British bred Texels draw attention in France

Glenway tups for SIA show web.jpg

A quartet of British Texel rams have been the star attraction this week at the world famous Salon International D'Agriculture (SIA), better known as the Paris Show.

The rams, sourced from flocks in the North East of England formed the centrepiece of the livestock display on the EBLEX stand at the event, helping draw French farmers and consumers to the stand to learn more about the high quality breeding stock and lamb available from England.

All four rams were selected by French breeders for use in French Texel flocks following a number of visits to the UK in the last 12 months by delegations of French breeders.

The rams were bought by leading French breeding company Genetique Ovine De France Sarl and will be used in a number of Texel flocks in northern France and have been sourced from the Glenway flock of Ian Murray, Northumberland, and the Alwent and Deneside flocks of the Nesbitt family, Co Durham.

Mr Murray said he was delighted to have secured further export business having previously exported Texels to Switzerland.

The Glenway tups are both high indexed sheep, with one being a top 5% son of £8,000 sire Teiglum Nightlight and the other being by 30,000gns Castleknowe Matchmaker and out of a Lumbylaw-bred dam.

Meanwhile Mr Nisbett said the export demonstrated the exceptional quality of the Texels now found in the UK. "The two rams we're sending are from some of our best lines and also carry good performance figures."

Both rams are by 18,000gns sire Allanfauld Rockafella, a tup bought in partnership at the Lanark sale in 2010. "One has an index of 354 and is out of an Alwent Neutron daughter, while the other goes back to Mellorvale Masterpiece. They were picked by the French for both their performance and their breed character."

Additionally, the breeders have selected a number of stock rams to collect semen from for export to France later in the year ahead of the 2012 breeding season. Sires selected include Ettrick Rainbow Warrior owned jointly by Messrs Wilkinson and Nisbett, Teiglum Rembrandt owned by the Clark family, Ettrick Sir Alan owned by Gordon Gray, Knock Papoose owned by Maurice Hardy-Bishop, Milnbank Sargeant Pepper owned by Keith Jamieson and Cambwell Laird owned by Robert Laird.

Commenting on the semen export former British Texel Sheep Society president Mr Gray said it was a real 'coals to Newcastle' moment for the Texel breed. "To be exporting Texel genetics back to France nearly 40 years after the first Texels came to Britain is a mark of the breed's success in Britain.

"The French breeders were blown away by the quality of the British Texels they saw when they visited last year and particularly by the quality of their conformation, skins and character. Their enthusiasm for our Texels was fantastic to see."

The quality of British Texel genetics is quickly becoming widely recognised across Europe and demand is increasing as more European sheep producers recognise the exceptional growth and carcass traits offered by the breed, said Mr Yates.

It's all good news for British breeders and is clear recognition of the exceptional work they've done in developing the breed since its first importation into Britain nearly 40 years ago, he added.

"We've worked hard in recent years to ensure the world knows about the quality of the British Texel and the demand for British genetics is now being seen across the globe. The Texel breed's strength in depth in the UK and the variety or phenotypes on offer here means we have something to suit every market and are well placed to serve export markets in the future."

Birches Little Man web.jpgPortadown based sister and brother, Sarah and Sam Matchett are toasting success after leading AI company Dovea Genetics selected their Aberdeen Angus bull Birches Little Man L923 to join their stud for 2012.

This young pair first started breeding Aberdeen Angus in 1998 when Sam Matchett was given heifer Drumcrow Lima G266 for his eighth birthday present. This foundation female was bred by Frank McKieran, Co Cavan.

A successful mating with the herd's stock bull Cloghogue Evolution resulted in Birches Little Man L923 being born in March 2011. Evolution was Junior Champion at RUAS, Balmoral in 2009, Ulster Champion 2010 and formed part of the highly coveted Pairs Championship at Castlewelland Show in both 2010 and 2011.

His first son quickly made a name for himself on the local show circuit collecting red tickets at Saintfield and Enniskillen shows last season. He also scooped the Best Bull award at Enniskillen and was Reserve Champion Bull Calf at the NI Aberdeen Angus Calf Show held in the Autumn.

An approach was made by Dovea Genetics towards the end of 2011 and a deal struck for Little Man to join their team of Angus bulls. Sarah and Sam were persuaded to sell their rising young star despite having their sights on the 2012 show season with him.

Dr Ger Ryan, General Manager at Dovea Genetics commented when first details of the sale emerged "We are delighted to have been able to secure Birches Little Man L923 as he just oozes style and breed character. His sire has always been greatly admired, especially here in the South and I feel there will be real interest in this young bull."

p Shadwell web.jpgThe Shadwell Estate Aberdeen-Angus herd has sold two year old herd sire and past show bull Shadwell Black Broughton K485 for a substantially high five-figure and herd record price to the Idvies herd of Messrs F J Fraser and Son, Newton of Idvies, Forfar.

Broughton is a son of the Norfolk-based herd's past senior herd sire Muirhall Total Deal E009 and is out of the Blelack Blacksmith Y291 daughter Shadwell Blackbird D181, who herself is a daughter of one of the herd's original foundation females, Blackbird T22 of Blelack, a proven matron of the breed.

Shows as a yearling, Broughton has taken great success on the 2011 summer circuit culminating in the junior and reserve male championship at the summer National Show, male champion and native performance bull at the Royal Welsh Show and reserve breed champion at the Royal Berkshire Show.

New owner Alastair Fraser, who runs 60 pedigree cows, along with his son Graeme under the Idvies prefix, said: "This bull was a must buy bull in my mind. His sire is an outcross for my herd and many others and I was particularly impressed with Total Deal daughters in the herd. Broughton is correct, has great stature and all the easing fleshing and calving attributes the breed is known for."

He added: "He is top 1% for 200, 400 and 600-day growth rates and has had a successful show career behind him." Broughton has been purchased to compliment daughters of the £32,000 Rawburn Rommell and the 24,000gns Lockerley Legolas, who is owned in partnership with the Rawburn herd.

Speaking of the sale Shadwell Estate Stud Director Richard Lancaster said: "We were reluctant to sell Broughton as we had retained him as a junior herd sire and he has served cows in the herd already. However, selling to a highly acclaimed herd such as Idvies was too good an opportunity to pass by and we wish the Fraser family the very best of luck with their purchase." Shadwell Estate have retained 200 straw of semen for private use only.

Ewe trade stood firm, maintaining recent high levels, with plenty of strong ewes selling at £100-plus at Skipton Auction Mart's weekly sale of 2,674 prime sheep.

Leading price of the day at £130.50 each fell to a pen of 11 Beltex-cross ewes from Martin and Val Brown Newton-le-Willows, Bedale.

As expected, the hogg trade was down a touch, while export weights of 37kg to 42kg were fewer in number and sold to a similar trade on the week. However, 35-38kg Mule and Swaledale hoggs found a ready market due to a shortage to fill ethnic orders.

Craven Cattle Marts' farmstock sales manager and auctioneer Ted Ogden commented: "Vendors should note that hoggs can currently make as much, if not more per head, at 40-42kg than at 44-45kg.

"Additionally, in current market conditions, there appears to be no benefit to incurring additional feed costs and marketing Suffolk and Continental hoggs at this medium weight range of 44-45kg."

The overall average for prime hoggs was £83.54 per head or 195.6p/kg, with cull ewes averaging £78.62 and cast rams £76.98.

In the prime cattle section, steers under under-30 months sold to 181.5p/kg, or £1,062 for a British Blue-x from JJ Beckwith & Sons, Gargrave, while heifers averaged 171.84p/kg, selling to a high of 183.5p/kg, or £973, for another British Blue from Geoff Eccles, Worsthorne.

The overall selling average in the 30-48-month age range was 135.89p/kg, headed at £1,237, 155.5p/kg, for a black and white heifer from CM & EM Gratton, Ripley.

Cull cows averaged 126.70p/kg, or £813 per head, peaking at £1,116, 155.5p/kg for a Blonde from Joe Drinkall, Chorley.

Hopes Auction Co, Wigton held their weekly sale of Primestock when there was an entry of 186 Cattle including 36 Bulls, and 568 Prime Sheep including Ewes.

Although there was a decent show of cattle numbers, overall quality was less. Trade remained strong with the top end remaining at decent peaks.

Bulls continued to produce excellent returns with a top price of 218.5p and Black and White bulls to 180.5p.

Top price for Steers was 227.5p per kg for a Limousin which was shown by D Anderson, Crosby House Farm. Top price per head of £1591.53 was for a Blonde Steer shown by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks.

The top price of 225.5p per kg was paid for a Limousin Heifer shown by L Skelton & Son, Low House Farm, Dearham and was purchased by G Riley & Sons, Dunnockshaw. A Limousin Heifer shown by Messrs Bowe, Bothel Parks made the top price per head of £1509.01 and was purchased by R J Harrison, King Street, Wigton.

The top price of 218.5p per kg was paid for a British Blue Bull shown JG & M Little, Greenhill Farm. The top price per head for bulls was £1640.09 for a Blonde Bull shown by Messrs Mitchell, Grassknop Farm.

Over Thirty Months cattle sold to 222.5p per kg paid for a Charolais Heifer shown by D A Harrison, The Old Vicarage, Wigton

McCartney's of Kington reported a better entry of 1700 sheep yesterday, with a much stronger trade than had been seen elsewhere during the beginning of the week.

There were still a large number of 45kg plus hoggets on the market due to less lambs being marketed throughout January and early February which are becoming more difficult to sell compared to hoggets under 43kgs.

An entry of 1350 hoggets sold to a good trade with 45 to 49kg hoggets being the most difficult to sell. The whole market averaged 206ppk up to 220ppk. The lambs sold to £100 per head for some 60kg lambs from GET Jones, Penllan & DL Williams, Upper Parks.

Hoggets between 38kg and 43kg which were of export spec were sort after and fetch premium prices. Heavier hoggets between 45kg and 49kg were more difficult to sell than previous weeks they averaged a good 185.20ppk.

Some 39kg hoggets from RT Sankey & Co made £83.50, 39kg hoggets from NI Bevan, Trothlands made £83, some 43kg from AM & GJ Probert, Drevour made £89.80, 45kg from Tenbury Farm Supplies made £91.50, some 46kg from DR Williams, Lodge made £93.80.

There was a good entry of 350 cull ewes selling to another exceptional trade which would be similar to last week. The ewes sold to a top of £138 and all the ewes averaged an excellent £91.40 per head with many hill ewes forward. Tups sold to a good trade with a top of £140 and to average £100 per head. The cull ewes included a large proportion of thinner mule ewes and smaller hill ewes.

South Craven dairy farmer Richard Spence excelled with two exceptional youngsters top see off strong opposition and secure both leading honours at Skipton Auction Mart's February rearing calf show and sale, which produced the hottest trade for many years.

Mr Spence, of Low Jackfield Farm, Sutton-in-Craven, saw his five-and-a-half week-old first prize British Blue-cross bull calf progress to become supreme champion, while his red rosette-winning 33-day-old Limousin-sired bull calf was also chosen as reserve champion by judge Peter Bartley, of Garstang. Both are by Genus sires, out of home-bred British Friesian cows.

CCM Feb Calves Spence champ pic (solo).jpg"It's some calf - the best I have seen in ages," said Mr Bartley of his chosen champion,

The title winner justified his faith when selling for £470, second top call of the day, while the runner-up also performed well when making £440.

20922012 4883.JPG
A new Charolais breed average has been set at the Perth Bull Sales here at United Auctions in Stirling, with a total of 168 bulls selling to an average of £7,653.

This is up £1,765 (23%) from the February 2011 sales where 166 bulls sold to an average of £5,888.

The breed society's chief executive David Benson said:  "It was a great solid trade, with 34 bulls selling at 10,000gns or more.  The top end bulls were very good, and we had an increase in hits to the online catalogue ahead of the sale."

He said the record prices reflected the fact Charolais x steers and heifers are currently getting on average 10% higher prices than other continentals (source AHDB).

This was backed up by United Auctions' David Leggat:  "The Charolais x have had an amazing autumn and spring."

Commenting on the selection of bulls put forward this week, he said:  "It was a very level show and the locomotion in the cattle was greatly improved.

"The buyers were being, as ever, selective and EBVs were a clear factor in the sales."

Orkney based Charolais breeder, Ronnie Baillie has received the Harman Charolais Genetic Improvement Award 2012.

Mr Baillie received the award for his 50 cow Baillieston pedigree herd which is recognised as making the greatest genetic progress in Scotland during the last 12 months. His Toab based herd also achieved the biggest improvement in SRI in the British Charolais herdbook.

Herd progress was measured by the greatest improvement in the Self Replacing Index (SRI) for the calves born in 2010, and recorded over 2010/2011. All Breedplan recording society members with a minimum recorded 10 calves were eligible to enter. During the period, the Baillieston herd SRI increased from an average SRI +30.7 to SRI +40.2.

On receiving the award Mr Baillie said: "I'm thrilled to receive this award for Scotland and even more so to have achieved the biggest herd SRI improvement across UK breeders. We have always paid careful attention to the management of our females and to the sires we select.

"We initially used Dingle Hofmeister across the herd and he greatly improved the female line and made a noticeable appreciation to our Breedplan data. Next, we invested 15,000gns in a new stock bull Maerdy Deiniol in Carlisle in 2009, a decision which signalled a more focused approach towards using the data. Since then, Deioniol's figures have increased to within the breed's top1% at TI +62 and SRI +64, and that subsequent trend is reflected in his progeny."

He added: "Quality looks will always play an important part in my decision making process, however Breedplan data is now also a very important tool in the selection of which bulls we use."

>> The winning members in England are James Kimber, Chippenham Wiltshire (Beanhill) with a 12 month SRI improvement from SRI +34.3 to SRI +43.3; Northern Ireland, Will Short, Omagh, County Tyrone (Woodpark) SRI +29.6 to SRI +34.1; and Wales, Arwel Owen, Welshpool, Powys (Trefaldwyn) SRI +28.2 to SRI +32.4

20922012 Lot 442.JPG

Both supreme overall and reserve titles have gone to Balymle Bollinger sons - the same bull that sired the record-breaking 70,000gns bull in October last year.

And it was bulls put forward by J Irvine & Son who run the Inverlochy herd at Kirkmichael, Tomintoul, Ballindalloch, that reigned supreme.

The title of supreme Charolais champion has gone to today's junior champion Inverlochy Fencer (lot 442), while the reserve overall champion title went to today's intermediate champion Inverlochy Ferdie (lot 416).

Today's champion, (pictured above) Inverlochy Fencer is a Balmyle Bollinger son, out of Inverlochy Volga.  He was overall interbreed senior champion at the Stars of the Future show in Forfar in November 2011, and boasts a SRI of +56 and a TSI of +44.

20922012 Lot 416.JPG
Meanwhile, the reserve (pictured above), Inverlochy Ferdie, is also a Balmyle Bollinger son, and out of Inverlochy Une.  He is a full borther to Inverlochy Edict who sold for 11,000gns at this fixture last year.  He boasts a SRI of +47 and a TSI of +40.

Judge Martin Ryan of Copperfield House, Cabra Thurles, Co Tipperary said:  "The champion was probably the most perfectly conformed animal I have come across in my time of judging cattle.

"And strangely I have never seen a champion and reserve to be so like each other .  The reserve was a little bit shorter than the champion and not as much in the line, but outside of that I think they were almost prototypes of each other."

.....

The title of senior champion was awarded to Mr N F Massie's Blelack Forester (lot 257).  A Maerdy Dublin son and out of Blelack Champers, this one has a SRI of +38 and a TSI of +48.

Meanwhile, the reserve senior champion award was presented to Miss K Millar's Lakelady Flint (lot 271).  This one is by Kersknowe Clansman and out of Lochend Trixie; he has a SRI of +37 and a TSI of +45.

.....

Taking the intermediate champion was J Irvine & Son's Inverlochy Ferdie (lot 416).  This one is by Balmyle Bollinger and out of Inverlochy Une; he has a SRI of +62 and a TSI of +62.

And in reserve was another one from J Irvine & Son, Conval Frank (lot 414).  This one is by Lochend Apache and out of Conval Charm.  He has a SRI of +54 and a TSI of +55.

.....

Taking the junior  champion title was Inverlochy Fencer (lot 442) from J Irvine & Son.  This Balymyle Bollinger son is out of Inverlochy Volga and has a SRI of +56 and a TSI of +40.

Meanwhile, the reserve title was awarded to Mr H Goldie's Goldies Fellow (lot 501).  This Goldies Champion son is out of Goldies Carol, and has a SRI of +34 and a TSI of +32.

Sedgemoor Market celebrates four years of success

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Sedgemmor-7 (2).jpgAuctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt are celebrating the anniversary of four years of business at Sedgemoor Auction Centre.

The auction centre opened in January 2008, and since then throughput of livestock has increased by 30% from 278,000 head in 2008 up to 359,000 in 2011.

And according to auction partner Robert Venner, who is in charge of sales at Sedgemoor, sales of prime cattle have risen from an average value of less than £800 to more than £950, with the best selling for well in excess of £1,400. This increase in value of finished cattle has reflected back through the store cattle, stirk and calf trades. Best calves are now selling for more than £400, compared to £300 in 2008.

Similarly prime lambs have increased from an average of less than £60 a head in 2008 to close to £90 in 2011. This increase in value has also been mirrored by the store lambs.

However, the most encouraging improvement in trade for farmers has been in their cull stock, says Mr Venner. Barren cows have increased from £560 to £730 and cull ewes from £31 to £78 on average.

Meanwhile breeding ewes have increased from an average of £60 to £113. And suckler cows have also increased in value dramatically, when both residual meat and rearing calf values have led the way.

With regards dairy cattle, Mr Venner says trade has returned to the level of two years ago with the best heifers now selling for more than £2,000 with very few cows and heifers selling for under £1000, fuelled by the strong barren cow trade.

The 7th Show and Sale of Show Potential Cattle at Brecon drew in a large contingent of buyers from the West Country, and resulted in good solid trade with 100% clearance of the 98 animals on offer.

The steers topped at £5,500 for a Red Limousin x Steer from Messrs Powell of Penyrheol, selling to Mike Alford from Stillmans (the Alfords had a great run of success on the winter showing circuit in 2011 with Pokemon), while the heifers topped at £3,450 for the reserve champion, an eight-and-a-half month old heifer out of a British Blue cow, and sired by a Limousin - Black Mist from JM & AM Lewis, Pentwyn.

Other leading prices included £3,100 for a six-month-old Limousin X heifer, Roxy Rose, bred and shown by Miss Emily Jones of Coedmore Halle.  The buyer was Mr G Brooke of Worcester.  Meanwhile Wendy Morgan, of Nantgwynne, sold Limousin steer Bruno Mars for £2,700 to Mr Harvey, White Gables Farm.

And judge Mr Mike Owens of Glantre, sold an eight-month-old Limousin steer Impreze for £2,350 to Davies Bros Trefenter.  The same vendor also bought a ten-month-old British Blue heifer, Misteq, from DG & E Lewis.  Meanwhile, a five-month-old Black Limousin x, Baby Belle, from Mr Colin Phillips sold for £2,300 to Mr T Bodily of Parsonage Farm.

And overall, more than 12 cattle put forwarded exceeded the £2,000 mark.  Auctioneer Chris Jones said the interest the sale had gathered was "tremendous" and everyone who attended was not disappointed due to the quality of "exceptional cattle" put forward, as demonstrated in the 100% clearance.

>>The show saw the title of supreme champion go to a heifer bred by Messrs Price of Gelliwern Ganol.  This one was bred by Limousin bull Glandgwden Arnie, and sold to Mr R Kingston of the Crown Farm, West Country.

CCM working dogs John Bell top price pic 2 WEB.jpg
The opening sale of 115 working dogs at Skipton Auction Mart saw two bids topping the 4,000gns mark.

The leading price on the day of 4,800gns was achieved by John Bell, Parks Farm Howden, Selby for his two-year-old black and white bitch Nell.  She was bought by Scottish Highlands breeder Jock Sutherland, of Keoldale Farm, Sangormore, Durness.

Nell is by Caithness-based MA Cook's Spot, himself a well-bred son of Scottish parentage, being by D McDonald's Dave, out of Michael Shearer's Bess. Nell was emulating her dam Dot, who is by Welshman Kevin Evans' 2008 International Supreme champion Mirk, and headed the prices for Mr Bell at Skipton two years ago.

She will be used for work, trials and breeding by her new owner, who farms North Country Cheviots in the most north westerly village on mainland Britain and was a member of the Scottish trials team in 2007.

Mr Sutherland said:  "I will have her ready for the 2012 nurseries."

The next leading price on the day was 4,200gns for a 13-month-old black and white bitch from Shaun Richards, of Watson Laith, Hapton, Burnley.  Fan, is a daughter of Rossendale breeder Alf Kyme's Moss, out of Mr Richards' own Meg.

She found a new home in Suffolk with Eddie Thornalley, of Mildenhall, shepherd for Andrew Foulds at Elveden.

Meanwhile Ireland's Michael Gallagher from Armoy, County Antrim, achieved 3,000gns for his September 2010 born black and white and mottled bitch Fly.  She is by his father Aiden Gallagher's Jimmy, out of the vendor's own Lyn.

BFL gimmer hoggs hit £800 at Skipton

Gimmer hoggs hit £800 at the annual show and sale of Blue Faced Leicester females at Skipton Auction Mart.

Taking the champion and reserve champion title at the show, as well as the two top prices of £800 was father and son duo David and Robin Booth, who run the Smearsett flock of Old Hall Cottage, Feizor.

CCM BFL Females Booth champ pic.jpgThe title winner (pictured above), 2968/D30, is by the home-bred B13 Smearsett, also known as Black Tag, out of a dam sired by the £17,000 ram, W2 Lunesdale, from Gordon Rawsthorne at Nether Kellet, Carnforth. She sold to the Hewness flock of Kevin and James Wilson at Blubberhouses.

Meanwhile the reserve champion (pictured above), 2968/D43, is by C1 Shafthill, bred by John Smith-Jackson at Haltwhistle, near Hexham, while the dam, by T1 Lunesdale, also bred Peter Fell's renowned stock tup at Castle Hill, near Ulverston. She also sold for £800 and goes to join the Micklaw flock of Will Wildman in Kirkby Malham.

Other leading prices on the day included £650 for the first prize in-lamb female.  This 2-shear ewe 2782/B24, came from the Chelker flock of Joe and Nancy Throup at Berwick Intake Farm, Draughton. By the Dalehead sire 2945/A1 and in-lamb to the Cumbrian sire Y5 Hewgill, she sold locally  to James Middleton, of Arncliffe.

Next best at £600 was a home-bred gimmer hogg from the Ilkley Moor flock of 2011 show champions Ellis Brothers, of Addingham Moorside. By Ilkley Moor B23, a son of Neil Marston's Z4 Hundith, and out of an ewe by the Ellis's own Kirkby Redgate sire, she found a new home with Brontë breeder A P Percival, who runs a small flock of Blue Faced Leicesters at Haworth and also purchased last year's title winner.

The show was judged by Chris Heath of Macclesfield, who breeds Blue Faced Leicester, Mule, Swaledale and Beltex.

Limousins set new centre record at Dungannon

RRahoney Fantastic Supreme Champion 4,800gns web.jpgA strong trade at the British Limousin Cattle Society's Spring Bull & Female Sale held at Dungannon Farmers Mart yesterday realised a centre record average of £3,135.

In all, 29 out of the 30 bulls found homes to achieve a 97% clearance rate with averages up over £400 on the year. Nine out of the 11 heifers forward  sold to an average £2,292 - up £789 on the corresponding sale in 2011, and another record average.

Top price of the day went to the Overall Supreme Champion, Rahoney Fantastic, bred by Messrs H & D McFarland, Trillick. This May 2010 born bull carries a Beef Value of LM+37 and was sold for 4,800gns to Mr R Matthewson, Newtownstewart, for his commercial herd.

Rahoney Fantastic is sired by the herd's stock bull Drummin Beau, a Mas Du Clo son purchased privately from Mr J McInerney, Limerick. The dam of Rahoney Fantastic is the homebred Homebyres Visitor daughter, Rahoney Bethany, who also holds Tanat Mostyn bloodlines. Judge Mrs Mary Reynolds, Buriton, Petersfield, Hampshire had earlier put him up as her Champion in the pre-sale Show.

Second top price of 4,700gns went to Ballynahone Fantastic bred by Mr R Henderson, Tobermore and sold to Mr N Donagh, Londonderry. This September 2009 bull had been placed second in a very strong intermediate class where the top three placed bulls averaged £4,130. Ballynahone Fantastic is sired by the prolific 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic and is out of the dam Sarkley Velveteen, a Ronick Gains daughter. He was sold with a Beef Value of LM+40.

Next best were two bulls at 4,100gns apiece. First into the sale ring was Ballyrobin Firestone, the Reserve Senior Champion, consigned by Miss J Gilliland, Antrim. May 2010 born, he is sired by Ironstone Bomber and is out of the homebred dam, Ballyrobin Scallywag. Purchaser was by Mr P Rafferty, Forkhill.

Also achieving the price of 4,100 gns was Millgate Finlay, the Junior and Overall Reserve Champion. This September 2010 born bull, bred by Mr M Loughran, Dunamore is by the AI sire Rocky and is out of the Pelletstown Ken daughter, Carmorn Tanya. He sold with a Beef Value of LM+27 to Mr W Ferguson, Wheathill, Derrygonnelly.

Three more bulls fetched bids of 4,000gns. Mr & Mrs R J Campbell, Templepatrick, Ballyclare achieved this price for both their bulls: Ashmore Fivestar, sired by Wilodge Vantastic, when heading to Mr D Clark, Antrim; and Ashmore Floyd, sired by Milbrook Tanko, when snapped up by Mr K Farrell, Fivemiletown. Also achieving 4,000gns was the Intermediate Champion Eniver Fran, a Rocky son bred by Mr M McKeefry, Garvagh when going under the hammer to Mr E Charlton, Honey Haugh, Forfar, Scotland.

Female trade was equally strong with a top price of 3,800gns for the Female Champion, Grenville Frances, brought forward by Mr G Clarke, Keady. Charolais and Simmental breeders look like being on a fairly safe wicket at next week's Stirling Bull Sales if the opening fixture was setting a trend.

Bidding kicks-off next Monday with an entry of 175 Simmental sires followed by 250 Charolais on Tuesday.

This premier fixture for Charolais breeders marks the start of the breed society's 50th anniversary year but while pedigree breeders may be in celebratory mood it's the exceptionally strong demand for Charolais store cattle in recent months that's expected to produce stiff competition for crossing bulls among suckled calf producers.

But while EBV figures will continue to factor in a growing number of bull buyers' selections, the challenge will be choosing bulls that demonstrate the breed's reputation for high growth rate along with the "safety factor" of a good Calving Ease figure.

Dig deep enough into the catalogue ahead of the sale and those bulls are there. Achieving a Terminal Sire index of over +60 and a Calving Ease of over +10 is achievable and the bulls are available - but the "curve bender" sires are bound to be the ones that quickly ratchet up the bidding next week.

Banffshire breeders John and Raymond Irvine were in the limelight when they took the championship at the Stars of the Future event at Forfar last November with their Charolais bull Inverlochy Fencer. By the 30,000gns Balmyle Bollinger - the Dingle Hofmeister son that sired the breed's 70,000gns record breaker - he has a Terminal Sire Index of +44 and a Calving Ease figure of +10.5. Fencer looks like one to watch.

Hofmeister comes through strongly in entries from Carlisle-based breeder Peter Vasey who offers a Terminal Sire Index of +45 and Calving Ease figure of +8.2 with the Hofmeister son Edenhurst Faberge while Robert and Kay Adam's Newhouse entries by the 10,000gns Balmyle Churchill boast EBV figures bound to command attention.

And there's no shortage of aspirational vendors parading Bollinger sons, among them Fifeshire's Andrew Stevenson with Bonerbo Fire  - a bull with a Terminal Sire Index of +44 and Calving Ease figure of +13.2.

Neil Massie's string includes Blelack Fantastic, the first son of the 15,000gns Goldies Dynamite and out of a cow by the 25,000gns Thrunton Socrates. Fantastic has a Terminal Sire Index of +82 and a Calving Ease figure of +1.7 Major Walter's Balthayock bulls by Balmyle Churchill and Balthayock Adonis will certainly find favour among those demanding high ranking performance data.

And it's a case of "back to the future" for those who remember the furore caused by the introduction of polled genetics into the Charolais breed almost 30 years ago. Now the poll-factor is back with bulls on offer next week by the French sire Unico from Charlie Boden's Sportsmans herd and Danny Wyllie at Newroddige.

Lancashire Simmental breeder Michael Barlow returns with another string of bulls by Ashland Tornado - the bull that sired his 17,000gns top priced Denzies Amazon at this fixture last year. And Michael Durno of Ballindalloch is hoping for more good fortune with sons of Saltire Talent who sired the 20,000gns Auchorachan Wizard at this sale two years ago.

Back in 2009 Dressogue Victorious was the first bull to be sold by Co Tyrone breeder Seamus O'Kane. He made 14,000gns and stood reserve champion. Next week Seamus will lead his sole entry Dressogue Barney into the ring - a full brother to Victorious and with a terminal Sire Index of +65.

Farm manager Adrian Ivory brings the first sons of Victorious to next week's sale from the Strathisla herd backed up by some good Breedplan figures.

Skerrington Vanguard, the Corskie Proton son bought for 10,000gns in 2008, has bred well for Finlay McGowan at Dirnanean. Vanguard sons with EBV figures bolstered by strong maternal traits from Dirnanean will be worth checking out.

Lachlan Quarm's only entry is Annick Brandy which stood reserve junior male champion at the Scottish National Simmental Show and is one of the first sons to be offered by the successful show winning bull Annick Valentino who is by Sterling Nelson.

Willie Robson and Sons bring a strong team from their Kilbride Farm herd at Ballyclare including the Seaview Prince Charming son Kilbride Farm Benone. Reckoned to be one of the heaviest and fastest growing bulls ever bred in the herd, his terminal Sire Index of +88, Calving Ease figure of +2.4 and Self-Replacing Index of +90 gives him a top 5% breed ranking. He achieved 858kg at 400 days and is out of a powerful cow by Dovefields Gallant. Who said size doesn't count?

The first "suck" lambs of the season went under the hammer at Exeter Market today and topped at £96.50 for a pen of 54 kg pure-bred Poll Dorsets from Messrs DH & H Mildon & Son of Cadbury, near Exeter. Overall average was 213.75 a kilo or £87.12 a head.

Although the sale was somewhat overshadowed by an unexpectedly large entry of just over 1000 hoggets, the 104 suck lambs met a good trade and were up nearly £9 a head on the year. Top price per kilo was 233p for a pen of 37.4 kg lambs from Mr F E Tucker of Pennymoor, Tiverton.

Dennis Mildon, who runs 400 Poll Dorsets, started lambing at the end of October and despite the wet winter had managed to keep ewes and lambs outside.

"They've been on grass all the way through and the lambs have had some creep, but they've never been inside," said Mr Mildon.

Although prices were up on last year he had expected a bigger lift. "But this is only the first sale and our lambs may have been a bit heavier than we like them to be but most were singles that we'd kept hold of for this sale."

He sold 22 lambs on the day at an average weight of 45.5kg. "We'll be selling lambs every week now but the ideal weight for this trade is 42-44kg."

A spokesman for Exeter Market Auctioneers said the coming weeks would see suck lamb numbers steadily increase. "Last year it was March 14th before we had above 100 lambs and numbers jumped to 368.

"But I think some traditional sellers have lambed a bit later this year in the hope of targeting more lambs at the Easter trade which should start to have an impact on prices by late March."

Second top bid of the day was one of 14,000gns for the 21-month-old bull Milkieston Master (below) from Messsrs D&A Barr of Milkieston, Braidland, Stewarton, in Ayrshire. The buyer was C J and J M Symons of Attonburn, Yetholm, Kelso.

(hutch)251s web.jpgTwo other bulls made four-figure prices. One of them, Craigdarroch Minstrel (below), born in  March 2010 and brought out by Messrs W Graham and Son, Craigdarroch, Moniaive, Dumfriesshire, sold for 11,000gns.

(hutch)236bS web.jpgThe other, the 23-month-old Benhar Murray, shown by Robert McNee Ltd of Woodend Farm, Armadale, West Lothian, was sold at 10,000gns to David Stanners of Home Farm Lodge, Prescot, Merseyside.

Another record also tumbled with the top price of 3,600gns being achieved for a pair of in-calf heifers from Benhar.

(hutch)InCalfPairs002s web.jpgThe champion in calf heifers, Benhar Tulip  L39 and Benhar Clover L34, a pair from Robert McNee Ltd of Woodend Farm, sold for 3,600gns each and were snapped by Paddy Crerar.

The top priced bulling heifers were a pair shown by Loders Children's Settlement at Upper Chatto, Hownam, Kelso.  April 2010 born Upperchatto Maddie and Upperchatto Morag, born a month later, realised 2,200gns each to Glenlyon Estates, Fortinghall, Aberfeldy.

The champion pair of bulling heifer, Harehead M27 and Harehead M54, born in April 2010 and May 2010 respectively, came from Professor Penny and were bought at 1,800gns each by Messrs Lyth, Sheephouse Farm, Higher Greens, Stacksteads, Lancs.

Bull averages soared more than £2,700 to level out at £6,874 for the 19 sold while the bulling heifers rose to £1,324, up £148 on the year for the 169 head while the 49 in calf heifers averaged £1,936.

Robin Anderson, managing director of Wallets Marts, Castle Douglas, the auctioneers, said: "I think everyone, sellers and purchasers are delighted with the trade.

"Bulls were a fantastic trade and this is a new record price for Luing bulls. Heifers were a realistic price which allowed first time buyers to make purchases."

He added: "Luings are becoming more popular, they are fast becoming recognised as the ideal suckler cow and can be out-wintered."

Semen from British bred Limousin sold to France

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Carmorn Copilot II web.jpgThe e-commerce company Semenstore has announced the export sale to France of semen from the British-bred Limousin bull Carmorn Copilot.

The sale is thought to be the first semen sold, from a UK-bred Limousin bull, back to France - the home of the Limousin breed.  Details of the semen sale have followed hard on the heels of the first export sale to France of a British-bred Limousin bull, Grange Gervaise, just under a fortnight ago.

A quantity of 150 straws of Carmorn Copilot has been sold on behalf of the bull's owner, Derek Hume, Maghereagh Road, Randalstown, Northern Ireland to KBS Genetic, Beauvalet, France. KBS now plans to market this semen to pedigree and commercial Limousin breeders within France.

Commenting on this export first, Jean-Luc Kress of KBS Genetic said: "I first saw Carmorn Copilot together with his calves and his dam in April 2011 and took the decision there and then to import semen. I like the shape of UK Limousin genetics and think they will work well on French cows. I'm delighted to be importing the first semen straws from a UK-bred Limousin bull back to France."

KBS Genetic was set up in 1998 and sells semen throughout Europe and Australia. It also exports livestock Europe-wide, having recently been responsible for the export of 700 head of pedigree cattle to Russia in 2011 with another shipment of 1,000 head planned to Kazakhstan in 2012.

The four-year-old Carmorn Copilot was bred by Francis McAuley, Toomebridge, N Ireland and has a wealth of breeding behind him.  He is sired by the prolific 42,000gns Wilodge Vantastic and is out of the dam Carmorn Penny, whose sire is Pelletstown Ken. Penny has been a consistent breeding cow and has sold calves up to 10,500gns at auction.

Carmorn Copilot is owned by Derek Hume who farms in Randalstown, Co Antrim alongside his wife, Heather, and sons Graham, Gary, Ian and Ryan who all share an interest in the farm. Heather also works part-time as Secretary of the Northern Ireland Limousin Cattle Club. The Humes' Culnagechan pedigree herd has expanded to between 50 and 60 pedigree Limousin breeding cows over the last 9 years since its establishment in 2003.

822012_Perth_Lim_Lot_580.JPGA sample of bulls on offer from the Newhouse herd of Messrs R M Adam and Son, Newhouse of Glamis, Forfar, saw the big bids in the Limousin ring with their entry of nine bulls seeing an average of £8,377.

Topping the trade at 16,000gns was black bull, Newhouse Black Fullback (Lot 580) with 95% black genetics black coat. The fact he was homozygous for black and polled genetics was the main attraction for purchaser, Keith Redpath, Redpath Farms, Spylaw Farm, Kelso.

"It's hard to find a good black bull with these features. I was needing new genetics and this bull had everything that I haven't got in my cattle. I have a lot of black heifers needing something to go on them."

Fullback, which is a son of Tamarvalley Boscastle and out of Newhouse Bess, will join the herd of 10 cows and will possibly have semen collected from him to be sold through Mr Redpath's AI stud. He has a beef value of +33 and a calving ease EBV in the top 25% of the breed.

Next best at 15,000gns was another offering from the Newhouse herd, this time (lot 579 below) Newhouse Black Frisky - a Tamarvalley Boscastle son with a beef value of +55.

822012_Perth_Lim_Lot_579.JPG Overall champion Elrick Falcon (lot 508 below) from Mr M J Massie, Mains of Elrick, Ellon, was secured for a 12,000gns bid from Murray Alexander, Mains of Mause, Perthshire.

822012_Perth_Lim_Lot_508.JPGThis one is by Wilodge Vantastic and out of Elrick Caroline and sold with a beef value of +34.

Then at 11,000gns was the reserve senior champion (lot 518) Dyke Fugitive from Messrs J R MacGregor, Dyke Farm, Milton of Campsie.

822012_Perth_Lim_Lot_518.JPGDyke Fugitive has a beef value of +18 and an above average figure for calving ease. This Drumduff Champ son sold to C Coubrough and Co, Whelphill, Crawford.

Snapped up for 10,500gns was Stephick Flashi (lot 574) from local bidder Stephanie J Dick, Westerton of Cowie, Cowie.

822012_Perth_Lim_Lot_574.JPGThis is the first bull to be sold from the Stephick herd and has come from a run of show successes last summer, including reserve breed champion at Kinross Show and third place at the national Limousin show. He has a beef value of +40 and sold to Drunhilla Farm, NI.

At 9,000gns it was lot 589, Newhouse Fabain from the Newhouse herd. This Hudscales Bigboy son sold to A and R Paton, Easter Greenhill, Falkirk. He has a beef value of +34.

822012_Perth_Lim_Lot_589.JPGAt 8,000gns was another black bull from the Newhouses, this time lot 581 Newhouse Black Freelander. He is by Hudscales Bigboy and out of Newhouse Vivian and has a beef value of +51. He sold to Macmillan, Ballimartin Farm, Isle of Islay.

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

822012 4413.JPGI've just had a wander around the ringside at the start of the Limousin showing this morning - quite a sparse crowd compared to the last two days. The mood seems to suggest the fireworks will be seen next week at Carlisle, rather than at today's fixture.

A lot of bulls are still yet to be seen in the show ring, but as yet, there doesn't appear to  be a specific favourite ringside. There's 86 animals forward, after a number were rejected at the inspection last night.

We'll keep an ear to the ground to see if the mood changes as more bulls make it out into the ring....

Perth Bull Sales 2012: Beef Shorthorn money makers

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

722012 Perth BS Lot 406.JPGVisitors to the Perth Bull sales not only witnessed a new individual Shorthorn breed record, but also a new breed average record..

In all, a total of 71 out of the 79 bulls put forward went under the hammer, with the breed average up £354 on the same time last year to £4,991.

And the Shorthorn Society's Frank Milnes puts much of the breed's renaissance and flying trade down to the Morrisons premium which has seen demand for the breed grow among commercial beef producers.

"This is the most bulls we've sold since the nineteen sixties.  It's been a great sale with one or two breeders looking for new stock bulls, but also a lot of demand from commercial producers and new buyers," he said.

722012 Perth BS Lot 412.JPGFalling not far behind this new breed record of 15,000gns, at 13,000gns, was Harry Horrell's Podehole Drummer (lot 412).  A son of Trojan of Craigeassie and out of Podehole Madeline Tiffany, this one has a TSI of +17 and a SRI of +15.  He was snapped up by M D McMillan, Moneydie Roger Farm, Perth.

722012 Perth BS Lot 461.JPGThere were also two bulls selling at 10,000gns.  Up first was The Hon. G. Turton's Dakota of Upsall (lot 461 above); a son of Broughton Park Thunder and out of Upsall Jilt, this one has a TSI of +17 and a SRI of +21, and was bought by John Scott at Fearn Farm, Tain.

The second bull to hit 10,000gns was another Major J.P.O. Gibb's Glenisla Dam Buster (lot 465).

722012 Perth BS Lot 465.JPG This one is by Glenilsa Badendum and out of Glenisla Eva Broadhooks.  It boasts a TSI of +25 and a SRI of +22, and was bought by Dorset-based breeder A Cooper.

Meanwhile, the female champion Chapelton Duke (lot 404), another one from Donald Biggar, sold for 8,500gns to Alvie Estates, Kelso.  This one is by Chapelton Typhoon and out of Chapelton Duchess, and has a TSI of +36 and a SRI of +28.

While the reserve, Blelack Major (lot 422) from Mr G Massie & Sons, sold for 7,000gns to Playfair Farms, Kelso.  This one is by Blelack Secret Service and out of Blelack Mavis, and has a TSI of +13 and a SRI of +11.

Perth Bull Sales 2012: Beef Shorthorn record smashed

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
722012 Perth BS Lot 406.JPG
Here on day two of the Perth Bull Sales 2012, the breed record has been smashed for a Beef Shorthorn bull from Donald Biggar.

Going under the hammer at United Auctions for 15,000gns was Chapelton Dauphin 3328 (lot 406) from Donald Biggar, selling to Mrs Jane Landers for her Cairnsmore herd.

This one is by Chapelton Dauphin and out of Chapelton Nettle 214, and has a TSI of +19 and a SRI of +19.  He comes from the bloodlines of two of the breed's most influential bulls - Tofts Romany and Chapelton Typhoon.

Commenting on the purchase, Mrs Landers said:  "I bought him to be our new stock bull; he was one of a couple of bulls I had my eye on from the start and I went for him because he is fleshy and looks as though he would breed easy fleshing animals.  He carries himself well.

"I hope he will be a good investment.  The first expensive bull I got I paid 11,000gns for, and he was a record price back then, but his first sons sold for 5,500gns and 6,500gns so he paid for himself quickly."

Cull ewes averaged £78.37 each, headed at £133.50 by a pen from John and George Stapleton, Skipton, with cast rams selling to a high of £118.50 from Kevin Marshall, Otley, and to an average of £84.13.

The store cattle section at the fortnightly sale (Wed, Feb 1) saw many heifers aged 18 months and upwards top £1,000, achieving an overall average of £833.

Heading the heifer prices at £1,480 was a British Blue-x from Craven Cattle Marts' chairman Anthony Hewetson, Bank Newton, who sold 10 of his 40-strong consignment at £1,000 or more.

Mr Hewetson also performed well with 11 store bullocks, including a British Blue-cross at £1,190, top price in both breed and section, and two further top prices - a Blonde- x at £935 and a black & white bullock for £910. He also had the top price pen of three British Blue-x bullocks at £910 per head.

Best of the Limousin-x heifers at £1,280 came from Jeff Pickles, Chapel le Dale, while the top price pen of three of more heifers - four Limousin-x from WA, VJ & JA Towler, Grindleton - each made £1,130.

Perth Bull Sales 2012: Beef Shorthorn predictions

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
I've just had a chat with the Beef Shorthorn Society's vice president Mark Holmes and he reckons tomorrow's sale is going to be see record prices as high as 20,000gns.

Why?  He says the breed is becoming much more in vogue with commercial breeders realising the benefits it offers in terms of ease of calving, growth rates, carcase value etc.  In fact, he has already had calls from commercial breeders asking him to buy bulls on their behalf - one being a Charolais producer wanting to put shorthorn on his cows.

Bulls to look out for, according to Mr Holmes, include a couple of young bulls at the beginning of the catalogue which have some "good American genetics behind them".

Big moneymakers could include Mr D J Biggar's Chapelton Duke (lot 404), which is a good fleshing bull with "great figures" according to Mr Holmes.  This one is by Chapelton Typhoon and out of Chapelton Duchess; he won junior male champion at last year's Royal Highland Show, and is a full brother to the February 2009 sale champion Braveheart.  He has a TSI of +36 and a SRI of +28.

Other ones to keep an eye on include Mr H Horrell's Podehole Debonair (lot 409), which Mr Holmes describes as a "big upstanding bull with plenty of power".  While Mr G Massie & Sons' Blelack Motivator (420) is also likely to sell well, coming from a good family.

"I think the current record at auction is 14,000gns, but I think we might beat that this week and we will be touching 18,000-20,000gns," adds Mr Holmes.

Perth Bull Sales 2012: Aberdeen Angus predictions

| 5 Comments | No TrackBacks
Aly has just spoken to the Aberdeen Angus society's Ron McHattie - he's picked lot 299, Eastfield Foreman as his favourite. This one is an April 2010 born Rawburn Rochester son from Messrs T H Brewis. Out of Eastfield Fawnia he has a TSI of +34 and a SRI of +34.

Lot 269 also caught his eye and may be a possible big money maker in the sale ring. From Whittaker and Co Farms, Flodden Earl Samuel was bred by J A Laing esq and is by Wrae Baker Boy and out of Flodden Evita Samantha. His sire, was reserve supreme champion at perth in 2007. His first two sons sold at auction for an average of 7,000gns at Perth in 2011.

However the main attention seems to be falling on an entry not included in the original catalogue - Glenbuchat Bruce (lot 192a) from David M B Sole. attracting attention for his size and power, Bruce is a Deveron Latimer son out of Dacre Bashful. He came second at Echt and Tarland shows during the summer of 2011 and his sire was bought for £14,000 from Hamish Sclater's Deveron herd. His dam was bought as a part of the dispersal of the Dacre herd at Perth. His EBVs aren't the best on offer today, with a TSI of +24 and a SRI of +31.

Talk suggested we may see some strong bids in the sale ring later around the 15,000gns mark but most seem to think we won't see any records (currently the record for Angus at Perth sits at 38,000gns and the overall breed record at 64,000gns).

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

Bulls with good conformation and high components were in strong demand at Holstein NI's 22nd annual spring show and sale, held at the Pedigree Sales Arena, Moira.

Prices soared to a top of 6,000gns and 5,600gns, and following an almost complete clearance Taaffe Auctions reported that 28 bulls changed hands to level at 2,866gns per head - an increase of 430gns on the same period last year when 25 lots averaged 2,436gns each.

Attracting the day's top price of 6,000gns was the Milk Quality Award winner Relough Amethyst ET (PLI £207) brought out by Ronald McLean, and sons Malcolm and Barry, from Donaghmore, Dungannon, County Tyrone.

Moira Bulls 5.jpghigh.jpgThis fourteen-month-old entry was sired by the O-Bee Manfred Justice son, Morningview Legend ET, and is bred from five generations of EX dams. His dam is Relough Shottle Amy who gave over 12,000kgs at 4.83%BF and 3.15%P in her second 305-day lactation.

This bull is a full brother to Relough Amazon ET and Relough Agent ET - sold privately to a German AI stud. Earlier in the day he caught the eye of judge Trevor Lochart to secure the honourable mention ribbons. Bidding was brisk for this eye catching young bull with auctioneer Michael Taaffe taking the securing bid from Trevor McKinney, Maghera, County Londonderry.

Following close behind at 5,600gns was the second prize winning Ards Soloman ET (PLI £86) consigned by Harry Patton, and sons Wallace and Wilson, from Newtownards, County Down.

Moira Bulls 6.jpg2nd high.jpgAlso born in November 2010 he is by the Comestar Stormatic son, Golden Oaks Alexander, while is dam is the noted Ridgefield Sara Rampage Red ET (VG89 3yr) - champion heifer in Holstein NI Herds Inspection Competition in 2009, and reserve supreme champion at Balmoral Show in 2009. The dam produced almost 13,000kgs at 3.93%BF and 3.28%P in her second 305-day lactation, and her daughters have sold to a top of 6,600gns, realised by Ards Baxter Sara ET at the Causeway Classic in 2009. Backed by seven generations of VG and EX dams this bull was snapped up by Mr G Gilmore from Portaferry, County Down.

The Patton family also sold a December 2010 born England Ammon Million ET son bred from Ridgefield Sara Rampage Red ET. The third prize winning Ards Soloman (PLI £103) sold for 3,900gns to Mr C Caldwell from Castlederg, County Tyrone. Five lots from the Ards herd sold to average 3,520gns per head.

Trade Talk: To sell or not to sell

| No Comments | No TrackBacks

By Jeremy Hunt,

To sell or not to sell - that's the question. And it's certainly a very vexing one for those with store stock and young stock in the system that could easily show a very healthy increase in value in the coming months.

Auctioneers must be running out of superlatives to describe the escalating prices we've seen across the entire livestock sector during January - a month that's usually struggling to get on terms with supply and demand.

While farming has become overly used to being on the back-foot it seems somewhat unreal - but nonetheless long-overdue and justified - that prices are so strong and that the word "shortages" is being widely used by auctioneers to explain the week-on-week improving trade.

It's not a word that has yet permeated the shopping aisles of the supermarkets, if it had, consumer panic would already have set in. But all livestock numbers are tight and getting tighter and the value of stock can only improve if the supply and demand situation continues.

This is an unusual situation for livestock producers and a challenging one for auctioneers. To sell or not to sell? If we're going to achieve some sort of marketing balance for the long-term good of all concerned this is certainly a time for some constructive dialogue between these two key players in the selling game.

By Jeremy Hunt,

The Beef Shorthorn is certainly a breed that's buzzing and the 89 bulls and 38 females provide a tempting selection for buyers on Tuesday's Perth Bull sales.

Yorkshire breeder Gerald Turton's Upsall bulls include the influence of his successful infusion of Australian genetics while Charles Lowther has some good sons of Blelack Minstrel including Lowther Dynamite who was junior bull champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. The Lowther entry includes an all-USA bred ET bull, LS Duke.

Top sires such as Tofts Romany and Chapelton Typhoon come through in entries from Donald Biggar's Chapelton herd while the Uppermill bulls by Uppermill Jinks will be worth a closer look.

Estonian Sumo wrestler snaps up Angus heifers

| 1 Comment | No TrackBacks

One of the world's leading professional sumo wrestlers is the latest recruit to the ranks of Aberdeen-Angus breeders.

Estonian, Kaido Hoovelson - who is currently the number two sumo wrestler in the world - has purchased 35 yearling heifers from Scotland as the foundation stock for an Aberdeen-Angus herd on his farm in Estonia.

The heifers have been purchased from the Rosemount herd of Alex and Wendy Sanger at Prettycur, Montrose, Angus, and are due to be shipped to Estonia later this month.

A group of 10 heifers and a bull are also going to Meelis and Piret Marmor of Aberdeen Top Genetics, whose 90-cow Marmorland herd, built up over the past six years on Scottish bloodlines, is now firmly established as the leading Aberdeen-Angus herd in Estonia.

Mr and Mrs Sanger's 200-cow Rosemount herd was last year named Bank of Scotland Aberdeen-Angus Suckler Herd of the Year. The herd has sold breeding stock to Estonia on three previous occasions and last year sold 37 heifers as part of a 120-strong consignment of heifers from three UK herds exported to Romania.

The Rosemount herd is run on strictly commercial lines selling finished cattle to Scotbeef and under the Glenbervie Aberdeen-Angus beef brand in conjunction with Glenbervie Home Farm, Drumlthie.

Mr and Mrs Marmor founded their Marmorland herd in 2006 with the purchase of 37 heifers and two bulls from Scotland followed by a further 35 heifers from the Rosemount herd in 2007.

The main stock bull, Tonley Black Dart E308, by Darlene Cruz 11F, bred by Neil Wattie, Mains of Tonley, Alford, Aberdeenshire, has recently been sold on at the age of six years, and has been followed by Wedderlie Elross F202, by Aynho Rossiter Eric D125, bred by John and Marion Tilson, Wedderlie, Gordon, Berwickshire, and purchased last year from Rosemount.
