Welsh Blacks secure HCC funding for breed development

| No Comments | No TrackBacks
In a bid to help breeders identify the best performing cattle and help develop the breed for the future, the Welsh Black Cattle Society has secured HCC funding for a number of projects.

The grant funding will enable the Society to adopt the ABRI Breedplan Herd Performance Monitoring programme. Uniquely, however, the Society will also be incorporating Linear Assessments and Linear Measurements into the programme.

A field officer will score cows for feet, legs and udder and teats. An American concept of body measurements to identify balanced cows will contribute the remainder of the BodySUM index.

The Welsh black cattle society's Chairman, Mr Bob Williams said : "as a Suckler breed we must strive to take the middle road and retain the balance between the breeds milk producing attributes and beefing qualities. Future farmers will demand easily managed cows - easy calving with quick growing calves that require no supervision in terms of suckling supervision. By also focusing on mobility traits we can also enhance the breeds longevity and hence profitability

Coupling these linear assessments and performance recording will help us achieve a balanced approach to breeding, to produce honest and profitable cows."

A secondary project see's the establishment of a Bull Evaluation Centre in conjunction with IBERS at Gogerddan. Here a dozen bull calves from cows with superior BodySUM indexes will be Performance recorded for each of the next three years. Free semen will be distributed from one bull calf amongst participating herds to establish an across breed reference sire thus making future identification of superior genetics easier.

"We hope that this innovative approach to collaborative breed improvement will demonstrate our intent to remain commercially focused thus retaining our market leading position" said Mr Bob Williams.

The project has evolved from a breeders discussion group set up by Menter a Busnes  as part of the 'Cyswllt Amaeth' project in Ceredigion which has received funding through the Rural Development Plan for Wales 2007-2013 which is funded by the Welsh Assembly Government and the European Agriculture Fund for Rural Development. It will be featured at the Breeds First National Show being held in conjunction with Talybont Show on the 28th of August, 2010.

Welsh Black bulls to 16,600gns at Dolgellau

The New Year may only be a few weeks old, but it has started in style for the Welsh Black Cattle Society, with their first sale of the year achieving a top price of 16,600gns at Dolgellau on Tuesday. But despite this high price buyers were cautious in their spending and only the best cattle were in demand.

Leading the way was the much admired bull Caerynwch Banner 6 from local breeder T W Williams. Fully homebred, Banner 6 is by Caerynwch Ebrillwr 9 and out of Caerynwch Mai 59. Born in August 2007, Banner 6 sold to join pedigree breeder Alun Vaughan, Moel Irwch Uchaf, Llanrwst.

16600gns black.jpgNext best among the bulls was a 5400gns sale for Graig-Goch Gerwyn 29 from Emyr Jones, Nebo, Llanrwst. Gerwyn 29 is by Brysgaga Erddyn 42 and out of Graig Goch Cer 3. At 19 months old Gerwyn 29 joins alwyn Morris at Merrddyn, Llanrug, Caernarfon.

Welsh Blacks leave the green valleys

Sixteen pedigree Welsh Black Cattle have left the green green grass of home to join Denmark's first pedigree Welsh Black Cattle herd.

Last year 18 females and one bull were exported to the Bikubenfonden Foundation directed by Mr Henning Skovlund, forming the first pedigree herd of Welsh Black cattle in Denmark.  Mr Skovlund was so impressed with the cattle and their first crop of calves he returned in 2008 to purchase another 15 females and one bull.

Each year Denmark has chosen polled Welsh Black bulls from the Rhuddel Herd owned by Colin and Rhian Evans, Nant-y-Moch, Gwynfe, Llangadog, Carmarthenshire.  The females were purchased from the Castell Herd (10 heifers), the Graig-Goch Herd (four heifers) and the Rhuddel Herd (one heifer).

Four heifers are also set for new homes across the English channel. Three different farmers from Germany have bought three heifers from the Rhaeadr Herd and one heifer from the Rhuddel Herd.

Both countries are attracted to polled Welsh Black genetics and those cattle bred on organic holdings which have great emphasis on environmental grazing.

Charmian Middleton of the Rhaeadr herd said:

"Thirty four years on, three more descendants of our original major show-winning families have moved east to Germany. This includes the great, great, great, great granddaughter of Royal Welsh Show champion Welsh Queenie 6th SR, whose daughter Rhaeadr Queenie and her young daughter Rhaeadr Candida, were exported to Canada in 1974.  I wish their new owners every success with them as they are from very prolific long-lived ancestors."

Chief Executive, Andrew James, said:

'We're delighted to know that the cattle have served our European farmers well and they, in turn, have travelled to Wales to purchase more of our bloodlines'.

Among the in-calf entry the best price was a 3000gns call for another from the Jones family, Hafodescob Candy 13. This one was bought by Messrs B and L Pritchard, Marianglas, Anglesey.

Another from the Jones, Hafodescob Molly 97 was next top, making 2400gns to Lleyn Leisure and Rural Services, Pwllheli, Gwynedd.
