to eight month old steers over £600 and the very best close to £800.  Heifers saw keen bidding, with many good shaped types over £500 and the top grades to £640 to £670."

Strong trade continued for forward continentals, with Charolais steers regularly reaching £1,000, with the top price of £1,235 going to 21-month-old steers from Steve Pinner, Andover.

The auctioneers said heifers met an "explosive trade with tremendous bidding throughout".  The top price on the day went to a Limousin from HRH Hansford, Sherborne, which achieved £955.

Despite a smaller entry of breeding ewes, an average of £67.35 was achieved, with a top price of £104 for ewes from Mr England.  Sales of breeding rams went slowly, and reached an average of £102, with a top price of £200 going to a shearling from Mr T Hasson.

Young Holstein bulls to 7,500gns at Wexham Cup sale

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Young Holstein bulls representing all the very best genetics that have brought so much success over the years to Mick and Jean Gould's Woodmarsh herd, accounted for the two highest bids of 7500gns and 5800gns at the Wexham Cup sale at Beeston Castle.

The Shropshire-based herd - which has an average yield just short of 13,000 litres - sold six bulls to average £4445 on a day that produced a flying trade and levelled the 53 bulls sold at just over £2500. Top call of 7500gns secured Woodmarsh Mastermind who comes from the herd's hugely successful Melody family. Mastermind is by Sicy Knowledge and out of the 8th lactation 17,000kg (305 days) Mtoto Melody 7th and was bought by Betholt Ltd. Stafford.

The champion bull on inspection, Woodmarsh Salvo, is also by Knowledge and out of Woodmarsh Outside Sallie 10th. He made 5800gns to E and J Yarwood & Sons at Medhurst Green, Congleton.

The Wexham Cup, where a bull's inspection points are added to points gained for pedigree, index and dam's production, was won by Holmland Varon ET, a son of Long-Langs Oman Oman from Steve Bell of Penrith and Paul Findley of Wrexham. Buyer was F Jackson and Son, Oswestry at 3200gns. There were 13 bulls over 3000gns.

The trade clearly demonstrated the growing trend for natural service as a back-up to A1. Commented Mick Gould: "Trade was very strong and it's largely being driven by the swing back to running bulls in dairy herds alongside using AI. As herds get bigger it's often easier to serve groups of heifers with a bull."

The ringside was packed to capacity for the sale - the biggest turnout seen at this fixture for many years. Trade quickly gathered momentum with bidding at times being "fast and furious" according to auctioneer Clive Norbury. There were 13 bulls selling for 3000gns or more and many intending purchasers going home empty handed.

Richard and Ruth Pilkington of Aintree Holsteins Ltd. at Hope near Wrexham also had a good day claiming two of the leading bids. Their top seller - the third highest price of the day - was Aintree Notch, a son of Schillview Oman Gerard born last November and bred from four generations of VG/Ex dams from their renowned Nugget family. He sold for 4500gns to W and J Davies of Aubergine, Denbighshire.

They also sold Aintree Ninja, a son of Macomb Oman Bogart - also from the Nugget family - for 4000gns to R H Lewis and Son of Crickheath, Oswestry.

Matt Fisher of Eamont Bridge, Penrith entered just the one bull for the sale and achieved one of the top prices selling his Newtonmoss Edward - by Shottle from the Elegance family - for 3800gns. Buyers were R and J Roberts, Whitford, Holywell, Flintshire.

Averages: 53 Bulls £2516.52. (Wright Manley)

Dairy Shorthorns to 3,200gns at Chelford

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Demand for red and white genetics is buzzing so it was no surprise to see record averages achieved at this week's annual autumn show and sale of Dairy Shorthorns at Chelford, Cheshire. The sale produced a record average of £2247 for freshly calved heifers and a top call of 3200gns.

Breed stalwarts the Hayward family from Newark, Nottinghamshire once again enjoyed a tremendous trade for cattle from their noted Hooton herd and it was the stylish roan heifer Hooton Lily Fair 238th, freshly calved a week, that topped the day at 3200gns. She goes back through a family of some of the greatest Dairy Shorn show winners of all time - among them Hooton Lily Fair 113th.

Judge Marshall Crank gave Lily Fair 238th the championship on Monday and claimed her for his herd at Chester.

Admirers of Marleycote Barrington Iris 15th - this year's Great Yorkshire Show reserve inter-breed champion from Northumberland-based David Baynes and family - turned out at Chelford to take a tilt at this VG 88 daughter of Nejay Royalty but were outclassed by determined bidding on the phone from Jonathan Fisher, Penrith, Cumbria who secured her at 3000gns.

Averages: Cows in-milk £1,820.43; heifers in-milk £2,247.00; in-calf heifers £1,556.00; maiden heifers and calves £755. (Frank Marshall).

The Northern Ireland Aberdeen-Angus Club's 7th annual calf show, held at Dungannon Farmers Mart, was hailed a huge success, attracting upwards of 100 entries from both novice and experienced breeders.

Judging was in the capable hands of the husband and wife team Owen and Angela Armstrong McFadden who run the noted 50-cow Crerogue herd based at Navan in County Meath.

Scooping the yearling heifer championship was the much-admired Coolermoney Rachel K051 bred and exhibited by the father and son team of Adrian and Graeme Parke, who established their eight cow herd at Strabane in 1994. Born in April 2010, she is by Nakkeg Nord and notched up five reserve supreme championship titles this year. She was also crowned heifer calf champion at last year's calf show.

yearling heifer champ.jpgRunner-up in the yearling heifer line-up was the May 2010-born Knockadrinan Bell K496 shown by Sam and Sarah Matchett from Portadown. Bred by Tom Reynolds, Bornacoola, County Leitrim and sired by Knockadrinan Precise G398, she was the reserve heifer calf champion at last year's event.

The Matchett brother and sister duo claimed a host of accolades at the one-day event, including the supreme and reserve titles in the bull calf championship, and the reserve commercial championship.

Their bull calf champion was the home-bred Birches Prince L967. This six-month-old entry is sired by the herd's stock bull, Cloghogue Evolution - junior champion at Balmoral in 2009 and Ulster champion in 2010. Evolution was calf champion at Mullingar Show in 2008 and was purchased privately by the Matchett family - Nigel, Gail, Sarah and Sam, who run a herd of 10 breeding females.

Cloghogue Evolution also sired the reserve bull calf champion Birches Littleman L923. Born in March 2011, he won numerous first prizes at the provincial summer shows and was recipient of the best bull award at Enniskillen Show in August. His dam is the Lissard Mark daughter, Drumcrow Lima G266 - founder of the Birches herd in 2007.

The yearling bull championship was awarded to the March 2010-born Home Farm Ebony Ahead K894, stock bull in Joel Richardson's pedigree and commercial herd based at Portadown. Sired by Rawburn Rommel E423 and bred by Fintan Keown, Belleek, this bull was champion at the National Bull Testing Centre at Tully in April when he purchased for 5100 Euro. He was another graduate from last year's NI Aberdeen-Angus Club calf show, having won the reserve bull calf championship.

bull yearling champ.jpgThe reserve yearling bull champion was Eden Vale Valentino, a March 2010-born entry consigned by Mike Frazer of the Bruces Hill Cattle Co, Templepatrick . Valentino was sired by the herd's stock bull, Clougher Enoch G524 - reserve male champion at Dungannon in April 2009 when he was purchased for an NI record of 7600gns. His dam, Skerrybrooke Vine G497 is one of 45 breeding females in the herd which was established in 2009.

Charolais met a consistently strong demand selling to 7,600gns at the Northern Ireland Charolais Club's official autumn show and sale at Dungannon last Friday (4 November). The packed ringside set what is believed to be a record average for this autumn sale with 42 bulls averaging £3,681.

"Trade met an insatiable demand for Charolais bulls from commercial suckler men following sales of Charolais cross calves that have exceeded all expectations," says British Charolais Society chairman Martin Donaghy.

Fifteen month old Kinnegohill Frankie, a Doonally Nicefor son, led the day's trade selling for 7,600gns for his breeder N Weir, Loughgall, County Armagh to R Scott, Omagh, County Tyrone.

Next came Altnaveigh Ferdinand, a 15 month old by Moncur General and out of a Doonally New sired dam, from S and R Thompson, Newry, County Down selling for 6,800gns to the County Tyrone based Wesley Cousins, Omagh. Messrs Erskine also made 6,000gns for the reserve female champion Dartonhall Emma, a maiden heifer sired by the French bull Major, with a bid from C Richardson, Annaghmore, County Armagh.

Eid al Adha festival boosts lamb trade

Stephen Kirkup, who procures stock for abattoirs, reported a strong sale of lambs last week in line with the religious festival Eid al Adha.

For the week ending 4 November 2011, a total of 5,478 prime lambs, 1,172 store and breeding sheep, and 80 cattle.

The best averages for lambs were £81, with standard lambs selling for £3.70-£3.90/kg to 22kg, and £3.80/£3.85/kg on the grid to 21kg.

Organic lamb prices were £3.85/£3.90/kg on grid with smalls up to 13.5kg at £4.00/kg.

Looking ahead to trade for the coming weeks, he said:  "There is a strong home trade demand for cutting lambs at the moment and processors are looking for small lambs for export leading up to Christmas.

"Processors are sourcing small amounts of organic lambs but there is no great demand for these at the present time.  With the favourable exchange rate and a good demand for lambs from UK processors, the lamb trade should become stronger towards Christmas.

"There is definitely a great deal of confidence in the lamb market from farmers who are prepared to invest in store lambs at the moment."

Last Monday's Irish Limousin Cattle Society Premier Bull sale at Roscrea mart saw the average price of bulls sold at €3,819 up €400 on the 2010 sale. The capacity crowd witnessed a continual run of strong prices culminating in a top price of €16,000. Prices ranged from €1,800 to €16,000 with eight bulls being exported.

Breed secretary Paul Sykes commenting on the sale said: "Apart from the fact that we had such a good average with 21 animals selling in excess of €4,000 the most satisfying aspect of todays sale is our clearance rate of 93%. It had been quite evident in the presale show that customers were acknowledging the consistence of quality of the cattle entered and this carried through to the sale. Irish Limousin breeders have spent a lot of time and money using the best genetics available in the world and this has been rewarded today. Likewise Limousin cattle are commanding a premium at commercial markets throughout the country and farmers are becoming aware of this fact along with being conscious of their easy calving abilities"

Top price of the day went to the Junior Champion Newtown Freeman from the well-known Newtown Herd of Mr Stanley Richardson Newtowngore Co. Leitrim, having already stood Overall Male Champion at this year's National Limousin show in Tullamore there was no doubt that this animal was going to create plenty of interest in the sales ring. Freeman who is by the highly influential UK sire Wilodge Vantastic and Newtown Trixie who herself is by the renowned French sire Dauphin and came to the ring with a five star Suckler Beef Value of 117.

66oct4148.jpg Having won his class in the presale show he then went on to be tapped forward as Junior Male Champion by the judge Mr Ian Nimmo of the Nimmo herd North Lanarkshire, Scotland. When Freeman came to the sales ring he met a flurry of bids with customers from both at home and abroad anxious to acquire this powerful animal however when the bidding finished at €16,000 Freeman was heading to a new home in East Yorkshire where he will be joining the Elderberry herd of Messers E Blenkhorn, Goole East Yorkshire.

Speaking after the sale Mr Blenkhorn said: "We bought a bull here a number of years past incidentally at the same price which we were delighted with, we are really pleased with the quality of animals on offer and excited with our purchase today. Freeman has both style and conformation coupled with a great pedigree we expect him to do a great job in our herd".

The next highest price of the day at €8,000 went to Noel Kenny Roundwood, Co Wicklow for Tomriland Frankie ET, by another very sought after sire Objat and a French dam Voyelle. Frankie had a 5 star SBV of €127 and came to the ring displaying a muscle score of the 137. Once again bidding was brisk and prolonged but eventually Frankie was snapped up by Co Tipperary suckler farmer Keith Donovan.

75oct4713.jpgSelling at €7,400 was the Reserve Junior Champion Drummin Franz ET from Mr John McInerney, Bunratty Co Clare. Having stood Reserve Junior Male Champion at the Irish Limousin National show in Tullamore and by another influential sire Fieldson Alfy and Drummin Cliona the dam of the €10600 2010 Roscrea Junior Champion there was considerable interest again in this lot. Franz with a 5 star SBV of €148 was purchased by Co Kildare farmer John Culbert.

A flying trade for suckler breeding cattle lifted prices by almost £400 a head at this week's November Cattle Fair at Bentham Auction Mart near Lancaster where bidding reached £1,850 for a pure-bred in-calf Blonde heifer.

The 78 in-calf heifers - predominantly Limousin and British Blue crosses - averaged £1,250 compared with last year's level of £870. Auctioneer Russell Steer described the trade as "absolutely tremendous" on a day that demonstrated continued confidence among suckled calf producers.

"The strong cull cow trade is certainly helping buyers fund their herd replacements. With the best cast cows making nearly £1,200 - and plenty at around £1,000 - these cattle aren't costing a lot to replace," said Mr Steer.

The top call came for a pure-bred Blonde heifer from well known Yorkshire Dales stock breeder John Bradley from Litton. In-calf to the Blonde, she made £1850 to Mr Berry, Keighley, west Yorkshire. Another Blonde heifer from the same home made £1720.

Regular vendor Mrs Brenda Jones from nearby Malham once again produced a top quality batch of in-calf Belgian Blue x Friesian in-calf heifers to the satisfaction of her long-standing buyers.

"With finished cattle prices forecast to stay strong well into next year - and the effect it has had on the demand for stores and suckled calves this autumn - every sector of the beef job is very buoyant," said Russell Steer.

Averages: 78 in-calf sucklers £1250. (Richard Turner and Son).

Speaking of the sale Mr De Cogan said: "I was particularly taken with Karona at this year's National Show at Westmorland. He has a good calving ease figure, coupled with a Terminal Sire Index of +30 and a Self Replacing Index of +37. He is also a very correct bull with great locomotion, natural fleshing and fantastic breed character.

No fewer than 40 individuals purchased sheep at the Bakewell Store Lamb Sale. Buyers had come from as far as Devon, Norfolk, and Wales to compete for the 6,000+ lambs catalogued.

Trade was outstanding with a remarkable overall average of £66.60 and this bearing in mind that many producers were reaching the end of their lamb crop.

There were substantial numbers of smaller long term lambs and as so often is the case, the smaller they were, the dearer they appeared. (Bakewell)

An entry of 7,906 prime lambs and cast ewes at Bentham Auction Mart weekly sale was the largest since 2006 and sold to a complete clearance. All classes of lambs were in good demand ahead of the imminent Asian festival. Top price a head for lambs was £100 from R Hodgson and Son of High Peak, while Beltex lambs from Dan Towers of Wray secured top price a kg at 232p.

The Annual Prize Show of Mule Lambs was won by David Gardner of Brookhouse, whose pen of 10 went on to make £74 a head selling to Arthur Slack. (Bentham Auction Mart)

Sheep dogs to 4,000gns at Skipton

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Top notch dogs from Wales and Ireland were responsible for the three leading prices at the autumn sale of working sheep dogs at Skipton Auction Mart last Friday.

Welsh trialist Meirion Williams, of Llwyn Onn, Brooks, Welshpool in Powys, achieved top call of the day at 4,000 guineas (£4,200) - his best-ever price at Skipton - with his three-year-old black and white dog Barnie, a fully home-bred son of Pandy Rob, out of Fiz, whose breeding lines go back to fellow Welsh breeder Richard Millichap's 2003 reserve Supreme champion Ben.

CCM Working Dogs Meirion Williams Barnie pic.jpgPlaced in both nursery and open novice trials, Barnie had already accrued ten National points in the hands of Mr Williams. He is a little brother to two bitches from the same breeder and with the same parents that headed the prices at 3,900gns (£4,095) and 3,600gns (£3,780) respectively at Skipton's May, 2010, working dogs sale.

Barnie was said to be a reluctant sale in order to make room for some highly promising up-and-coming young dogs, also by Pandy Rob and Fiz, in the Williams training fold. "I was sorry to see him go," said Mr Williams, who over the years has notched up some 30 placings on the trials field. Barnie's new owner requested anonymity.

Northern Ireland's Seamus Gormley, of Kilcreen Sheep Dog Centre in Claudy, Co Derry, set the early pace when his 16-month-old black and white dog Dick sold for 3,500gns (£3,675) to a regular customer in South Wales.

CCM Working Dogs Seamus Gormley and Dick pic 1.jpgDick, newly broken by Mr Gormley, a noted sheep dog trainer and handler who has twice represented his country in the Supreme Trials, is by Glen, also bred in Northern Ireland by County Antrim's John Murphy, of Shanes Castle. Mr Gormley also owned Gale's father Jim, bought from fellow Welshman Jim Dyson.

With excellent potential as a trials dog, Dick's dam is Lin, now owned by County Antrim's Alec McClintock and bred in Scotland by David Shannon. "He is a tremendous dog in every way," said Mr Gormley.

The same vendor later transferred his interest to the ringside when paying 2,500gns (£2,625) for Barfield Glen, an 18-month-old from Roger Marsden, of Teesway, Darlington. His new acquisition is by Tanhill Taz, bred by seasoned English trialist Richard Hutchinson, from Littledale in Lancashire, out of Wendale Roz, herself a product of Wendale Star, bred in Wales by Aled Owen, the 2008 World Trials champion.

Also achieving 3,500gns was another well-known Welsh breeder and trialist Huw Francis, of Penllwyn Farm, Llanfyllin, Welshpool, Powys, with his 21-month-old tri-coloured dog Cammen Chip, by his own Moss, out of Cammen Queen, bred by near neighbour Hywel Watkins.

The sire is held in high regard by his breeder. "We have sold many good dogs by Moss," said Mr Francis, a regular vendor who has averaged well over 2,000gns with his Skipton-sold dogs, though Cammen Chip was his best-ever price at the venue when joining a buyer from the Midlands.

Kivells dispersed the entire crop of youngstock from the highly regarded Loford herd at Holsworthy Market, Devon on behalf of the Wade Family of South Yeo, Bideford.  A massive crowd of buyers travelled from as far as the South East, Wales and all over the west country to see this exceptional consignment of heifers go under the hammer which saw prices reach 6,900gns.

The Wade family have over the years invested heavily into well-known international cow families and this dispersal sale resulted in a mouth-watering catalogue of deep pedigrees, every animal sold with at least five generations of VG or EX dams.

Leading the trade was Loford Damion Rhonda a 15 month old heifer by Erbacres Damion and bred from 11 generations of VG/EX cows going back to Glenbridge Citation Roxy EX97. She sold to Sheikha Noora Bin Alkhalifa of Bahrain for her Sahara herd in Monmouthshire, Wales.

Next in the money was Loford Bolton Fifi a Sandy-Valley Bolton heifer bred from nine generations of VG/EX going back to the Plushanski Chief Faith EX94. She sold in calf and due in January to Picston Shottle for 3,000gns to Messrs S R Houlford and Partners of Barnstaple.

The Fifi's were certainly in demand with Loford Shottle Fifi 22 by Picston Shottle from the same family selling incalf and due the end of November to Gerrard for 2,800gns to Mr Laarveld of Winkleigh.

The only red and white in the sale was the first lot through the ring being Loford Rampage Meggie Red and this powerful heifer by Rampage Red was bred from 14 generations of VG and EX cows from the Meggie family and she sold incalf and due in December to Robert Page of  West Sussex for his Blanches herd.

Brightonhouse Suffolks dispersal attracts crowds

Suffolk sheep supporters were out in force at the dispersal of the Brightonhouse flock for Keighley, west Yorkshire breeders, G & A Fort. The auction mart car park at Skipton was filling up with trailers several hours before the sale which drew buyers from Morayshire in northern Scotland to Devon.

This flock impressed for its outlook and "meaty" conformation and it was the stock ram Tomcroft Titan - a son of Meikleson Impression - that realised the top price of 1,100gns. Bred by Tom Cox and bought as a lamb at the breed society's 2009 National Show and Sale, he stays in Yorkshire with Harrogate buyer R Earnshaw.

Females were a good trade selling to 1,050gns for a January-born ewe lamb by Titan and bought by Mrs Caroline Nelson for her Rosepark flock at Kelso.

Steady trade at Western Holstein club sale

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Certainly nothing to disappoint on price at an average of £1,804 for 61 milking heifers and a top call of 3,000gns, but there wasn't quite the same buzz about the ring at last Friday's Western Holstein Club show and sale at Beeston Castle in Cheshire.

Auctioneer Clive Norbury admits he doesn't know why trade wasn't as lively as we've seen in recent months, but buyers were rather more cautious about spending. A smart heifer from the Mallinson family's Carrhall herd at Armathwaite, Carlise - but consigned by the Easthams from Samlesbury near Preston - topped the day at 3,000gns after taking the championship. She heads for Anglesey to join Harry Evans' herd. (Wright Manley).
