| No Comments | No TrackBacks

The pig ring was dominated by Andrew Davies of Andrew T Davies and Son, Trial Mawr, Llanon, Aberystwyth. He secured both the pairs and individual championship with his homebred gilts.

Taking the pairs title were two Welsh litter mates out of Milday Tessa and by Tralmawr Emperor. It was the first show outing for the pigs which weighed in at 91kg.

Judge Arwyn Morgans of Morgans Family Butchers Builth and Brecon said: "They are very smart, long, well shaped and ideal for the butcher. They're as matched as you can ever get."

In facts Mr Morgans likes what he saw so much that he purchased the pair after the show. One of the pair also walked away with the title of supreme individual pig.

2072011 RWS 3048 pig chmp web.JPGIt was a fitting win for Wales in the pig ring, with aWelsh gilt from Phil Fowlie, Braemor, Aberffraw, taking home the silverware.

The interbreed female champion, Braemor Daffodil 12th, is in pig to a boar from the Victor line and due to farrow for the fist time in August. She is one of eight, mainly Welsh breeding sows run by Mr Fowlie and is a Braemor Emperor 3rd daughter, out of Braemor Daffodil 5th.

It was a particularly sweet win for Mr Fowlie, who has been unable to show regularly this season due to heart surgery, but has worked hard to exhibit at the Royal Welsh.

Judge David Overton said: "It was a hard decision, but the gilt had it over the boar on the day. She's nicely in-pig, walks well and has a good underline."

In reserve was the interbreed male champion, a Large White October-2010 born boar from Bleddyn Beck, Panorama, Neath.

Panorama Prince 20 is by Portbredy Prince 2112 and out of Prestleigh Beryl 17. He comes from a run of successes having won interbreed champion at the Great Yorkshire Show. He now returns home where he may become the new stock boar or may be used as an AI boar in Belgium.

The reserve interbreed pig also received top honours in the interbreed pairs class with his litter mate, Panorama Beryl 25.

Both had already been crowned interbreed pair at the Great Yorkshire Show, with the gilt also winning supreme interbreed at the Three Counties Show.

Handled by Mr Beck and Lisa Kennedy in the ring, the pair received the Phil Fowlie award - donated by the breed championship winner and presented by chief veterinary officer, Christianne Glossop.

Although shown in the championship ring by Brooksby College lecturer, James Fryer and farm technician Joe Fytche, Earl had been prepared by Brooksby students Jane Riley, Alice Rossell, Rupert Caygill and Thomas Corbett.

Judge Mr N Overend said: "The boar is an excellent example of the breed; a good, tall pig that walks smoothly and would be a useful boar in any breeding herd."
