Visitors to the Perth Bull sales not only witnessed a new individual Shorthorn breed record, but also a new breed average record..
In all, a total of 71 out of the 79 bulls put forward went under the hammer, with the breed average up £354 on the same time last year to £4,991.
And the Shorthorn Society's Frank Milnes puts much of the breed's renaissance and flying trade down to the Morrisons premium which has seen demand for the breed grow among commercial beef producers.
"This is the most bulls we've sold since the nineteen sixties. It's been a great sale with one or two breeders looking for new stock bulls, but also a lot of demand from commercial producers and new buyers," he said.
Falling not far behind this new breed record of 15,000gns, at 13,000gns, was Harry Horrell's Podehole Drummer (lot 412). A son of Trojan of Craigeassie and out of Podehole Madeline Tiffany, this one has a TSI of +17 and a SRI of +15. He was snapped up by M D McMillan, Moneydie Roger Farm, Perth.
There were also two bulls selling at 10,000gns. Up first was The Hon. G. Turton's Dakota of Upsall (lot 461 above); a son of Broughton Park Thunder and out of Upsall Jilt, this one has a TSI of +17 and a SRI of +21, and was bought by John Scott at Fearn Farm, Tain.
The second bull to hit 10,000gns was another Major J.P.O. Gibb's Glenisla Dam Buster (lot 465).
This one is by Glenilsa Badendum and out of Glenisla Eva Broadhooks. It boasts a TSI of +25 and a SRI of +22, and was bought by Dorset-based breeder A Cooper.
Meanwhile, the female champion Chapelton Duke (lot 404), another one from Donald Biggar, sold for 8,500gns to Alvie Estates, Kelso. This one is by Chapelton Typhoon and out of Chapelton Duchess, and has a TSI of +36 and a SRI of +28.
While the reserve, Blelack Major (lot 422) from Mr G Massie & Sons, sold for 7,000gns to Playfair Farms, Kelso. This one is by Blelack Secret Service and out of Blelack Mavis, and has a TSI of +13 and a SRI of +11.

In the Simmental calf championship, it was Storersmith Brave Heart 10 from Mr and Mrs Smith, Spath farm, Spath, Uttoxeter, that walked away with the top title. This September 2010 born bull calf is by Atlow Seamus and out of Barn Lodge Starburst.
In reserve was heifer Beabhill Beauty from R J and B E Kimber. Born in December 2010, she is by Omorga Volvo and out of Deerhurst Melisa. Judge Rob Heaps picked his champion for his power and correctness. "He is a well grown bull and would make a good stock bull for the pedigree man," he said.
The beef shorthorn championship was won by Aylward Gypsy Rose 5th from David Robert Rutherford, Bullocks Farm,
Shown in the ring by Simon Farmer, she cam off her dam, Aylward Gypsy Rose 2nd two weeks ago and is by Tarrant Waverley. Her cousin was champion heifer at the last Royal Welsh Show. Reserve was Podehole Endeavour by Trojan of Craigeassie and out of Podehole Gypsy Zza Zza. He was put forward by Harry Horrell, Pode Hall Farm, Thorney,
In the Red Poll calf championships, it was February 2011 born Nobodys Eclipse from Miss J Broughton, 33 Parkfield Farm, Long Buckby, Northants, in the top spot. This one is by Beasthorpe Samson and out of Nobodys Allspice.
In reserve was a heifer calf from the same exhibitor, this time Nobodys Ecstacy, a half sister to the champion, also by Beasthorpe Samson, but out of Coddenham Spicegirl.
On his champion, judge Richard Smith said: "The bull is well grown for his age, with good depth of body, width across the loin and exceptional shape over the rear end. I've chosen a dual purpose animal, at the beefier end of the scale, but to me he stood out."

Trade was for Beef Shorthorns was undoubtedly boosted by enhanced confidence in the breed, coupled with the current incentive offered by the Morrisons premium for Beef Shorthorn-sired steers at the second annual show and sale of pedigree beef breeding cattle on behalf of the North of England Beef Shorthorn Club at Skipton Auction Mart.
Leading trade was the second prize 21-month-old bull, Shawhill Donald, from Scottish breeders Thomson, Roddick and Laurie and represented at Skipton by father and son, John and Mathew Thomson. This one by Glenisla Zetor sold at 4,100gns (£4,305).
Next in the money was Mr Turton's Upsall herd, presenting the top-priced heifer and second top price in show at 4,000gns (£4,200) with the December, 2009-born Tessa X683 of Upsall, the first prize senior heifer and reserve female champion.
She is a daughter of Bilsdale Anson, bred near Stokesley by David Hollingworth and acquired by Mr Turton in 2008 when supreme champion at the northern society sale at Thirsk. The sire was also responsible for the top-priced 6,500gns bull at the breed society fixture at Kelso last month.
The first calf of the home-bred Tessa X505 of Upsall and herself scanned in calf to the Broughton Park Thunder son, Dingo of Upsall, was bought by North Craven beef and sheep farmers Stuart and Gail Currie, of Beautry Farm, Rathmell.
The Curries also purchased the top price female at Skipton's 2010 fixture, their first-ever Shorthorn acquistion for a new starter herd. Of their latest acquisition, Mr Currie said: "She has a lot of style. If she does as well as the one we bought here last year, we will be more than happy."
The Curries, who run the Northern Equine Therapy Centre at Rathmell, also paid 2,600gns (£2,730) for another Turton maiden heifer, the 15-month-old Broughton Park Thunder daughter Tessa X721 of Upsall. The quality duo supplement the Curries' current holding of four Shorthorn cows and calves.
There were other highlights on the day for the Upsall herd and stock manager Ian Park. Sapphire X706 of Upsall, the first Broughton Park Thunder heifer to be offered for sale, joined Ian Clough, of Stape, Pickering, for 3,000gns (£3,450).
Victoria X369 of Upsall, a 2005 daughter of Woden of Upsall, sold with heifer calf at foot by Atillar of Upsall and in calf to Dunsyre Boneparte, joined H & N Sloan, of Lauderdale in the Scottish Borders, for 3,000gns, top price in class.
Two others notable performers also made good prices. Westmoor Dahlia, who is in calf to Podehole Cracker, and Westmoor Lancaster Daisy consigned by the Paisley's, Dumfries and Galloway both found new homes in Lincolnshire when joining J and D Haigh, of Market Rasen, for 3,300gns (£3,465) and 3,100gns (£3,255) respectively.
Skipton show female averages were well up on last year, with cows and calves averaging £1,933 (£1,575 in 2010), in-calf cows £1,320 (£735), in-calf heifers £2,084 (£1,351.49) and maiden heifers £1,803 (£1,216). Bulls averaged £2,195.
