Large ewe and lamb entry secures brisk trade at Bentham

One of the largest entries was seen at Bentham market, with more than 2000 cast ewes forward. But with only 12 ringside buyers, trade was brisk for all classes of ewes, particularly the plainer sorts, with pens of recently weaned plain horned ewes trading at about ÂŁ30. Horned ewes topped at ÂŁ69, mule ewes ÂŁ85 for a pen of nine, Suffolk ewes to ÂŁ90, Blue-Faced Leicester’s ÂŁ93.50 and Continentals ÂŁ103.

 

An entry of 3214 spring lambs topped at 200p/kg for a pen of Texel cross lambs weighing 34kgs from M B Townley, Lancaster, closely followed by a pen forward by R A and C Benson’s Ulverston lambs weighing 40kgs and achieving ÂŁ78.50 (196p/kg). An overall average of 163p/kg was achieved for all classes of lambs.
