ANGUS IN TOP GEAR FOR STIRLING

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

If you are heading to Stirling next week with the aim of buying an Aberdeen Angus bull you should waste no time in getting to grips with the entry - from the catalogue or on-line. This spring's sale presents a wealth of breeding and performance data that takes time to assess well ahead of sale day.

The catalogued entry of 235 bulls - including female gems from the Rawburn and Hurdcott drafts - presents an outstanding selection of bulls and females. And there's enough performance data to meet the most demanding number-crunching buyers.

The Rawburn ladies look set to set sparks flying. Of note are the powerful 2006-bred cow Rawburn Duchess Kent - whose 2011 bull calf achieved a Terminal Index of 51 - and Rawburn Lady Hispade who boasts some of the breed's best performance figures.

Some of the major players such as Haymount, Wedderlie, Fordel Cardona, Blelack, Netherton and The Moss have most stalls booked. The Massie's entry includes Blelack Kentucky Lad (Terminal sire index 39) whose sire, Netherallan Peter Pershore has seen his first 10 sons sold at auction average 11,000gns.

From the McLaren family's Netherton string comes Netherton Black Bobby (Terminal sire index +38) whose sire, The Moss Mr Eshton, was 2010  Royal Highland Show champion and cost 26,000gns.

For those looking for slice of some of the breed's top performance achievements the five grade one embryos offered by Bova Gen Ltd will take some beating. They are by Rawburn Enigma and out of Rawburn Ellen Erica and will be full siblings to Rawburn Emblem who achieved an actual 400-day weight of 872kg and the highest muscle area ever measured at Rawburn. Emblem sold for 30,000gns.

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Scottish Charolais breeder lands export deal to Mexico

lamerparkchampion12semenexport web.jpgScottish Charolais breeder Murray Lyle has landed an export deal to send a batch of semen from Lamerpark Champion to the Mexican Charolais Society, via UK Sire Services.

Champion is by Weybread Archie and out of the homebred Lamerpark Ripple; he has a TI of +33 and a SRI of +32.  He was bred by Dr D G White, Wheathampstead, Herefordshire, and has previously won overall Scottish National Charolais Show campion and Royal Highland Show junior interbreed champion.

The export deal comes about following a visit by the Mexican Charolais Society to the Perth Bull Sales in autumn last year, which also resulted in visits to various Charolais herds across the UK.

Commenting, Mr Lyle said:  "The delegation selected Champion for his frame and the growth that his genetics will offer to Mexican pedigree and commercial producers to enhance their already high performance Charolais.  They were also very impressed with his muscling and easy fleshing qualities."

STRONG TURNOUT FOR STIRLING LIMOUSINS

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Fashion and figures are on offer in plenty at next week's sale of Limousin bulls at Stirling.

A strong catalogue of 103 bulls by leading sires - combined with top-ranking performance figures - presents some interesting genetic packages for both pedigree and commercial buyers.

Progeny of many of the breed's big-money bulls such as Cloughhead Umpire (42,000gns), Wilodge Cerberus (50,000gns) and Wilodge Vantastic (42,000gns) are up for grabs with some of the highest EBV scoring sires being sons of the Vantastic son Goldies Comet (23,000gns).

David Baillie is no stranger to this fixture and his stalls have three Comet sons with some of the highest performance records at the sale - Calla Floyd (Lim+48), Calla Fergus (Lim+47) and Calla Finlay (Lim+40). But Stephanie Dick has chosen Stirling to sell the first bull from her Stephick herd. She looks likely to have plenty of interest in Stephick Flashi. By Vantastic and out of a Ronick Astique cow, Flashi stood third at the National Limousin Show and adds to his appeal with an EBV Lim+40.

Bruce Goldie brings an interesting string. Goldies Frank is by the big winning - and now very successful sire- Ampertaine Bravo (24,000gns) and out of the Lascard dam Goldies Treasure - who has already bred Goldies Andres at 11,000gns. Frank boasts a Beef Value of Lim+40. Goldies Forecast - also by Bravo and out of a Ramses cow - has attained Lim+46.

Black Limousin genetics are certainly no longer a "colour fad" and there are leading bloodlines from the USA on offer. While the Rawburn herd will no doubt have plenty to interest Limousin stalwarts in the future, John Elliot whets buyers' appetites this time with Elliot Black Firestarter, a black-coated bull (91% black genetics) boasting some of the USA's most sought after maternal genetics and sired by the intriguingly named Wulfs Shop Talk.

R M Adam and Son bring black genetics from their Newhouse herd including Newhouse Black Freelander - a Hudscales Bigboy son - with an impressive Beef Value of Lim+51 while Harry Emslie brings Emslies Black Fandango who is by Bailea BMW and has a Beef Value of Lim+37. (United Auctions)

BILSROW BEST AT 3800GNS

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Stanton (Holstein Sale 1 web.jpgLancashire breeders David and Sheila Tomlinson and son James brought out the most tempting lot for the keen crowd of buyers gathered at Beeston Castle market in Cheshire for the Western Holstein Club's show and sale and walked away with the day's top price of 3800gns.

Bred in their herd at Bilsborrow near Preston, the calved heifer Bilsrow Alexander Shower is by Golden-Oaks Alexander and out of Bilsrow Shottle Shower that gave 13,959kg and 12,392kg in two of her first three lactations. The family traces back to Glen Drummond Shower through the heavy milking six lactation cow Bilsrow SR Shower that did three notes well over 12,000kg in her six calvings.

Trade was brisk throughout the sale although the 70 catalogued entries reflected the tight supply of dairy stock.

More Shottle breeding came good for Crewe herd owner Terry Goldstraw who earned 3500gns for his only entry Kingold Shottle Promise - a calved heifer with a sire stack including Carol Prelude Mtoto, Igniter and Celsius.

Grange Gervaise 1 web.JPGA UK bred Limousin bull has been sold to French breeders and exported in what it widely believed to be the first time a bull of the breed has been sold back to France.

Homebred, 11 month old Grange Gervaise from George and Steven Smith and Family, Brookfield Farm, Daventry, sold him for an undisclosed sum to InterLim Service Genetique on behalf of three breeders; Earl Lasternas, Earl Geraud and Earl Bonnet.

The bull is by French sire Chaval, which the Smiths bought from Lanaud Bull Station in 2008. Gervaise is out of homebred cow, Grange Cascade and was sold weighing 660kg at 33 days old, meaning he had gained an impressive 1.86kg a day since birth.

The bull is believed to be currently with Earl Lasternas where semen will be taken from him before he is moved around the three herds. Lasternas is one of the top show people in France having had the champion bull at the French national Limousin show for two consecutive years.

Many cattle surpassed the £1,050 barrier and eight month old bullocks and heifers making £950 - £800.

An overall sale average of £892.36 was achieved with the top price of the day £1,220 for a strong Limousin heifer consigned by T S Willis.

We're at that time of year when it seems like the money finishers are giving for stores bears little relation to the current price of fat cattle.

And this year is no exception, although even those with cattle to sell - and who were quietly confident about the anticipated trade this month - have been taken aback by the strength of the demand.

At Chelford market in Cheshire on Monday almost 100 head of stores - everything from young stirks to over 20-monthers - levelled at around £700 with the top price of £1095 paid for a 20-month-old Charolais-cross steer. Good enough you might say but the tale of one vendor puts the job into perspective.

He had three Limousin-cross stirks to sell - weighing around 250kg - and before he went into the ring said if they made £500 apiece he'd be more than happy. When they reached £550 he was generously offering luck money, but he was wearing the broadest smile of all when he left the ring having seen the hammer fall at £630.

Chatting to auctioneer Jonathan Farrell of Frank Marshall's after the sale and he admitted stores were difficult to value in the current market - and were likely to get even more so.

"Stores are getting dearer at a faster rate than the fat cattle - and I can't see things changing in the months ahead," said Jonathan.

With the barren cow price doing little to encourage anything with a problem to be given a second chance and the fact that more stores were cashed-in for good money during the autumn, it's to be hoped Macdonalds can find enough beef this summer to stave off the energy gap of those hungry Olympians.

It's two out of two for North Yorkshire dairy farmers Raymond and Robert Johnson, after they secured their second Craven Dairy Auction championship of the year at Skipton Auction Mart's main January show.

The father and son duo, of Summerfield Farm, Felliscliffe, Harrogate, who also landed leading honours at the opening New Year dairy fixture earlier this month, struck again when their first prize newly calven Holstein Friesian heifer was crowned champion by judge Frank Wrathall, of Gisburn.

Craven Dairy Auction Jan 23 Johnson champ pic 1.jpgThe Johnsons, who have now bagged a trio of Craven Auction titles in the past four months, bought their latest victor as a bulling heifer from a dairy farmer in Scarborough. Having calved nine days prior to the show and sold giving 28 litres, she joined ringside regular Wick Williams, of Nantwich Cheshire.

From a consignment of five newly calven heifers, the Johnsons also sold entries at £2,240 and £2,220, to an overall average of £2,014.

On a day of robust trade, half of the 14 newly calven milkers forward sold for £2,000 and more, with heifers averaging £2,016, compared to £1,747 at the January opener.

Top price of £2,380 was achieved by a heifer from Robert Crisp, of Nelson Farm, Calton, knocked down to John Howard, of Carleton, who also acquired the champion at the New Year opener. In addition, Mr Crisp presented the third prize heifer, sold at £2,160 to Shaun Sowray at Bishop Thornton.

Frederick Broadwith, of Low Barn Farm, Thornton Watlass Ripon, turned out the reserve champion, the first prize newly calven Holstein Friesian cow. She too originated from the east coast when bought as a calf at a dispersal sale in Whitby. Giving 34 litres, the pedigree runner-up also joined Mr Williams for £2,020.

The second prize newly calven heifer from Brian Moorhouse, of Hesper Farm, Bell Busk, made £2,200 when acquired by Stephen Britton, of Ripon.

Three in-calf heifers from Hellifield's Richard Barron peaked at £1,710, averaging £1,653.

I am looking forward to a good trade next week and hardening through February in to March as numbers will now become a big player. Having just looked through my diary from last year, on the same sale last year hoggs averaged 178p/kgs. That's 18p/kg less or £7.56 for a 42kg hogg".

Another sizzling sale for Blue faced Leicester breeders at Carlisle with a joint top price of 8000gns.

The bids came for two ewe hoggs - one from Richard Hutchinson's Kirkby Redgate flock and the other from John Lord's Hewgill flock. Both flocks are based at Kirkby Stephen in Cumbria.

The Carlisle sale completed a phenomenal two days of selling for John Lord who achieved a new breed record price for a female when he sold a ewe hogg at Hawes last Saturday for £11,000.

"The breed is riding high at the moment. Demand has been tremendous at both sales," commented John Lord who runs 65 ewes in his Hewgill flock and which produced the previous female record holder at the 2011 Hawes fixture making £8000.

Note the Hawes sale is transacted in pounds sterling and the Carlisle sale in guineas.

Commercial in-lamb trade off to a good start

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

With the first "suck" lambs in the south west only weeks away from hitting the market and lambing already underway elsewhere in flocks hoping to scoop high spring lamb prices, those running more mainstream lambing flocks have been out and about assessing the in-lamb ewe trade.

It's clear from the first sales of commercial ewes that have been offered so far that there's going to be a strong demand from flockmasters keen to increase ewe numbers this year but it looks as though cash is still going to be spent with care. At Longtown in Cumbria a sale of full-mouth Suffolk ewes - some carrying triplets - found plenty of bidders but the best trade is yet to come for younger sheep carrying two lambs.

At Welshpool on Monday auctioneer Richard Evans had an easy job selling good quality full-mouth Texel-cross ewes carrying a range of lambs. Prices were up to £190 a head with full-mouth Suffolk ewes reaching £135.

"A good trade with a lot of interest considering some of these were full-mouth ewes. I have no doubt we are going to see a very good trade for younger sheep once we get into the bigger offerings of in-lambers."

Record trade seen in 2011

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Craven Cattle Marts experienced a record year in 2011 in terms of increases in both sales volumes and values - both good barometers of trade in the regional agricultural sector.

Livestock throughput in all sectors at Skipton Auction Mart sales throughout the year showed an increase on 2010, with some 270,000 prime, store and breeding sheep, and 20,000 prime, store and breeding cattle and calves sold last year.

Total numbers of store and breeding cattle sold in 2011 represented a 10.4% increase on the previous year. Cast cows were notably strong, with a 7.9% rise in numbers sold.

Sheep, too, performed well, with a 13.9% increase in sales numbers for prime lambs, hoggs and cast ewes. Store sheep sales were also up by 13.9% in numbers, with the number of breeding sheep sold up by 5.6%.

Commenting on 2011 trade Ted Ogden, CCM's farmstock sales manager and auctioneer, said: "Although we may have seen improved trading levels for livestock in 2011, recent figures published by EBLEX illustrate that this was the first time in many years that the 'retail price spread' - the percentage of the final retail price that the farmer receives - was above 50%.

"In previous years, the farmer had only received about 46-48% of the total retail price for beef and lamb paid by consumers. However, any perceived additional benefit that this may give to farmer producers and finishers is more than outweighed by many input costs - for example, the spiralling cost of feeds and fuel."

Gisburn Auction Marts, sale of rearing calves last Thursday saw 224 rearing calves forward. Topping the trade was J Shuttleworth and Son, Rylstone, Skipton with three Simmental bulls at £472, £462 and £458.

James Wellock, Eshton, Skipton headed the British Blues with a bull calf at £452, closely followed by a trio from Geoff Blezard, Hothersall, Longridge at £448, £445 and £440.

Photo.jpgA total of 20 bull calves made in excess of £400 and 76 calves of all breed and both sexes achieved sale prices in excess of £300.

Following the sale of calves was the fortnightly sale of stirks and young stores, with 64 forward. Top price of the day was £655 for a British Blue from WG Gill and Sons, Shelf, Halifax closely followed by John Bosworth, Bacup with a Bazadaise bull at £650. Black and White stirks sold to £370 and average £312.

HOGGET TRADE REMAINS GOOD BUT BE CAREFUL

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Anyone selling prime hoggets this week should heed the advice of auctioneers and not be tempted to hold back anything that is clearly ready to sell in the hope of an improving price.

A New Year "wobble" - particularly for home-trade hoggets - caught a few out who had held on to sheep before Christmas expecting to hit a rising market after the holiday.

Although the price of top quality export hoggets looked to be getting back on track at many markets last week - and even the home-kill sheep seemed more settled on price - buyers are still operating with care. News that New Zealand lamb is now appearing on the shelves - even though there were suggestions before Christmas that supplies would be tight - means UK lamb consumers have a cheaper option.

Yes, supplies of prime hoggets will get tighter as we move through the late winter and into early spring - and auctioneers report stores are getting harder to find in big numbers - but the advice is the same as it always was "sell them when they are ready".

With all the hype there's been about a boom-time for the spring hogget trade it's easy to think that the later they are sold the more money they will make. But while there's continued confidence in a sustained export demand, it will be for hoggets that fit the spec.
