Royal Welsh Show 2013: Dairy championship

Winning the interbreed championship under judge Colin Jones, of Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, was the Holstein Willsbro Goldwyn Kitty 5, exhibited by Hefyn Wilson of the Tregibby herd in Ceredigion.

This second calver, who is sired by Braedale Goldwyn, was purchased by the Wilson family as a maiden heifer from the Wills brothers for 2,500gns and is classified Ex90. She calved in October and is currently giving 45kg a day.

In reserve was Stuart Williams and Coryn’s Ayrshire Pam Ayrs Dream Hawaii, classified Ex95. Sired by Pam Ayrs Dream catcher she is out of Warmhill Ann.

The fifth calver is no stranger to the show ring, having won Champion Ayrshire at the Royal Cornwall for the last four years running and she’s fresh from picking up the reserve champion rosette at the Livestock Event just last month.

She last calved in February and is currently giving 34kg a day. She now heads home to the Camrose herd in Pembrokeshire to rest ahead of Pembrokeshire county show.

Judge Colin Jones, from Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire, said the Holstein was a “tremendous cow, with tremendous udder and veination.”

He said she was “probably one of the best cows in country” and would be a hard act to beat in the future
